Chapter 5: The Brother I Never Knew
For a moment, I thought the rain had stopped.
It hadn’t.
I just couldn’t hear it anymore.
My entire life had been built around one simple truth.
I was Raymond Cole’s only son.
One father.
One childhood.
One empty space where answers should have been.
Now an old woman was standing in front of me telling me there was another piece of my family I never knew existed.
A brother.
I looked at the photograph again.
The man beside my father looked younger.
Maybe twenty years old.
But the resemblance was impossible to ignore.
The eyes.
The expression.
The way he stood.
Like he was carrying the same weight I carried.
“No,” I whispered.
Evelyn didn’t look away.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“You don’t.””
“I do.””
She stepped closer.
“You’re thinking Raymond would never hide something like this from you.””
I looked at her.
“He wouldn’t.””
My voice came out sharper than I expected.
“He wouldn’t.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
Not anger.
Sadness.
“Bear…”
“Don’t.””
I looked away.
Because admitting she might be right felt worse than anything else.
My father was gone.
I couldn’t ask him why.
I couldn’t demand answers.
I could only stand there with strangers telling me who he was.
The groom interrupted.
“This is exactly why Raymond wanted the truth buried.””
I turned toward him.
“You keep saying my father’s name like you knew him.””
The groom looked at me.
“I did.””
“Who are you?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was becoming familiar.
Everyone around me had answers.
Nobody wanted to give them.
Finally, he said:
“Marcus.””
Ava closed her eyes.
I noticed.
“You know him.””
She nodded slowly.
“I thought I did.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You never understood what this was.””
Ava laughed bitterly.
“I understood enough to know I almost married someone who was lying to me.””
Marcus looked hurt.
Only briefly.
Then his expression hardened again.
“This isn’t about us.””
“No,” I said.
“It’s about my father.””
Marcus looked at the contract.
“And what he left behind.””
I stepped closer.
“You knew him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Marcus looked at the church.
“My family worked with yours.””
“Worked how?””
Silence.
Then Evelyn answered.
“They protected each other.””
The words confused me.
“Protected what?””
Evelyn looked at the contract.
“The truth.””
I looked down at the papers.
The same answer again.
Always the same.
Truth.
Secrets.
Protection.
I was tired of hearing words that explained nothing.
I grabbed the contract.
“What exactly is everyone afraid I’ll find?””
Nobody answered.
That was when I heard it.
A motorcycle engine.
Not outside the alley.
Inside my memory.
My father’s old bike.
The sound he used to make when he came home late.
The sound that disappeared the night he vanished.
I looked at Evelyn.
“What happened to him?””
Her face changed.
Like she had been waiting years for someone to ask.
“Raymond didn’t leave you.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
She looked down.
“He was taken away from the life he built.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Evelyn.””
She ignored him.
“He spent years trying to protect you.””
“From who?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then at the men near the church.
Then back at me.
“From people who believed the contract was worth killing for.””
Ava moved closer.
“Bear…”
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“Not everything.””
“But something.””
Her silence answered.
I stepped back.
The betrayal wasn’t loud.
It didn’t come with shouting.
It came quietly.
Like rain soaking through a jacket.
“You all knew my father was connected to this.””
Ava’s eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By hiding it?””
“I didn’t know how to tell you.””
I looked at the contract.
Then at the photograph.
Then at Evelyn.
My whole life felt like a room where someone had been slowly removing the walls without telling me.
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t Marcus’s.
It wasn’t the suited men’s.
It was mine.
I pulled it from my pocket.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a voice.
An old recording.
A voice I hadn’t heard in decades.
My father.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Bear…”
I couldn’t breathe.
The recording continued.
“If you’re hearing this, it means they found the contract.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked terrified.
My father’s voice continued.
“And it means I failed to keep you away from the truth.””
The alley became completely silent.
Then came the final words.
The words that made everyone’s faces change.
“Your brother is not the person they’re looking for.””
A pause.
A crackle of static.
May you like
Then:
“Because your brother is the one who betrayed me.””
