Chapter 6: The Betrayal We Never Saw
The letter was only two pages.
But it carried more weight than every business deal I had ever signed.
More weight than every dollar I owned.
Because it was Zora’s voice.
Not a memory.
Not a photograph.
Her words.
Her thoughts.
Her fear.
I read it silently first.
Then again.
Then I finally forced myself to read the part that hurt the most.
Malik, I need you to understand something. If I disappear, it is not because I stopped loving you.
I closed my eyes.
My throat tightened.
Lena looked away.
Amara covered her mouth.
I kept reading.
I found out the truth about my family. The people who destroyed them are still here. They know about Kai.
They know about you. And they know exactly what I would do to protect you.
I looked up.
“Who else knew?””
Lena didn’t answer.
That was an answer by itself.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Someone close to you.””
My blood ran cold.
“Name.””
Lena hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Marcus.””
I froze.
“No.””
Marcus Reed had been my closest friend since college.
My first investor.
My business partner.
The man who stood beside me when I had nothing.
The man who gave a speech at my wedding.
The man who held my shoulder at Zora’s funeral.
Impossible.
Lena shook her head.
“I didn’t want to believe it either.””
“Why would he do this?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at Amara.
She looked just as shocked.
“Malik…”
I ignored her.
I picked up my phone.
Called Marcus.
He answered on the second ring.
“Brother.””
That word almost made me sick.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“At home.””
“I need to see you.””
“Everything okay?””
“No.””
Another pause.
Longer this time.
“What happened?””
I looked at the letter.
“You tell me.””
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
“What did you find?””
My heart dropped.
Because he knew.
He knew something.
And he had just admitted it.
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Darius immediately understood.
“Marcus?””
I nodded.
The man who helped me build my empire.
The man who knew every weakness I had.
The man who knew exactly how much losing Zora destroyed me.
Maybe he wasn’t the person who hurt her.
But he knew something.
And that made him dangerous.
We returned home that night.
But Marcus was gone.
His house was empty.
His phones were disconnected.
His office had been cleared.
Like he had disappeared before we even arrived.
Darius found one thing.
A hidden safe.
Inside was a folder.
Documents.
Photographs.
Records.
And one name repeated over and over.
VANCE HOLDINGS.
Marcus had been working with Elias.
The betrayal wasn’t a theory anymore.
It was real.
But there was one more thing.
A photograph.
Recent.
Taken three weeks ago.
Zora.
Alive.
Standing beside someone.
Someone I didn’t recognize.
I picked up the picture.
“Who is that?””
Amara stared.
Then her face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
She pointed.
The woman beside Zora was older.
Short hair.
A scar on her wrist.
The same scar from the security footage.
The woman who entered Kai’s room.
The woman everyone thought was an enemy.
“She’s not working against Zora,” Amara whispered.
“Who is she?””
Amara looked at me.
“She’s Lena Carter.””
My eyes moved toward the woman sitting across the room.
The same Lena who gave us the letter.
The same Lena who claimed she wanted to help.
But the woman in the photograph looked younger.
Different.
My mind raced.
“Lena?””
The woman slowly stood.
Everyone turned.
Her face had changed.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had finally accepted there was no more hiding.
“I was going to tell you.””
Darius moved closer.
“Tell us what?””
Lena looked at me.
“The woman who entered Kai’s room wasn’t trying to kidnap him.””
“Then why hide her identity?””
“Because she was afraid you would kill her before hearing the truth.””
“Who?””
Lena’s eyes filled.
“Zora.””
I stopped breathing.
“She sent me.””
The room went silent.
“She wanted to see Kai.””
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Why didn’t she come herself?””
Lena looked down.
“Because the person watching your house…”
She swallowed.
“Is someone you invite inside.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Before Lena could answer, every light in the room went out.
Then came the sound.
A single gunshot.
May you like
And a scream from upstairs.
Kai.
