Chapter 9: The Last Lie Before the Truth
Marcus stared at the photograph on his phone.
Vanessa.
Outside the Carter house.
A gun pressed against her head.
Richard Blake standing behind her.
The timestamp.
Two minutes ago.
His mind struggled to process what his eyes were seeing.
Because Richard was standing in front of him.
Right now.
In this room.
Impossible.
Unless…
Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.
The man standing across from him smiled.
Not Richard’s usual confident smile.
Something colder.
Something that didn’t belong to the man Marcus had known.
“You figured it out.””
Marcus’s blood ran cold.
“Who are you?””
The man tilted his head.
“After everything, that’s your question?””
Marcus stepped backward.
“Where is Richard?””
The man laughed.
A quiet laugh.
Then he reached up and touched his face.
For a second, Marcus didn’t understand.
Then he saw it.
The small scar near the jaw.
The difference in the eyes.
The subtle details that his mind had ignored because he trusted the person standing in front of him.
“You’re not Richard.””
The man smiled.
“No.””
Evelyn moved closer to Marcus.
“Marcus, get away from him.””
The man sighed.
“Evelyn, after all these years, you still don’t understand.””
“Who are you?””
He looked at her.
Then removed the thin disguise covering parts of his face.
The room went silent.
Because the face underneath belonged to someone Marcus knew.
Someone who had been at every family event.
Someone who had helped arrange the wedding.
Someone who had stood beside Vanessa.
Someone who had access to everything.
“James.””
Marcus whispered the name.
James Whitmore.
The family attorney.
The man who had handled Carter Holdings’ legal affairs for years.
James looked almost disappointed.
“I was hoping you would take longer.””
Marcus stared.
“You worked with Richard.””
James smiled.
“I worked with everyone.””
The answer was terrifying.
Outside the house, the rain continued falling.
Vanessa sat in the car, her hands tied, trying not to panic.
Richard sat beside her.
The real Richard.
The man from the photograph.
The man who had been hiding in the shadows.
“You know,” Richard said, looking through the windshield, “your father was always too emotional.””
Vanessa glared at him.
“You killed him.””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
She laughed bitterly.
“After everything, you still lie.””
“I didn’t kill Thomas.””
“Then what did you do?””
Richard looked away.
“I gave him a choice.””
“What choice?””
“To disappear.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You threatened him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked her.
“I told him if he stayed, Marcus would suffer.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“So you admit it.””
Richard nodded.
“I do.””
“Why?””
“Because Thomas had something I needed.””
“The company?””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
He looked toward the old house.
“His son.””
Inside, Marcus could barely speak.
James Whitmore stood calmly in the basement.
The same man who had once brought him legal documents.
The same man who had smiled at him after his father’s funeral.
“You knew everything.””
James nodded.
“Yes.””
“My father trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“My mother trusted you.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
James looked around the room.
“Because trust is the easiest thing to weaponize.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“You destroyed my family.””
James shrugged.
“No.””
He pointed toward the photographs.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
James walked closer.
“Your father was obsessed with protecting the company.””
“My father protected people.””
“He controlled them.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You don’t know him.””
James smiled.
“I knew him better than you did.””
The words hurt because Marcus feared they were partly true.
He had spent years seeing his father as a hero.
Maybe heroes were complicated.
Maybe they made mistakes.
But that didn’t excuse what happened.
“You helped Richard fake everything.””
James nodded.
“I helped create a situation.””
“What situation?””
“One where you would eventually choose.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Choose what?””
James looked toward Evelyn.
“Between the truth and the comfort of a lie.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You were always the one.””
James smiled.
“Yes.””
“You were the person Thomas suspected.””
“Yes.””
“You manipulated Daniel.””
“Yes.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was a fool.””
James looked at him.
“You were useful.””
The words cut.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
For the first time, he saw how much regret the man carried.
“How did my father survive?””
James’s expression changed.
Slightly.
But Marcus noticed.
