Chapter 1: The Slap

The sound of Ethan’s hand striking his mother echoed through the elegant living room.

“Why did you hurt my wife?”” Ethan shouted.

Gloria stumbled sideways, one trembling hand catching the edge of the sofa. At seventy-five, she had survived grief, illness, and the quiet cruelty of family disagreements. But nothing had prepared her for seeing her own son standing over her with fury in his eyes.

Across the room, Sophia clutched her arm.

“Oh, Ethan…” Sophia whispered, tears rolling perfectly down her cheeks.

“I tried to stop her.””

Gloria looked at her daughter-in-law.

For one second, their eyes met.

Sophia lowered her head.

But Gloria saw it.

That tiny smile.

Barely there.

A flash at the corner of Sophia’s mouth before she covered it with her hand.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Mom, I asked you a question.””

Gloria slowly straightened her dress.

She didn't answer.

Instead, she walked toward the wall-mounted security monitor.

“Gloria,” Ethan snapped, “where are you going?””

“Watch this.””

She pressed a button.

Sophia stopped crying.

The room became completely silent.

The security footage appeared.

It showed the same living room.

The same coffee table.

The same sofa.

And Sophia.

On the recording, Sophia sat alone, staring toward the hallway.

She glanced around.

Then she deliberately tipped her glass.

The drink spilled across the table.

Sophia immediately grabbed her own arm and dragged her fingernails across the skin.

She winced.

Then she started crying.

Only after that did she reach for her phone.

The recording showed her making the call.

“Ethan?”” her recorded voice trembled.

“Your mother just attacked me.””

Ethan's face changed.

He looked at the monitor.

Then at Sophia.

Then back at the monitor.

“You lied to me?””

Sophia's mouth fell open.

“Ethan, I—”

“You lied to me?”” he repeated.

Sophia wiped her cheeks.

“I was scared.””

Gloria remained beside the monitor.

“You weren't scared.””

Sophia turned toward her.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

Gloria pressed another button.

The footage changed.

This time, Sophia was sitting at the coffee table late at night.

The room was dim, but the camera captured everything.

Sophia held a phone against her ear.

She whispered.

“Ethan still doesn't know who signed it.””

Ethan froze.

Sophia continued.

“No. He hasn't seen anything.””

Gloria watched her son’s face tighten.

Then the recording caught something beside Sophia.

A document.

Partially covered by her purse.

Ethan stepped closer to the monitor.

“What is that?””

Gloria zoomed in.

The image sharpened.

At the bottom of the document was a signature.

Ethan’s signature.

His breathing changed.

“I never signed that.””

Sophia slowly backed toward the doorway.

Gloria turned away from the monitor.

“Then someone forged it.””

Ethan turned sharply toward Sophia.

“Sophia…”

Sophia said nothing.

Her fingers tightened around the door handle.

And then the security monitor suddenly went black.
