Chapter 13: The Secret Signed on My Birthday

The date on the letter was impossible to ignore.

The day I was born.

I sat motionless, staring at the screen while the hospital room seemed to shrink around me.

Julian stood beside the window, reading the document again.

"That signature," I whispered.

"It's Dr. Reed's?""

"Yes.""

"But why would he write something like that on the day I was born?""

Julian didn't answer immediately.

He enlarged the photograph.

There was another line beneath the instruction.

The biological father must remain uninformed until the arrangement is complete.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Julian.

"Was this about you?""

His face changed.

"I don't know.""

"You're my biological father. Someone was arranging something on the day I was born. What does that mean?""

He took the chair opposite me.

"Your mother told me there had been complications surrounding your birth. She said the hospital had made an administrative mistake, but she never explained the details.""

"What kind of mistake?""

"She wouldn't say.""

I stared at him.

"Did you ever question it?""

"Of course I did. But Claire was terrified. She made me promise not to investigate until she was ready to tell you.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone made promises. Everyone kept secrets. And somehow I'm the only person who never got to know the truth.""

Julian lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

I returned to the letter.

There was a second attachment, a scanned page from a private clinic.

It contained a payment authorization for Dr. Samuel Reed.

The recipient wasn't a hospital.

It was a company called *Carter Family Medical Trust*.

The account had been opened three days before my birth.

I leaned closer.

"Who owns this?""

Julian studied the details.

"Your mother.""

"Why would she pay him?""

"Maybe she was paying for something he did.""

"Or paying him to keep quiet.""

He looked at me.

"That's possible.""

I opened the final attachment.

It was a birth registration form.

My mother's name was listed.

My father's name was left blank.

A handwritten note had been added in the margin.

*Paternity confirmation withheld by request of attending physician.*

I felt cold.

"Was I ever officially registered as Richard's daughter?""

Julian shook his head.

"Not biologically. But legally, he adopted you shortly after your birth.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

He looked at the letter again.

"I think we need to find the original hospital records.""

The following morning, we returned to the police station.

The investigator assigned to Vanessa's case, Detective Harris, listened carefully as I explained what we had found.

He studied the documents.

"These records suggest Dr. Reed was involved in a financial arrangement before your birth. We need to establish what that arrangement concerned.""

"Can you question him?""

"We've already tried. He's not at his registered address.""

Julian frowned.

"Where is he?""

"His clinic closed three days ago. His office was emptied overnight.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"He knew we were looking.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"That's one possibility.""

He placed another photograph on the desk.

It showed Dr. Reed entering a private medical facility two weeks earlier.

A woman stood beside him.

I recognized her immediately.

Angela Price.

I stared at the photograph.

"Angela?""

Julian leaned forward.

"That's impossible.""

"Do you know where she is?"" the detective asked.

Julian shook his head.

"She worked with Claire for years. She helped us access the Silverwing archives.""

I remembered Angela's calm voice, her careful explanations, the way she had seemed genuinely upset when we discovered the altered formula.

"Why would she meet Dr. Reed?""

Detective Harris turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten address.

A small private laboratory on the outskirts of the city.

The detective stood.

"We'll send officers to check it.""

I grabbed my coat.

"I'm coming.""

"No, Miss Carter.""

"That woman had access to my mother's records. She may know what happened when I was born.""

"We cannot take you into an active investigation.""

I looked at Julian.

He nodded toward the detective.

"She's right. We should let them handle it.""

I hated that answer.

But for once, I listened.

Two hours later, Detective Harris called.

They had found Angela.

And Dr. Reed.

Both were inside the laboratory.

Dr. Reed had attempted to destroy several boxes of medical records.

Angela had been trying to stop him.

When officers entered, she had already placed one file aside.

It was addressed to me.

I was allowed to collect it after the evidence team finished documenting everything.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

My mother's handwriting covered the front.

*For Maya, when the truth can no longer hurt her more than the lies.*

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

The first page was a letter.

