Chapter 10: The Twelfth Pair
Daniel took one step backward.
Marcus looked at him.
“You.””
Daniel's face had gone completely gray.
Vanessa stared at him through tears.
“No.””
Diane's voice broke.
“I thought he would protect her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn't take her.””
“You did,” Michael said.
“I never touched that child.””
Marcus stepped toward Daniel.
“Then tell me who did.””
Daniel looked at Diane.
She couldn't meet his eyes.
“Tell him,” Michael said.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“I was supposed to deliver the baby.””
Vanessa froze.
Marcus stared.
“Deliver her where?””
“To a safe family.””
“Whose family?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I don't know.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You knew.””
“I was told they would protect her.””
“Who told you?””
Daniel looked at Diane.
“She did.””
Marcus turned toward his mother.
“You gave my sister away.””
Diane began crying.
“I was terrified.””
“You gave away your own child.””
“I was trying to save both of you.””
“How?””
Diane's voice shook.
“Your grandmother discovered the people hunting the company had access to our hospital records. They knew about the twins. They believed one of you carried the genetic marker.””
Marcus stared at her.
“So you chose me?””
“No.””
She wiped her face.
“I separated you.””
“Why?””
“Because I couldn't hide two babies.””
Michael's eyes hardened.
“You should have told me.””
“I couldn't find you.””
“You could have tried.””
“I did!””
Her voice echoed across the patio.
“I spent years looking for you.””
Michael stared at her.
“And when you found me?””
“You were already presumed dead.””
Daniel looked away.
Marcus saw something in his expression.
Guilt.
Not surprise.
“You knew where Michael was.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“For part of the time.””
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Where?””
Daniel said nothing.
“Where was he?””
“In a private facility.””
Michael's expression became cold.
“They kept me there for six years.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus stared at Daniel.
“You knew?””
“I found out two years after the fire.””
“And you did nothing?””
“I couldn't get him out.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“You didn't even try.””
“I was being watched.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“I was protecting you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He pointed toward the mansion.
“You all used that word to justify lying to me.””
Diane stepped closer.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She was the child you gave away.””
Diane nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa's tears fell silently.
“Where did you send me?””
Diane stared at her.
“I don't know.””
Vanessa flinched.
“You don't know?””
“I was told you would be raised safely.””
“By strangers?””
“I was given a name.””
“What name?””
Diane reached into her purse with shaking hands.
She pulled out a tiny folded card.
“I kept this.””
Vanessa took it.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
A name was written inside.
*Evelyn Hart.*
Vanessa stared.
“My adoptive mother.””
Diane nodded.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“She died when I was sixteen.””
Diane's eyes filled.
“I didn't know where you were after that.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You could have looked.””
“I did.””
“No.””
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
“You looked for a child. You didn't look for me.””
Diane lowered her head.
Vanessa handed the card back.
“I spent my entire life wondering why nobody wanted me.””
Marcus looked at his sister.
“They did.””
Vanessa laughed through her tears.
“Then why did everyone leave?””
No one answered.
A breeze moved across the patio.
The wine stain on Vanessa's shoe had dried into a dark red crescent.
Marcus suddenly looked at it.
“The logo.””
Diane nodded.
“The shoes were made with the same biometric material used in the vault.””
Marcus picked up the twelfth shoe.
“Why would the shoe identify Vanessa?””
Michael answered.
“Because your grandmother designed the collection around the twins.””
Marcus looked at him.
“The shoes were a test.””
“Yes.””
“The twelfth pair recognized her?””
“Not exactly.””
Michael pointed toward the gold emblem.
“The emblem contains a microscopic genetic reader.””
Marcus stared.
“So when Mom saw it…”
“She recognized the prototype.””
“And knew Vanessa had it.””
Michael nodded.
“She realized the person wearing the shoe carried the same marker as the child she lost.””
Vanessa looked at Diane.
“That's why you recognized it.””
Diane nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked toward the house.
“And the vault?””
Michael reached into his coat.
He removed a small metal key.
“The shoe opens the first lock.””
Marcus held up the other key.
“Then this opens the second.””
Michael nodded.
“Together, they open the vault.””
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“You can't.””
Marcus turned.
“Why?””
“Because the records inside will destroy everyone.””
Michael shook his head.
“They'll expose everyone.””
Daniel's voice became desperate.
“You don't understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“If those names become public, people will come after you.””
Marcus stared.
“Let them.””
Diane stepped forward.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
She nodded slowly.
“No more.””
They drove to the company headquarters just before midnight.
The city was nearly empty.
Marcus, Michael, Diane, Vanessa, and Daniel entered through the private underground garage.
The elevator descended far below the main building.
Nobody spoke.
When the doors opened, they found a steel corridor.
At the end stood a vault door.
Michael inserted his key.
Marcus placed the second key beside it.
The lock clicked.
A scanner lit up.
*IDENTITY REQUIRED.*
Marcus looked at Michael.
“Which one of us?””
Michael shook his head.
“Both.””
Marcus placed his palm against the scanner.
Michael did the same.
The machine flashed green.
Then a third light appeared.
Vanessa stepped forward.
She placed her hand beside theirs.
The vault opened.
Inside were shelves of files, hard drives, photographs, ledgers, and sealed evidence boxes.
Marcus walked slowly inside.
At the center sat one small wooden box.
His name was written on it.
*MARCUS.*
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
His grandmother's handwriting.
He read it silently.
Then his eyes filled with tears.
Michael watched him.
“What does it say?””
Marcus handed him the letter.
Michael read.
His face broke.
Diane whispered, “What did she say?””
Marcus answered.
“She said the twelfth pair was never meant to expose Vanessa.””
Diane frowned.
“Then what?””
Marcus looked at her.
“She knew you would eventually find her.””
Vanessa stared.
“And?””
Marcus turned the final page.
There was one sentence beneath the signature.
*If Marcus and his sister ever stand together, the family can finally know the truth.*
Vanessa began crying.
Michael closed his eyes.
Daniel sat down heavily against the wall.
Marcus looked at the shelves.
“So this was the truth.””
Michael nodded.
“All of it.””
Marcus turned toward Daniel.
“And you?””
Daniel looked up.
“I'll testify.””
Marcus stared.
“Against everyone?””
“Yes.””
“Even yourself?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Especially myself.””
Diane stepped forward.
“I'll testify too.””
Vanessa looked at them.
“Why now?””
Diane answered softly.
“Because you finally found us.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Marcus.
“We found each other.””
Marcus smiled through his tears.
For thirty years, he'd believed his family had one mother, one father, one past.
Instead, he had inherited a maze of lies.
But standing beside his sister, with Michael finally alive and the truth spread across the vault shelves, he understood something his grandmother had known all along.
A family wasn't protected by hiding its wounds.
It was protected by finally letting them heal.
Marcus closed the wooden box.
Then he noticed one final envelope underneath it.
His name was written across the front.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
The same hospital room.
The same newborn twins.
But on the back, beneath his grandmother's handwriting, was one final sentence:
*There were never twelve children. There were only two.*
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
May you like
She smiled through her tears.
And for the first time in thirty years, neither twin had to wonder where they belonged.
