Chapter 11: The Person Who Knew Too Much

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The accusation hung in the air.

Heavy.

Impossible.

I looked at Ava.

She looked back at me.

And the pain on her face was immediate.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Pain.

“Bear.””

Her voice broke.

“No.””

I wanted to believe her.

I did.

But after everything I had learned tonight, trust felt like something fragile.

Something that could disappear with one sentence.

Elijah stood near the table.

“I didn’t say she betrayed you.””

“But you implied it.””

“I said someone you trusted brought them here.””

His eyes moved to the contract.

“The question is whether they did it willingly.””

Ava stepped forward.

“You think I called them?””

“No.””

“Then why are you looking at me like that?””

Because nobody had an answer.

That was the worst part.

Everyone was trapped between suspicion and loyalty.

I looked outside.

Through the dusty window.

Black vehicles surrounded the shop.

The same people from the church.

The same people who chased Ava.

They weren’t hiding anymore.

They knew exactly where we were.

Daniel locked the door.

“It’s over.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He looked surprised.

“What?””

I picked up the contract.

“My whole life, everyone decided what I could handle.””

I looked around the shop.

“My father.””

“Evelyn.””

“Marcus.””

“Everyone.””

My voice hardened.

“That ends now.””

Elijah watched me.

For the first time, he looked impressed.

“Raymond would have liked hearing that.””

I ignored him.

“How do we get out?””

Daniel walked toward the back wall.

“There’s a service exit.””

Marcus followed.

“Then we leave.””

But Ava didn’t move.

I noticed.

“Ava?””

She looked at the floor.

“I need to tell you something.””

The room went quiet.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

She took a breath.

“The wedding wasn’t the first time I saw that contract.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Ava looked at me.

“I saw it three months ago.””

The words hit.

“Where?””

She swallowed.

“Your father’s old office.””

I stared.

“My father’s office?””

“Yes.””

“Why were you there?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt.

“My father sent me.””

I stepped back.

“Your father.””

She nodded.

“He told me to find Raymond’s documents if anything happened to him.””

Daniel whispered:

“Thomas.””

Ava looked at him.

“You knew my father?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Everyone knew Thomas.””

I looked between them.

“How many people were involved in this?””

Nobody answered.

Ava continued.

“I found the contract. But I didn’t understand what it meant.””

“Then why hide it from me?””

“Because when I saw your father’s name…”

She stopped.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I realized Raymond wasn’t just someone from my father’s research.””

She looked at me.

“He was your father.””

I didn’t speak.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked toward the vehicles outside.

“Of what happened to your father happening to you.””

The answer should have made me feel better.

Instead, it made me angry.

Because fear had controlled everyone.

Fear had stolen years.

Before I could respond, the front door shook.

Someone hit it from outside.

A voice called:

“Bear Cole!””

Everyone froze.

I recognized the voice.

Victor.

“Open the door.””

Daniel whispered:

“He came himself.””

Marcus looked terrified.

“Why?””

Elijah answered.

“Because he knows the contract is here.””

The door shook again.

Victor’s voice came through.

“Bear.””

A pause.

“You deserve the truth.””

I walked toward the door.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I’m tired of running.””

I opened the door.

Victor stood outside.

No guards.

No weapon.

Just him.

The rain poured behind him.

He looked older than before.

Tired.

Almost defeated.

“I knew you’d open it.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Victor looked past me.

At the contract.

Then at the photograph.

“Because you’re Raymond’s son.””

I stepped outside.

“Tell me.””

Victor looked at me.

“I can.””

“Then start with my father.””

His expression changed.

And the answer came quietly.

“Your father is alive.””

My breath caught.

“But he doesn’t know you’re looking for him.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Victor looked away.

“Because the last time Raymond saw you…”

He stopped.

My heart pounded.

“What?””

May you like

Victor swallowed.

“He believed you betrayed him.””
