Chapter 11: The Name on My Birth Certificate
Nobody moved.
I looked at Julian.
Then at my father.
Then back at Vanessa.
"Is it true?""
Julian stepped forward.
"Maya...""
"Don't.""
My voice cracked.
"Just answer me.""
He lowered his eyes.
"Yes.""
I felt the words hit somewhere deep inside me.
"You're my biological father?""
He nodded.
I turned toward Richard.
He was crying.
"How long have you known?""
Richard swallowed.
"Since before you were born.""
I stared at him.
"Then why did you raise me?""
He looked directly at me.
"Because I loved your mother. And because I promised her that you would never grow up feeling unwanted.""
I shook my head.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Vanessa answered before he could.
"Because it was convenient.""
She walked toward the cutting table.
"Richard wanted to play the hero. Julian wanted to keep the company. Claire wanted everyone to believe she could build a perfect family.""
She picked up the photograph.
"But the truth was much messier.""
I looked at Julian.
"Did you know Mom was pregnant?""
"Yes.""
"Did you want me?""
His eyes filled.
"More than anything.""
"Then why weren't you there?""
He struggled to answer.
"Your mother and I had separated before you were born. We disagreed about the company, about our future, and about what kind of life we wanted for you.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I know.""
He took a breath.
"Richard offered to raise you as his own. Claire believed you deserved a stable home, and I agreed because I thought it was the best thing for you.""
I looked at Richard.
"And you never told me.""
He lowered his head.
"I was afraid you would stop loving me.""
My throat tightened.
"You should have trusted me enough to tell me.""
"I know.""
Vanessa laughed.
"How touching. Shall we have a family reunion?""
I turned toward her.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
"Because you need to understand that everyone in this room has something to lose.""
She tapped the transfer agreement.
"Julian wants control of Silverwing. Richard wants forgiveness. And you want to play the innocent daughter who inherited everything.""
I stared at her.
"What do you want?""
Vanessa's smile returned.
"Everything your mother left behind.""
She pushed the transfer agreement toward me.
"Sign.""
I looked at the document.
"If I sign this, you'll release Dad?""
"Of course.""
My father shook his head.
"Don't do it, Maya.""
Vanessa pressed a small knife against the rope around his wrist.
"Richard, I would strongly suggest you stop talking.""
I looked at Julian.
He gave me a barely noticeable nod.
The recording device was still running.
I picked up the pen.
"Before I sign, I want to know something.""
Vanessa sighed.
"What now?""
"Why did Mom create the Silverwing trust in my name?""
Her expression hardened.
"Because she was sentimental.""
"No. She was careful. She knew you were stealing from her.""
Vanessa leaned against the table.
"Your mother was brilliant at designing clothes. She was terrible at running a business.""
"Then why did you need to steal it?""
"Because I was better at business than she was!""
Her voice echoed through the empty studio.
She took a breath.
"Do you have any idea how many years I spent watching Claire receive praise for everything? Her designs, her talent, her reputation. She walked into a room and everyone adored her.""
She pointed at the photograph.
"Meanwhile, I was the person cleaning up the financial mess.""
Julian shook his head.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"You were never there when the bills came due!""
"I was there when Claire created the company.""
"And I made it profitable!""
"You made it yours.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Because I deserved it.""
I placed the pen down.
"You wanted Mom's life.""
She looked at me.
"I wanted what she had.""
"And when you couldn't have it, you tried to take it from her.""
Vanessa's face changed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely angry.
"Your mother had everything. A successful company. A loving husband.
A beautiful child. And she still couldn't be satisfied.""
I looked at her.
"She had one thing you couldn't tolerate.""
"What?""
"People loved her without her having to control them.""
Vanessa slapped the table.
"Sign the papers!""
I picked up the pen again.
Then I asked:
"Did you put the chemical in Mom's office?""
Vanessa stared at me.
"That's an accusation you can't prove.""
"Did Brielle know?""
Her expression flickered.
"Your stepsister was a foolish girl who did whatever I asked.""
I looked at her.
"Did Dad know?""
She smiled.
"Your father knew enough.""
Richard began shaking his head.
"No. I didn't know what she was planning.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"You signed the production order.""
"I thought it was safe!""
"You approved the shipment!""
"Because you told me Claire had approved it!""
Their voices rose.
I watched them argue.
And then Vanessa said something I hadn't expected.
"Do you think I wanted Claire dead?""
Everyone fell silent.
She looked at me.
"I wanted her out of the way. I wanted her to stop interfering. I wanted the company.""
Her voice lowered.
"But the chemical wasn't supposed to be used on her.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"Then who was it supposed to be used on?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a second, she seemed to realize she had said too much.
Julian stepped forward.
"Vanessa, explain that.""
She laughed nervously.
"You're twisting my words.""
I looked at the recorder in Julian's hand.
He hadn't moved.
The tiny red light was still blinking.
Then I heard footsteps outside.
Vanessa turned toward the door.
"Who is that?""
Nobody answered.
A loud voice called from the hallway.
"Police! Everyone stay where you are!""
Vanessa's face went white.
She grabbed the transfer agreement and tore it in half.
Then she reached into her handbag.
Julian moved immediately.
"Vanessa, don't!""
She pulled out a small bottle.
My father shouted.
"Maya, get away from her!""
Vanessa threw the bottle toward the floor.
A sharp chemical smell filled the room.
I covered my face.
Julian pulled me backward.
The bottle shattered near the cutting table.
Officers rushed through the doorway.
One grabbed Vanessa's arm.
Another secured my father.
Vanessa fought violently.
"Get your hands off me! You have no idea who I am!""
An officer forced her hands behind her back.
"You can explain that at the station.""
She turned toward me as they led her away.
"This isn't over, Maya!""
I stood shaking.
My father was finally free.
He reached toward me.
"Sweetheart...""
I stepped away.
He stopped.
Julian approached slowly.
"I know you have questions.""
I looked at him.
"Eight years.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Eight years of everyone knowing something about me that I didn't.""
His eyes filled.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at Richard.
Then at Julian.
"I don't know who my father is anymore.""
Neither man answered.
Because, for the first time, neither could pretend the truth was simple.
At the police station, Vanessa was formally questioned.
The officers recovered her phone, the transfer agreement, and several documents from her handbag.
They also found a second flash drive.
It contained company emails, bank transfers, and photographs.
But one file caught the investigator's attention.
A folder titled:
*PROJECT SILVERWING — ORIGINAL SUBJECT.*
The officer opened it.
There were photographs of chemical samples, medical reports, and a list of names.
My mother's name appeared at the top.
Beneath it was another name.
*Maya Carter.*
I stared at the screen.
"What is that?""
The investigator looked uncomfortable.
"We're still examining it.""
Julian leaned closer.
"Open the file.""
The officer clicked.
A document appeared.
It contained a medical testing schedule dated eight years earlier.
My name was listed beside a proposed chemical exposure test.
I felt the room tilt.
"Why is my name there?""
Richard stood abruptly.
"No.""
He grabbed the edge of the desk.
"No, no, no.""
I turned toward him.
"Dad?""
He looked as though he might collapse.
Then he whispered:
"Your mother found out they were testing the treatment on children.""
I stared at him.
"What children?""
He looked at me.
"You.""
And before I could ask another question, the investigator opened a second document.
It contained a photograph of me at fourteen.

Standing in my mother's sewing room.
With a small bottle of silver liquid in my hand.
