The Signature He Never Gave / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7: The Name My Father Wrote

The room disappeared.

Not literally.

But everything around me became distant.

The voices.

The lights.

The people standing in front of me.

All I could see was one name written in my father’s handwriting.

Vanessa.

I stared at the paper.

Then at her.

Then back at the paper.

My mind kept trying to reject it.

Because some truths are too painful to accept immediately.

My father had spent his final moments leaving me a warning.

And the warning was about the woman I had built my entire adult life around.

Vanessa took a step toward me.

“Marcus…”

I lifted the letter.

“Don’t.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone stopped.

Her face changed.

“I can explain.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence again.

The same sentence I had heard all day.

The sentence that had become a shield for every secret.

“You always say that.””

Her eyes filled with emotion.

“Because there is an explanation.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“There’s a difference between an explanation and an excuse.””

Vanessa looked down.

Thomas watched her carefully.

Evelyn crossed her arms.

Even Julian looked uncomfortable.

The person who had spent weeks trying to take my company now looked like someone who had realized the game was bigger than he thought.

I looked at Vanessa.

“My father wrote your name.””

She said nothing.

“Why?””

Her lips parted.

No words came out.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

I turned toward Robert.

“You knew this?””

Robert looked devastated.

“No.””

“You had the letter.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew what was inside?””

“No.””

I studied his face.

For the first time, I believed him.

Robert had been hiding things.

But this reaction was different.

He was shocked.

“Then who else knew?””

Nobody answered.

Thomas spoke.

“Your father didn’t trust many people.””

I looked at him.

“But he trusted Vanessa?””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“That’s the complicated part.””

I looked back at her.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa wiped beneath her eyes.

“I didn’t know your father would die that night.””

The words immediately caught my attention.

That night.

Not the accident.

Not the tragedy.

The night.

“You were there.””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at the floor.

“Because your father asked me to meet him.””

The room became silent.

“Why would my father ask my girlfriend’s future self to meet him?””

Vanessa looked at me.

The pain in her face seemed real.

“Because he knew I had the original documents.””

My jaw tightened.

“You had them.””

“Yes.””

“The documents proving my mother owned the company.””

“Yes.””

“And my father knew?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

The betrayal felt physical.

“You were carrying the truth around for twelve years.””

“I was trying to protect it.””

“By marrying me?””

She flinched.

That reaction told me I had hit the right question.

“Was that part of the plan?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

I stared at her.

“Then why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time that night, she looked completely broken.

“Because after your father died, I thought I had lost the only person who knew the truth.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Your father didn’t ask me to protect the company.””

A pause.

“He asked me to protect you.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the letter.

My father’s warning.

Vanessa’s name.

None of it made sense.

“My father believed you were dangerous.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“Then why would he trust you?””

“Because he changed his mind.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

“The night he died.””

The words settled over the room.

I walked closer.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked at the others.

Then at me.

“I met your father at the old Reed Industries building.””

Thomas immediately reacted.

“The night of the fire.””

I turned toward him.

“What fire?””

He looked at me.

“The fire everyone said destroyed the evidence.””

My stomach tightened.

“There was a fire?””

Robert nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why don’t I know about this?””

“Because it was covered up.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What happened?””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father was angry.””

“At me?””

“At everyone.””

She looked away.

“He knew the company records had been altered. He knew someone had been moving money. He knew someone inside his circle was betraying him.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Julian.

Then at Evelyn.

Then finally at me.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed her.

Including me.

She noticed.

“I really don’t.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You knew more than you told him.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“And you knew more than anyone.””

The tension between them was immediate.

I looked between them.

“You two know each other.””

Neither answered.

That was enough.

I turned to Vanessa.

“How?””

She whispered:

“Thomas was the person who introduced me to your father.””

I felt another piece of my life collapse.

“You knew Thomas before all this?””

“Yes.””

“And Evelyn?””

“Yes.””

“And my mother?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“How many people from my family’s past have been hiding in my life?””

No one answered.

Then Julian spoke.

“Marcus.””

I looked at him.

He looked different.

Less like an enemy.

More like someone terrified of what was coming next.

“There’s something you need to know.””

I almost ignored him.

But something in his voice stopped me.

“What?””

He looked at his mother.

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

“Don’t.””

Julian ignored her.

“The documents we created…”

He paused.

“They weren’t just about transferring your company.””

I waited.

“They were insurance.””

“Insurance against what?””

His eyes moved to Vanessa.

“Against her finding the original records.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Julian continued.

“Your wife has been searching for the original ownership documents for years.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

Julian laughed quietly.

“You told me yourself.””

“When?””

“The night you hired me.””

I looked at her.

“You hired him?””

She looked away.

That was another answer.

Julian continued.

“She didn’t want the company at first.””

I frowned.

“What did she want?””

He looked at me.

“The truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“She wanted to know if your father was the reason her own father died.””

My mind froze.

“Her father?””

Julian nodded.

“Your father wasn’t just connected to my family.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“He was connected to hers.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What happened to your father?””

Her face became pale.

“My father worked for Reed Industries.””

The room went silent.

“He discovered something.””

“What?””

She looked at the letter in my hand.

“Something about your father.””

My heartbeat increased.

“And?””

She whispered:

“He tried to expose him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Did my father kill your father?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“Then what?””

She looked toward the window.

Her voice became barely audible.

“Your father tried to save him.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

She looked back at me.

“Because the night your father died…”

A pause.

“He wasn’t running away from the truth.””

She swallowed.

“He was trying to reveal it.””

I stared at her.

Then the front door shook.

Everyone turned.

A loud knock echoed through the house.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nobody moved.

Robert whispered:

“Who did you tell?””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

His eyes were fixed on the door.

“Who knows we have the letter?””

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A single message appeared.

*Marcus, open the door if you want to know who killed your father.*

I looked toward the entrance.

My hand tightened around the letter.

Then another message appeared.

*But before you open it, ask Vanessa one question.*

My heart pounded.

The next line appeared.

*Ask her who she was with when your father took his last breath.*

Slowly…

I turned toward my wife.

Vanessa’s face had gone completely white.

Because she knew the answer.

May you like

And for the first time all night…

She looked afraid of me finding out.
