The Shoes Were Never Sold / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Glass

The man stepped through the glass doors as if he had every right to be there.

He was in his early sixties, tall and lean, with silver at his temples and a charcoal suit that looked absurdly formal beside the pool. His face had aged, but not enough.

Marcus knew him instantly.

His body reacted before his mind could.

His shoulders locked.

His hands curled into fists.

“Dad?””

Daniel stopped.

For one suspended second, nobody moved.

Then Daniel smiled.

It wasn't a warm smile.

It was the kind of smile a man wore when he had just confirmed something he already knew.

“Hello, son.””

Marcus took one step toward him.

Diane grabbed his arm.

“Don't.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew.””

Diane shook her head rapidly.

“I knew he was alive. I didn't know he was here.””

Daniel gave a quiet laugh.

“You always did underestimate how easy you were to find.””

Marcus turned back.

“You've been watching her?””

Daniel looked at Diane.

“For eight years.””

Vanessa began crying.

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Why?””

Daniel walked farther onto the patio.

Guests moved away from him instinctively.

He looked around the mansion, taking in the pool, the tables, the flowers, the wine glasses.

“Beautiful place.””

Marcus didn't move.

“You don't get to walk into my mother's house.””

Daniel's eyes settled on him.

“Your mother's house?””

He smiled.

“You still don't know.””

Diane stepped between them.

“Daniel, leave.””

He looked at her.

“You haven't changed.””

“And you have.””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“Not enough.””

Diane's hand trembled.

“Why are you doing this?””

“Because you lied.””

“I protected my son.””

“You protected yourself.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel ignored him.

“You told him I abandoned the family.””

Diane's eyes flashed.

“You did.””

“No.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was forced out.””

“You stole from me.””

“I took what was mine.””

“You sold my designs.””

“I sold what you refused to share.””

Marcus raised his voice.

“Enough!””

Both parents turned toward him.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Tell me the truth.””

Daniel studied him.

“Your mother wants you to believe I'm a thief.””

“She said you stole company information.””

“I did.””

Marcus blinked.

Daniel continued.

“But not for money.””

Diane's face hardened.

“Don't.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Tell him.””

“Tell me what?””

Daniel pointed toward the photograph still clutched in Diane's hand.

“The shoes.””

Diane's fingers tightened.

Marcus looked at the picture.

“What do the shoes have to do with you?””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Everything.””

He walked toward the patio table and picked up an untouched glass of champagne.

“I designed the original production system.””

Diane scoffed.

“You copied my work.””

“I helped build it.””

“You sabotaged it.””

Daniel took a sip.

“And you destroyed the evidence.””

Marcus frowned.

“What evidence?””

Daniel placed the glass down.

“The twelfth pair wasn't stolen.””

Diane went still.

“It was never supposed to be sold.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“Then why did it disappear?””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Because your mother hid something inside it.””

Diane's face changed.

Marcus saw it.

“What?””

Daniel's gaze shifted to Vanessa.

“She doesn't know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You said you knew everything.””

“I knew enough to make you useful.””

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“You worked with him?””

Vanessa sobbed.

“I didn't know who he was.””

Daniel looked amused.

“She knew exactly what she needed to know.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“You used her.””

“I gave her a choice.””

“What choice?””

Daniel looked at Diane.

“Wear the shoes to the party.””

Diane whispered, “Why?””

“To make you reveal where you hid the original.””

Marcus stared.

“The original what?””

Daniel smiled.

“Now we're getting somewhere.””

Diane suddenly grabbed Marcus's hand.

“We're leaving.””

Daniel laughed.

“You can't leave.””

Marcus turned.

“Why not?””

Daniel nodded toward the driveway.

Marcus looked.

The mansion gates were closed.

Two black SUVs blocked the entrance.

His phone buzzed.

Security alert.

*Front gate disabled.*

Marcus looked back at Daniel.

“You planned this.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel's expression became cold.

“Because for eight years, I asked your mother for the truth.””

Diane shook her head.

“You threatened me.””

“I warned you.””

“You threatened my life.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“And you still didn't tell him.””

Marcus stared at his mother.

“Tell me what?””

Diane looked like she had suddenly become much older.

“Marcus…”

Daniel interrupted.

“Ask her where the necklace is.””

Marcus frowned.

“What necklace?””

Diane closed her eyes.

Daniel smiled.

“The one your grandmother left her.””

Marcus looked at his mother.

“Mom?””

Diane didn't answer.

Daniel walked toward her.

“Tell him.””

She stepped backward.

“Stay away from me.””

“You've spent eight years hiding it.””

“I didn't hide it from you.””

“You hid it from everyone.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What does Grandma's necklace have to do with a pair of shoes?””

Daniel's face became serious.

“Nothing.””

He paused.

“Except what's hidden inside the necklace is the reason I disappeared.””

Marcus stared.

Diane whispered, “Daniel, stop.””

Daniel looked at his son.

“Your mother didn't build this company alone.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?””

“I'm saying the company was never legally hers.””

Diane suddenly shouted, “That's enough!””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Then show him the documents.””

Diane's face went blank.

Marcus noticed something on the table.

The soaked envelope.

The photograph.

And beneath them, a folded piece of paper Daniel had somehow placed there.

Marcus picked it up.

The top line read:

*TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP — DIANE HARTWELL / DANIEL HARTWELL*

Marcus looked up.

“Mom?””

She couldn't speak.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Read the second page.””

Marcus unfolded it.

His eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

There was one name listed under *Beneficiary*.

His own.

Marcus's face drained.

“Why is my name here?””

Diane whispered, “Because you were never supposed to see this.””

Before Marcus could respond, every light around the pool suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

And somewhere inside the house, a woman screamed.
