Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Betrayal
The video ended.
But nobody moved.
The final frame remained frozen in my mind.
My father’s face.
The pain in his eyes.
The person standing across from him.
Robert.
For twelve years, I had trusted the wrong person.
Or at least that was what my heart wanted to believe.
Because accepting that Robert betrayed me was almost as painful as accepting what Vanessa had done.
The people closest to me.
The people who stood beside me after my father died.
The people who told me they were protecting me.
One by one, they were becoming strangers.
I slowly picked up my phone.
The screen was black.
But my hands were shaking.
“Robert.””
He didn’t answer.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, he did.
His face wasn’t the face of a guilty man caught in a lie.
It was the face of someone who had been waiting twelve years for this moment.
“I can explain.””
I closed my eyes.
Those words again.
But this time, something was different.
Because I didn’t hear an excuse.
I heard exhaustion.
“Then explain.””
Robert looked around the room.
At Vanessa.
At Thomas.
At Evelyn.
Then finally at me.
“I didn’t kill your father.””
The sentence came first.
Not because I asked.
Because he knew that was the question in my mind.
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“I expect you to hear everything before you decide.””
I looked at the video again.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You argued with him.””
“Yes.””
“You were the last person recorded with him.””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why should I believe anything you say?””
He looked down.
“Because your father believed me.””
That made my anger explode.
“My father believed a lot of people.””
My voice hardened.
“And look where that got him.””
Robert accepted the words.
He didn’t defend himself.
That bothered me more than an argument would have.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked at Robert.
Then back at me.
“He’s telling the truth about one thing.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He didn’t kill your father.””
I stared at her.
“You’re defending him?””
“No.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I’m telling you what I saw.””
I looked between them.
“Then what happened that night?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“The video doesn’t show what happened after.””
Robert nodded.
“Because someone deleted the rest.””
Thomas immediately reacted.
“Who?””
Robert looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
A cold sound.
“Of course you don’t.””
Robert looked at her.
“You think I wanted any of this?””
“I think you protected yourself.””
“No.””
His voice became stronger.
“I protected Marcus.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Robert looked at me.
And finally…
He did.
“Your father discovered the person stealing from the company.””
I waited.
“It wasn’t Julian.””
Julian looked up.
“Then who?””
Robert’s eyes moved around the room.
“The person who had the most access.””
Silence.
“The person who could move money without raising suspicion.””
My heart started pounding.
“Who?””
Robert looked at me.
“Your mother’s attorney.””
I froze.
“My mother’s attorney?””
“Yes.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It does when you know the entire story.””
Robert walked toward the desk.
He picked up the ownership documents.
“Your mother didn’t just create Reed Industries.””
He tapped the papers.
“She created a legal protection system.””
“What kind?””
“She knew people would try to take control after her death.””
I listened carefully.
“She placed ownership into a trust.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
“And who controlled it?””
Robert looked at me.
“Her attorney.””
The room went quiet.
“Who was that?””
Robert didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation scared me.
“Robert.””
He sighed.
“Daniel Reed.””
My uncle.
The man who was supposedly dead.
I looked at Thomas.
Then at Evelyn.
Everyone had another connection.
Another secret.
“Wait.””
I shook my head.
“My uncle was my mother’s attorney?””
“Yes.””
“And my father’s brother?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone say he disappeared?””
Robert looked away.
“Because disappearing was easier than being found.””
The answer didn’t satisfy me.
Nothing did anymore.
I looked at Thomas.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe my uncle was dead.””
“I thought he was.””
“Thought?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“I saw what happened after your father died.””
“What happened?””
He looked at Robert.
Robert nodded.
“Tell him.””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Your father had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Daniel had been manipulating company records for years.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Then why blame Vanessa?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because Daniel needed someone else to take the fall.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
She understood immediately.
“He used me.””
Thomas nodded.
“He knew you were close to Marcus.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Were you?””
She looked hurt.
“Yes.””
“Before all this?””
“Yes.””
I remembered the beginning.
The first time we met.
The way she seemed to understand me.
The way she supported me after my father’s death.
Was any of it real?
“I need to know something.””
She looked at me.
“Did you love me?””
The question surprised everyone.
Even me.
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
“I loved you.””
“Then why did you hide everything?””
She looked broken.
“Because your father made me promise.””
“My father?””
“He told me if Daniel ever came after you, I had to stay close.””
I stared.
“Stay close?””
“To protect you.””
A painful silence followed.
“You’re telling me you married me to protect me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why the documents?””
Her face fell.
“Because I failed.””
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought Daniel was gone.””
“But he wasn’t.””
“No.””
She looked at the floor.
“He came back.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
The room froze.
Six months.
The exact time Julian entered my company.
The exact time Vanessa started acting differently.
The exact time everything changed.
I looked at Julian.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“Not everything.””
“But you knew something.””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“What did you know?””
Julian swallowed.
“My mother wasn’t trying to take your company.””
I waited.
“She was trying to stop Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Evelyn looked furious.
“Enough.””
Julian ignored her.
“You think this was about revenge?””
He pointed at the documents.
“Those papers weren’t created to steal Reed Industries.””
He looked at me.
“They were created to trap Daniel.””
I stared.
“What?””
Julian continued.
“Daniel needed Marcus to sign something.””
“What?””
“The transfer documents.””
“Why?””
“Because once Marcus signed them, Daniel could legally access the trust.””
My blood went cold.
“So the entire plan…”
Julian nodded.
“Was never about taking your company.””
A pause.
“It was about forcing Daniel to reveal himself.””
I looked around the room.
Everything changed.
The betrayal.
The lies.
The documents.
The manipulation.
Everyone had been playing a dangerous game.
But someone was still missing.
My uncle.
The person behind everything.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
“Marcus.””
My blood ran cold.
“Uncle Daniel.””
A quiet laugh.
“So you finally know.””
I gripped the phone.
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“You’ve been behind all of this.””
A pause.
Then:
“Not all of it.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“You still don’t understand.””
His voice became colder.
“Your father wasn’t the victim.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone was listening.
“Then who was?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered:
“You.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“Marcus, your father spent years hiding the truth from you.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“No.””
His voice lowered.
“But this will.””
A sound came through the phone.
A file transfer notification.
Another document appeared on my screen.
I opened it.
The title was simple.
*PATERNITY RECORDS.*
My hands froze.
Daniel spoke.
“Your father wasn’t your biological father.””
The room disappeared.
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
“Yes.””
His voice was calm.
“Your mother had a secret before she died.””
I stared at the document.
At the name listed under biological father.
A name I had never seen before.
Daniel continued:
“And that is why everyone has been lying to you.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who am I?””
The line went silent.
Then Daniel whispered:
“The only person who can destroy everything they built.””
The call ended.
I looked at the document.
At the name.
And for the first time in my life…
May you like
I questioned not just my family.
But my own identity.