“You don’t know.””
James didn’t answer.
“You don’t know where he is.””
A pause.
Then James smiled.
“Does it matter?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he’s my father.””
James studied him.
Then said:
“That’s exactly why Thomas won.””
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
James looked toward the ceiling.
“What was that?””
Marcus suddenly understood.
A distraction.
Someone else was inside.
Then the lights went out.
The basement fell into darkness.
A second later, emergency lights flickered on.
But James was gone.
Marcus ran toward the stairs.
“Vanessa!””
Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, wait.””
“No.””
He pulled away.
“She needs help.””
Daniel followed.
“We go together.””
For once, Marcus didn’t argue.
They reached the living room.
The front door was open.
Rain blew inside.
And on the floor was a phone.
Vanessa’s phone.
Marcus picked it up.
A video was playing.
James’s face appeared on the screen.
“Marcus.””
Everyone froze.
“If you’re watching this, then you found out.””
The video continued.
“I know you want answers.””
Marcus stared.
“You want to know why your father disappeared.””
The screen showed old footage.
Thomas Carter.
Alive.
Speaking.
Sitting in a room Marcus had never seen.
“I made a mistake,” Thomas said in the video.
Marcus stopped breathing.
His father continued:
“I thought I could defeat people who only cared about power.””
The footage shook slightly.
“I was wrong.””
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
“The truth is, the company was never the target.””
A pause.
“You were.””
Marcus felt a chill.
James’s voice returned.
“Your father discovered something before he disappeared.””
The video changed.
Documents appeared.
Medical records.
Birth records.
Marcus frowned.
“What is this?””
Evelyn looked at the screen.
Then covered her mouth.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Mom?””
Her face had gone pale.
The documents showed a name.
A name he recognized.
A name connected to his own family.
James’s voice continued:
“The reason everyone fought over Carter Holdings wasn’t because of money.””
A pause.
“It was because of who had the legal right to inherit it.””
Marcus stared.
“I don’t understand.””
Then the final document appeared.
The title at the top made his entire body go cold.
*PATERNITY CONFIRMATION REPORT*
His eyes moved down.
The names.
The signatures.
The results.
Marcus couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
Evelyn whispered:
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“What is this?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she couldn’t.
The truth was sitting on the screen.
His entire identity.
Everything he believed.
Everything he knew.
James’s voice became quieter.
“Your father knew the truth.””
The video ended.
A final message appeared.
*Ask your mother who your real father is.*
Marcus slowly turned toward Evelyn.
The woman who had raised him.
The woman who had sacrificed everything.
The woman who had protected him.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
The silence was unbearable.
Marcus stared at the report again.
Then back at her.
“Is Dad my father?””
Evelyn couldn’t answer.
That was enough.
A sound came from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stood there.
Alive.
Free.
But terrified.
Marcus rushed toward her.
“What happened?””
She looked past him.
At the document.
At Evelyn.
Then whispered:
“Marcus…”
Her voice broke.
“You need to know something.””
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I saw the original report.””
His heart sank.
“And?””
She swallowed.
“Your father already knew.””
Marcus felt dizzy.
“Knew what?””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
Then said:
“Your father knew you weren’t his biological son.””
Nobody spoke.
The rain outside grew louder.
Marcus stood in the middle of the room, surrounded by the people who had spent his entire life protecting a secret.
Then Vanessa said the one sentence that changed everything:
“Thomas Carter didn’t disappear because someone wanted his company.””
She looked at him.
“He disappeared because someone wanted you to never discover who you really are.””
And from somewhere outside the house…
A car door slammed.
Everyone turned toward the window.
A figure stood beneath the rain.
Watching them.
A figure Marcus recognized instantly.
His father.
Thomas Carter.
Alive.
And he was not alone.
Beside him stood the one person nobody expected.
The person who had supposedly died fifteen years ago.
May you like
His mother’s first husband.
Marcus’s real biological father.
