Chapter 7: The Second Signature
Gloria stared at the paper in Ethan’s hand.
For several seconds, she didn't blink.
Then she whispered, “I didn't sign that.””
Ethan looked at the signature again.
“It looks exactly like yours.””
“I know.””
“Mom, what is going on?””
Gloria reached for the paper.
Ethan pulled it away.
“No.””
“Ethan, please.””
“You've been telling me you're protecting me.””
“I was.””
“Then why is your signature on Dad's note?””
Gloria's eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father asked me to sign it.””
Ethan went still.
“What?””
Sophia stood near the coffee table, watching them.
Gloria slowly sat down.
“Your father knew he was in danger.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You said he was sick.””
“He was.””
“You said he died peacefully.””
“He didn't.””
The words seemed to drain the warmth from the room.
Ethan stared at his mother.
“What happened?””
Gloria pressed both hands against her knees.
“Your father came home that night with a cut above his eye. His shirt was torn. He locked every door in this house.””
Ethan swallowed.
“Why didn't you call the police?””
“He wouldn't let me.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed the police had already been compromised.””
Sophia quietly stepped forward.
“He was right.””
Ethan turned toward her.
“How would you know?””
Sophia looked down.
“Because my father was one of the men he was afraid of.””
Gloria closed her eyes.
Ethan stared at Sophia.
“You knew all of this before you married me.””
“I knew some of it.””
“How much?””
“Enough to know your father was trying to expose someone.””
“Who?””
Sophia didn't answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Who?””
She looked at the black folder.
“I never saw the final list.””
“Then what did you see?””
“Payments.””
“To whom?””
“Executives. Lawyers. People who were supposed to be untouchable.””
Ethan opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of contracts, bank records, handwritten notes, and photographs.
Then he found another page.
At the top was a name.
*SOPHIA CARTER.*
His breath stopped.
Sophia saw it.
“Ethan—”
“You're in here.””
“I can explain.””
He turned the page.
Beside her name was a payment record.
A large amount.
Then another.
And another.
Ethan's voice became almost inaudible.
“You were paid.””
Sophia shook her head.
“That wasn't for me.””
“Your name is on the records.””
“My father used my name.””
“Why?””
“Because the money couldn't go directly to him.””
Ethan looked at Gloria.
“You knew?””
Gloria shook her head.
“I didn't know Sophia was involved.””
Sophia stepped closer.
“I wasn't involved the way you think.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You married me after my father died.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about the records.””
“Yes.””
“You knew someone wanted access to them.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me.””
Sophia's eyes filled.
“I loved you.””
Ethan slammed the folder shut.
“Don't use that word.””
Sophia flinched.
Gloria reached for the folder.
“There's something else.””
Ethan looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed to the final page.
A handwritten sentence appeared beneath the documents.
*If they come for the records, do not trust blood or marriage. Trust the person who can prove what they did.*
Ethan stared at it.
Then he looked at his mother.
“Dad wrote this.””
“Yes.””
“Why did he make you sign?””
Gloria hesitated.
“He wanted proof that I had received the warning.””
“Proof for whom?””
She didn't answer.
Ethan turned toward the security monitor.
The screen suddenly lit up.
A live camera feed appeared.
The room was empty on the screen.
But the timestamp was current.
Someone was watching them.
Sophia whispered, “Turn it off.””
Ethan walked toward the monitor.
“No.””
“Ethan!””
He stopped.
A red indicator blinked.
Then a message appeared.
*ONE FILE REMAINS.*
Ethan stared at the screen.
Another line appeared beneath it.
*ASK GLORIA ABOUT THE NIGHT SHE CHANGED THE WILL.*
Gloria's face went white.
Ethan slowly turned around.
“You changed Dad's will?””
May you like
Gloria said nothing.
And this time, Sophia looked just as shocked as he was.
