Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed

The voice from the phone filled the basement.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

Marcus stared at the device sitting on the table.

The old phone.

The impossible phone.

The voice that came through it belonged to the man he had spent fifteen years mourning.

His father.

Thomas Carter.

But the words were impossible.

Tell our son why you pulled the trigger.

Marcus slowly turned toward his mother.

Evelyn looked like someone had taken the ground beneath her feet.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t confused.

She looked defeated.

Like she had been carrying a weight for fifteen years and finally ran out of strength to hold it.

“Mom?””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Is that true?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“Don’t say my name.””

The pain on her face deepened.

“Please.””

“I need an answer.””

The room remained silent.

Even Richard stopped smiling.

That was the first thing Marcus noticed.

The man who had controlled every conversation suddenly looked uncertain.

And that scared Marcus more than anything.

“Did you shoot him?””

Evelyn looked at the phone.

Then at her son.

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

Marcus felt like the air had disappeared.

Daniel looked away.

Richard watched carefully.

And Marcus realized something.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except him.

“You all knew.””

Nobody responded.

“You all knew.””

His voice grew louder.

“My whole life was built around a lie.””

Evelyn stepped toward him.

“No.””

He moved away.

“Don’t.””

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“You shot my father.””

“I shot him.””

The correction made him freeze.

“What?””

Evelyn’s hands trembled.

“But I did not kill him.””

The room became silent again.

Marcus stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Evelyn looked at the phone.

“The night your father disappeared was the night everything changed.””

Fifteen years earlier.

Rain covered the windows of the Carter house.

Marcus was seventeen years old.

He remembered that night differently.

He remembered his mother crying.

He remembered the police arriving.

He remembered people whispering.

But he never remembered his father leaving.

Because Thomas Carter never left.

He came home that night bleeding.

Not badly.

But enough.

Evelyn had found him standing in the kitchen.

His shirt torn.

His hands shaking.

“Thomas?””

He looked up.

And the first thing he said was:

“Where is Marcus?””

That was what she remembered most.

Not his injuries.

Not the fear in his eyes.

His first concern had been their son.

“He’s upstairs,” Evelyn had whispered.

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Good.””

“What happened?””

He looked at her.

“They know.””

Her heart dropped.

“Who?””

“Everyone.””

Thomas placed a folder on the table.

Inside were documents.

Names.

Evidence.

Richard Blake’s plan.

The financial theft.

The manipulation.

The people involved.

And one name Evelyn never expected to see.

Daniel Carter.

“Your brother?””

Thomas nodded.

“I don’t think he wanted this to happen.””

“But he helped them.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked at the papers.

“How long have you known?””

“Months.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Thomas looked toward the stairs.

“Because every person I told became a target.””

Then they heard it.

A car outside.

A door closing.

Footsteps.

Thomas’s face changed.

“They found me.””

Evelyn grabbed the phone.

“We need to call the police.””

“No.””

“Thomas.””

“No police.””

“Why?””

“Because someone inside the department is working with them.””

Fear entered her chest.

“What are we going to do?””

Thomas looked at her.

And Evelyn remembered something about that moment.

He wasn’t afraid of dying.

He was afraid of leaving Marcus alone.

“You have to make them believe I’m gone.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

“I need you to listen.””

The footsteps grew closer.

Thomas reached into the drawer.

He pulled out a gun.

Evelyn froze.

“Why do you have that?””

“For protection.””

“I hate guns.””

“I know.””

The back door opened.

A figure moved through the darkness.

Thomas stepped in front of Evelyn.

Then everything happened too quickly.

A struggle.

A shout.

A flash.

The gun went off.

And Thomas fell.

Evelyn screamed.

She dropped beside him.

“Thomas!””

His eyes opened.

He was alive.

Barely.

Then he whispered:

“Run.””

Marcus listened without speaking.

The story sounded impossible.

But he knew his mother.

He knew when she was lying.

And she wasn’t lying now.

“What happened after?””

