Chapter 4: The Truth Beneath the Lies

I moved before I even thought.

Years of surviving taught me one thing.

When your instincts scream, listen.

I grabbed the weapon from the locked drawer in my office and moved toward the nursery.

Quiet.

Slow.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Darius was right behind me.

He didn’t ask questions.

That was why I trusted him.

We reached the hallway.

The nursery door was open.

I knew I had closed it.

My heart started pounding.

“Kai.””

I rushed inside.

My son was still in his crib.

Safe.

Sleeping.

But someone had been there.

The window was open.

A cold breeze moved the curtains.

Darius checked the room.

“No one.””

I looked down.

A small envelope rested on the floor.

Another message.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My family.

Me.

Zora.

Kai.

Taken yesterday.

My stomach dropped.

Someone had been watching us.

Someone close enough to take a picture inside my home.

On the back of the photograph were five words.

“You should have stayed buried.””

I stared at the message.

And something inside me changed.

The pain was still there.

The confusion.

The betrayal.

But underneath it was something stronger.

Protection.

Nobody was touching my son.

Nobody.

Amara came running when she heard the noise.

“What happened?””

I handed her the photograph.

Her face turned pale.

“They know.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“The people my sister was hiding from.””

I wanted answers.

I needed answers.

But first, I needed my son somewhere safe.

Within an hour, I moved Kai to a private location only Darius and I knew.

My house, the place I thought was a fortress, suddenly felt like a trap.

Amara came with us.

I didn’t fully trust her yet.

That hurt to admit.

Because she had brought me the truth.

But truth didn’t erase the fact that my entire life had been built on lies.

The next morning, Zora called again.

This time, I was ready.

“Tell me where you are.””

“I can’t.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Silence.

Then her voice.

“I was never supposed to survive.””

I closed my eyes.

“Explain.””

“Malik, six months ago, someone tried to kill me.””

The words hit like a punch.

“They made it look like complications from childbirth.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Who?””

“I don’t know everyone involved.””

“Zora.””

“But I know one person.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who?””

“Elias Vance.””

I looked at Amara.

She already knew.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he told me himself.””

The silence afterward felt endless.

“Zora, why didn’t you come to me?””

“Because he knew about you.””

“What does that mean?””

“He knew your weaknesses.””

I looked at Kai sleeping nearby.

My son.

“He knew you loved me.””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“And he knew if I came back too soon, he would use you to get to me.””

I sat down.

For years, I thought power meant having enough money, enough influence, enough people willing to protect you.

I was wrong.

Power meant knowing who wanted to destroy you.

And I had been blind.

“Where are you now?”” I asked.

“I have been moving.””

“Alone?””

“No.””

That answer bothered me.

“Who are you with?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who helped me survive.””

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the call cut.

I looked at my phone.

Dead.

Not disconnected.

Dead.

The battery had been full.

Darius checked the signal.

“Someone blocked it.””

I looked at Amara.

“Your sister has been running for six months.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew nothing.””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

For the first time, I saw past her fear.

I saw a younger sister who lost someone once and thought she had lost her again.

I sat down across from her.

“Why did she leave you?””

Amara looked at the floor.

“She thought she was protecting me.””

“From what?””

“From the truth.””

I waited.

She whispered:

“Zora wasn’t the only one who disappeared.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Amara looked up.

“Before my sister vanished…”

She swallowed.

“Someone erased our entire family.””

The room went silent.

“What family?””

She looked at Kai.

“My parents.””

I felt a chill.

“What happened to them?””

“They died.””

“How?””

Amara’s eyes met mine.

“The same way Zora was supposed to die.””

And suddenly, I realized something.

This wasn’t just about my wife.

This wasn’t about one fake death.

This was about a pattern.

A pattern that started years ago.

May you like

And somehow…

My son was the reason someone was willing to finish it.
