Chapter 6: The Enemy Who Stayed Close
Richard Vale looked exactly like the kind of man people trusted.
That was the terrifying part.
He didn’t look dangerous.
He didn’t look like someone who destroyed lives.
He looked like someone who donated money to hospitals and shook hands at charity events.
Someone who knew which fork to use at a dinner party.
Someone who could ruin you while smiling.
He closed the door behind him.
“Everyone calm down.””
Nobody moved.
Marcus stared at him.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
Richard smiled.
“So many people in this family have been.””
My mother stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Richard looked at her.
“Actually, Vivian, this is the only place I should be.””
His eyes moved to me.
“The Mercer estate.””
I felt anger rising.
“You’re the reason I lost three years.””
He tilted his head.
“Lost?””
He walked closer.
“I gave you something your father never gave you.””
I stared.
“What?””
“The chance to start over.””
I almost couldn’t believe him.
“You burned my life down.””
“No.””
His voice stayed calm.
“Your father burned your life down. I simply controlled the damage.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You manipulated everyone.””
Richard looked at him.
“You helped.””
Marcus went silent.
That was the first time Richard smiled.
A small victory.
A reminder.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had blood on their hands.
“You all want to pretend you’re innocent,” Richard said.
“But this family was rotten long before I arrived.””
My mother’s face hardened.
“You killed him.””
Richard’s expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“You killed my husband.””
“And your husband killed thousands of others.””
The room froze.
Richard turned toward me.
“Your father was not the man you remember.””
I hated that part of me believed him.
Because every new truth destroyed an old memory.
Richard continued.
“He built an empire on lies. When he realized I had proof, he tried to destroy me.””
“You’re saying my father attacked you?””
“Yes.””
“And the fire?””
Richard looked at me.
“The fire was meant to destroy the evidence.””
My heart pounded.
“Then why did I almost die?””
His eyes narrowed.
“Because Juliette changed the plan.””
My mother gasped.
“Richard.””
“What?””
He looked at her.
“She deserves to know.””
My hands shook.
“What did Juliette do?””
Richard walked around the room slowly.
“Your sister was desperate. She thought if you disappeared, she could protect the family.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It doesn’t have to.””
He stopped.
“Fear rarely does.””
I thought about Juliette.
Her wedding day.
Her panic.
Her confession.
She had wanted me gone.
But maybe she hadn’t wanted me dead.
Maybe she had been manipulated too.
Then Richard said something that made everything stop.
“She didn’t know about the explosion.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She thought the fire would destroy documents. She didn’t know your father had installed security systems in the house.””
Marcus whispered:
“The gas line.””
Richard nodded.
“The fire became something else.””
A horrible realization.
Juliette had caused something terrible.
But someone else turned it into murder.
My mother sat down.
Her strength disappeared.
“I tried to stop it.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
My voice cracked.
“You suspected your daughters were in danger and you disappeared?””
Tears fell from her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect a secret.””
The words hurt her.
But they were true.
For years, everyone protected something.
Except me.
Richard looked at his watch.
“This emotional reunion is touching.””
I turned toward him.
“What do you want?””
He smiled.
“The documents.””
“What documents?””
“The ones inside the envelope you brought to the wedding.””
My fingers tightened.
The scorched envelope.
The one that started everything.
“You know what’s inside?””
“I know enough.””
My mother stood suddenly.
“Caroline, don’t give it to him.””
Richard sighed.
“Vivian.””
He reached into his jacket.
Not a weapon.
A phone.
He pressed a button.
A video appeared.
My breath stopped.
The screen showed Juliette.
Tied to a chair.
Her face bruised.
A man stood behind her.
Richard looked at me.
“You have ten minutes.””
My heart dropped.
“What did you do?””
He smiled.
“I’m giving you a chance to choose.””
He pointed at the phone.
“Your sister.””
Then at the envelope.
“The truth.””
The screen showed Juliette looking directly at the camera.
She was crying.
But she managed to speak.
“Caroline…”
Her voice broke.
“I’m sorry.””
Richard took the phone away.
“And Caroline?””
He stepped closer.
“The funny thing about secrets…”
He smiled.
“Is that everyone thinks they are protecting someone.””
The door opened behind him.
Two men entered.
Marcus moved.
Too late.
Richard looked at me one final time.
“Now tell me.””
May you like
He held out his hand.
“Who are you willing to lose?””
