Chapter 2: The Paper

“Why is my signature on that paper?””

Ethan’s voice was quieter now.

That frightened Sophia more than shouting would have.

She stood beside the doorway, her hand hovering inches from the brass handle.

“I can explain.””

Gloria remained beside the security monitor.

“No,” she said.

“You can answer.””

Sophia looked at her.

“You planned this.””

Gloria gave a small, humorless laugh.

“I didn't plan your lie.””

“You knew I was going to be exposed.””

“I knew you were careless.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Stop.””

Both women went silent.

Ethan walked toward the coffee table.

His footsteps sounded strangely heavy against the polished floor.

He looked at the document on the monitor again.

“My signature.””

“Yes,” Gloria said.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn't you tell me before today?””

Gloria turned toward him.

“Because until tonight, I didn't know how far she had gone.””

Sophia shook her head.

“That's ridiculous.””

Gloria pointed at the screen.

“Then tell me why you were talking about my son’s signature.””

Sophia’s eyes darted toward the monitor.

“I wasn't talking about his signature.””

Ethan stared at her.

“You literally said, ‘Ethan still doesn't know who signed it.’”

“I was talking about something else.””

“What?””

Sophia hesitated.

“Something private.””

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

“Private?””

He pointed toward his mother.

“You accused her of attacking you.””

“I was protecting myself.””

“You staged an attack.””

“I panicked!””

“You smiled at the camera.””

Sophia’s face tightened.

“That video doesn't show everything.””

Gloria stepped closer.

“What else should it show?””

Sophia looked at her.

“The part where you threatened me.””

“I never threatened you.””

“You did.””

“When?””

Sophia opened her mouth.

Again, nothing.

Ethan noticed.

His shoulders dropped.

For the first time that night, he looked less like an angry husband and more like a son who had suddenly realized he might not know the woman he married.

He rubbed his forehead.

“Mom…”

Gloria waited.

“I need the truth.””

“You've had it in front of you.””

“I need everything.””

Gloria nodded toward the monitor.

“Then we start with that document.””

Ethan looked at the screen.

“Can we pull up the original?””

“Yes.””

Sophia suddenly moved.

“Don't.””

Ethan turned sharply.

“Why?””

Sophia stopped.

“I just mean… there’s no reason to dig through old files.””

Gloria stared at her.

“You were very confident a moment ago.””

Sophia forced a smile.

“I’m trying to keep this family from falling apart.””

Gloria's eyes hardened.

“You should have thought about that before you started pulling it apart.””

Ethan looked at his wife.

“What did you sign?””

Sophia shook her head.

“I didn't sign anything.””

“Then what is that?””

“I don't know.””

“You know something.””

“I don't!””

Her voice cracked.

Silence followed.

Gloria walked to the monitor and opened the archived footage.

The timestamp appeared.

Ethan watched.

Sophia entered the room carrying a folder.

She placed it beside the coffee table.

Then she looked around.

She took out several pages.

And finally, she pulled out a pen.

Ethan leaned closer.

“She had the document.””

Gloria nodded.

Sophia whispered, “That doesn't prove anything.””

The video continued.

Sophia placed the document on the table.

She took out her phone.

Then she called someone.

The audio was faint.

But clear enough.

Sophia said, “He hasn't noticed yet.””

Ethan’s face tightened.

“Who were you calling?””

Sophia didn't answer.

The recording continued.

A second voice came through the phone speaker.

A man's voice.

Ethan looked at his mother.

“Who is that?””

Gloria's expression changed.

“I don't know.””

Sophia suddenly rushed toward the monitor.

“Turn it off.””

Ethan stepped in front of her.

“No.””

“Ethan, please.””

“No.””

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

This time, they looked real.

“Your mother has been lying to you for years.””

Gloria stared at her.

“About what?””

Sophia wiped her cheek.

“About your father.””

Ethan froze.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

His father's photograph hung above the fireplace, smiling from another decade.

Ethan slowly looked at it.

“My father?””

Sophia nodded.

“He didn't leave this family the way you think he did.””

Gloria's face went completely still.

Ethan turned toward his mother.

“Mom?””

Gloria said nothing.

Sophia whispered, “Ask her what happened to him.””

Ethan took a step forward.

“Mom…”

Gloria finally looked at her son.

But before she could speak, the security monitor made a sharp electronic sound.

A new recording appeared automatically.

The date was twelve years earlier.

And the person standing beside Sophia in the video was someone Ethan recognized.