Evelyn wiped her tears.

“I thought he was dead.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought I killed him.””

“But you said you didn’t.””

“I didn’t know.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

“The bullet hit him.””

She looked at the floor.

“But not where I thought.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“The person who entered the house switched the evidence.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I arrived minutes later.””

Marcus stared.

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Your father asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who attacked him was still watching.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“And Dad?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“He survived.””

A silence followed.

“Then why didn’t he come home?””

Her eyes filled again.

“Because he believed coming home would get you killed.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He could have found another way.””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“He should have.””

That was the first time she admitted it.

The first time she allowed herself to be blamed.

“But he made a choice.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What choice?””

“To disappear.””

Richard suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

“You’re all acting like this is some beautiful family tragedy.””

His voice was colder now.

“It wasn’t.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why are you still here?””

Richard smiled.

“Because you still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That your father’s biggest mistake was believing he could trust people.””

He looked at Evelyn.

“He trusted her.””

Then Daniel.

“He trusted him.””

Then Marcus.

“And he trusted you.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Richard stepped forward.

“It means Thomas knew exactly what would happen.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Richard.””

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Let him know.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What?””

Richard pointed at the phone.

“The recording wasn’t just activated by accident.””

Evelyn froze.

Marcus noticed.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Your father built this entire plan around one moment.””

“The transfer.””

“Yes.””

“The wedding.””

“Yes.””

“Me choosing my mother.””

Richard nodded.

“But you still don’t understand why.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Why?””

Richard smiled.

“Because your father wasn’t trying to find the person who betrayed him.””

Everyone became still.

“He already knew.””

Marcus stared.

“Who?””

Richard looked directly at Daniel.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“No.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

Richard laughed softly.

“The person who betrayed Thomas Carter was his own brother.””

The room exploded into silence.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“No.””

Daniel didn’t speak.

“Tell him,” Richard said.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

Marcus stepped back.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Daniel looked at him.

And that hesitation answered everything.

Marcus felt sick.

“You betrayed him.””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

“I thought I was helping.””

“You helped destroy my family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I was trying to save it.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because it’s true.””

Richard smiled.

“See? He still believes he’s the hero.””

Daniel suddenly turned toward Richard.

“You manipulated me.””

Richard’s smile faded.

“You were weak.””

The words landed.

And Marcus understood.

Richard didn’t see Daniel as an ally.

He saw him as a tool.

Daniel looked down.

“I gave Richard information.””

Marcus stared.

“What information?””

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“Your father’s plans.””

The room went quiet.

“And when you realized what you had done?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“I tried to fix it.””

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I couldn’t.””

The phone on the table suddenly crackled.

Thomas’s voice returned.

“Marcus.””

Everyone froze.

“If you are hearing this, then the truth is finally out.””

Marcus stepped closer.

The recording continued.

“Your uncle betrayed me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“But he was not the only one.””

Marcus stopped.

Richard’s expression changed.

Thomas continued:

“The person who destroyed our family was someone who knew exactly how to turn love into a weapon.””

A pause.

Then:

“Marcus, if you still trust Vanessa…”

The room went silent.

Marcus felt his heart drop.

“…you need to ask her why she was standing beside the person who tried to kill me.””

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Marcus looked at Richard.

Then Daniel.

Then his mother.

Finally, his eyes moved to the phone.

Because there was only one person left.

One person whose secrets had not been fully revealed.

Vanessa.

His phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

From Vanessa.

Three words.

*I need help.*

Then another message arrived.

A photo attachment.

Marcus opened it.

And saw Vanessa standing outside the Carter house.

With a gun pointed at her head.

The person holding it was Richard Blake.

The timestamp was from two minutes ago.

Marcus looked up.

Richard was still standing in front of him.

Smiling.

But the photo proved something impossible.

There were two Richards.

And one of them was somewhere else.

Marcus whispered:

“Dad was right.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The person we trusted most…”

May you like

He stared at the screen.

“…was never who we thought they were.””
