Chapter 7: The Man in the Hallway

Ethan stepped in front of Gloria.

“Who are you?””

The figure remained in the dim hallway.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the man stepped into the living-room light.

He was Black, late fifties, tall and lean, wearing a charcoal coat over a white shirt. Gray threaded through his close-cropped beard. His expression was calm.

Too calm.

Sophia backed into the sofa.

“Oh God.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You know him?””

Sophia nodded.

“Daniel.””

The room went silent.

Ethan's eyes widened.

“That’s impossible.””

The man smiled without warmth.

“No. What’s impossible is that you believed I was dead.””

Gloria gripped the back of the sofa.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

“Hello, Gloria.””

Ethan turned sharply toward his mother.

“You said he was dead.””

“I thought he was.””

Daniel gave a quiet laugh.

“You didn't think I was dead.””

Gloria's eyes filled.

“You were bleeding.””

“I survived.””

“You disappeared.””

“I was forced to.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Your father.””

Ethan's face hardened.

“Why would Dad try to kill you?””

Daniel's expression changed.

“Because I found out what he was doing.””

“What?””

“Ask your mother.””

Ethan looked at Gloria.

She shook her head.

“Don't.””

“Mom, I'm done hearing that word.””

Daniel walked farther into the room.

“Your mother knows exactly what happened.””

Ethan raised his voice.

“Then somebody is going to tell me!””

Daniel stopped.

“Your father wasn't protecting you, Ethan.””

Ethan stared at him.

“He was protecting himself.””

Gloria whispered, “That's not true.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You still believe that?””

“I had no choice.””

“You always had a choice.””

Sophia stepped forward.

“Daniel, please.””

His eyes moved toward her.

“You.””

Sophia stopped.

“You were supposed to keep him away from the documents.””

“I tried.””

“You married him.””

“I fell in love with him.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“That wasn't part of the arrangement.””

Ethan looked between them.

“What arrangement?””

Neither answered.

Ethan walked toward Daniel.

“You knew Sophia before she met me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the trust.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you've been watching this house.””

Daniel nodded.

“Tonight, yes.””

“Why?””

“To see who would come looking for the original agreement.””

Ethan held up the paper.

“This?””

“No.””

Daniel pointed toward the envelope.

“That is a warning.””

“Then where's the agreement?””

Daniel looked at Gloria.

She closed her eyes.

“In the safe,” she whispered.

Ethan turned.

“What safe?””

“Your father's.””

“Where?””

Gloria looked toward the fireplace.

“Behind the panel.””

Ethan rushed to it.

He ran his fingers along the wooden trim until he found a narrow seam.

He pressed.

A hidden compartment clicked open.

Inside sat a black metal safe.

Ethan stared.

“You had this here the entire time?””

Gloria nodded.

“Your father told me never to open it.””

Daniel said, “He knew you would.””

Ethan looked back.

“Why would he leave it here?””

“Because he knew eventually you'd come looking.””

Ethan crouched.

“What's the combination?””

Gloria whispered four numbers.

Ethan entered them.

The safe opened.

Inside were three items.

A thick folder.

A flash drive.

And an old photograph.

Ethan picked up the folder.

Daniel's voice stopped him.

“Don't.””

Ethan looked up.

“Why?””

“Because once you read that agreement, you won't be able to pretend your father was a good man.””

Ethan opened it anyway.

The first page was covered in legal language.

He scanned it.

Then froze.

“What?””

Sophia moved closer.

Ethan pointed.

“My mother wasn't the beneficiary.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Ethan turned the page.

A second name appeared.

His father's.

Then another.

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“Daniel.””

Daniel said nothing.

“This trust wasn't for me.””

“No.””

“It was for you.””

Daniel nodded.

Ethan looked at Gloria.

“Why did you tell me it was mine?””

Gloria began crying.

“Because Marcus made me choose.””

“Choose what?””

“Your life or his.””

Ethan stared.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your father had stolen from me.””

Gloria shook her head.

“He stole from everyone.””

Daniel's voice hardened.

“And when I found out, he tried to make me disappear.””

“You survived.””

“Barely.””

Ethan looked down at the agreement.

A clause caught his eye.

He read it again.

Then again.

His face changed.

“Mom…”

“What?””

“This says if Daniel dies, the trust transfers to me.””

Daniel nodded.

“That was the trap.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What trap?””

“Your father wanted me dead.””

Daniel pointed at the document.

“If I died, every dollar would move to you.””

Ethan's stomach tightened.

“And if I stayed alive?””

“You got nothing.””

Ethan looked at Sophia.

“And you were supposed to make me sign.””

Sophia nodded.

“Marcus told me the only way to activate the trust was with your signature.””

“But my signature was already there.””

“Forged,” Daniel said.

Ethan stared at the page.

“Then why did he need me?””

Daniel's expression darkened.

“He didn't.””

The room went still.

“Then who needed my signature?””

Daniel looked toward Sophia.

“She did.””

Sophia's face crumpled.

“No.””

Daniel took another step.

“You were never working for Marcus.””

Sophia stared at him.

“What?””

“You were working for the person who wanted Marcus and me blamed for everything.””

Ethan looked between them.

“Who?””

Daniel's eyes shifted to Gloria.

Her tears stopped.

Daniel said one name.

“Your mother.””

Ethan stared at Gloria.

She whispered, “It's not what you think.””

Daniel's phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Too late.””

Ethan frowned.

“What?””

Daniel answered.

A voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel, get away from the boy.””

Daniel's face went pale.

He slowly lowered the phone.

Ethan heard the voice.

May you like

He knew it.

It was his father's.