My darling Maya,

If you are reading this, then the people I trusted have failed to protect you. I wish I could have told you everything myself.

You were never an experiment. You were never a mistake. You were the greatest thing that ever happened to me.

I stopped reading.

My eyes blurred.

I forced myself to continue.

Before you were born, Dr. Reed discovered that the experimental treatment had dangerous effects on developing tissue. He was supposed to report it. Instead, he offered to hide the results in exchange for money from Vanessa.

I refused.

Vanessa wanted the formula approved. She believed the company would collapse if the research was abandoned.

When I discovered the altered records, I learned that someone had used my pregnancy records to create a false medical authorization. They claimed I had agreed to a clinical procedure.

My heart pounded.

I had not.

I turned the page.

Julian is your biological father. Richard knew this before you were born. He agreed to raise you because he loved me and because I believed he would protect you.

But there is something else.

I stopped breathing.

The person who authorized the first unauthorized test was not Vanessa.

The next sentence was underlined.

It was Richard.

I looked up.

Julian was watching me.

"What does it say?""

I handed him the letter.

He read it silently.

Then he sat down.

"No.""

I stared at him.

"She says Dad authorized the first test.""

Julian shook his head.

"Richard told me he knew nothing about the formula.""

"He lied.""

We continued reading.

Richard signed the first authorization because he believed the procedure was a harmless prenatal screening arranged by Dr. Reed. When I discovered what had happened, I confronted him.

He swore he had never intended to put you in danger. I believed he was telling the truth about that.

I felt tears slipping down my cheeks.

My father had made a terrible mistake before I was even born.

But my mother had known.

She had forgiven him.

The final paragraph was short.

There is one person who knows what happened after I confronted Richard. I could not trust the company records, the hospital, or the police. So I left the original evidence with the only person Vanessa never thought to suspect.

At the bottom was a name.

*Brielle.*

I found Brielle in the hospital cafeteria.

She was sitting alone, staring into a cup of untouched coffee.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Did they find Angela?""

"Yes.""

Her shoulders dropped.

"Thank God.""

I placed the letter on the table.

"Mom left something for me.""

Brielle looked at the envelope.

Then her face went pale.

"She told you?""

"She said you have the original evidence.""

Brielle looked toward the cafeteria entrance.

"Not here.""

"Where?""

She took a breath.

"Mom gave me a small box when I was seventeen. She said it was a collection of old designs. She told me never to open it unless someone tried to take Silverwing away from you.""

I stared at her.

"You had evidence this whole time?""

"I didn't know what it meant.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Brielle looked down.

"Because I was afraid of Mom. And because I was afraid of what would happen if people discovered I had helped her.""

I felt anger rise.

"You let me believe I was alone.""

"I know.""

She wiped her eyes.

"I can't undo that.""

"Where's the box?""

"At Mom's old apartment.""

We went there with Detective Harris.

The box was hidden inside a false bottom beneath Brielle's childhood wardrobe.

It contained sketches, medical reports, and a small cassette recorder.

There was also a handwritten list.

Four names appeared.

Vanessa Carter.

Samuel Reed.

Richard Carter.

And one more.

*Angela Price.*

Brielle stared at the page.

"Angela?""

Detective Harris picked up the recorder.

"Let's hear what's on this.""

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then my mother's voice emerged.

"If anything happens to me, the original test authorization must be examined. I did not sign it. Richard did not knowingly authorize the experiment. Someone forged the medical consent and used his signature.""

A pause.

Then another voice spoke.

Angela's voice.

"Claire, I can help you. But you have to understand that Vanessa isn't working alone.""

My mother's voice trembled.

"Who else is involved?""

Angela answered.

"The person who created the first formula.""

The recording crackled.

Then Claire asked:

"Who?""

Angela whispered a name.

The detective stopped the recorder.

He looked at us.

May you like

Then he said:

"That name changes everything.""
