Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Loan

I didn't open the door immediately.
I stood perfectly still, listening.
Dad's voice was low.
"Not here, Daniel.""
The other man answered.
"You told me the paperwork was handled.""
"It is.""
"Then why did the bank send me a notice saying the guarantor hasn't confirmed?""
Silence.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"And why is Claire's name on a document she supposedly signed three weeks ago?""
I stepped away from the door.
Three weeks ago.
That was before the Mercedes.
Before I discovered the transfer.
Before I knew Grandma's estate had been stolen.
Someone had been using my identity long before I realized what was happening.
I grabbed my phone and opened the voice recorder.
Then I moved closer to the door.
Dad said, "I'll take care of it.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"You've been saying that for six months.""
"Keep your voice down.""
"You owe me $82,000, Richard. I didn't invest in your restaurant because I wanted to become your charity.""
Eighty-two thousand.
I covered my mouth.
Dad answered sharply.
"The loan will clear Monday.""
"And what happens if the bank investigates the signatures?""
"It won't.""
"How can you be so sure?""
There was a pause.
Then Dad said something I would never forget.
"Because my daughter won't report her own father.""
My phone nearly slipped from my hand.
Daniel answered.
"You'd better hope you're right.""
Footsteps moved toward the front door.
I heard it open.
Then Ethan spoke.
"Daniel, wait.""
The door closed again.
I stepped away from mine and sat on the bed.
My phone showed that the recording was still running.
I stopped it.
Then I sent the audio to James Carter.
A few seconds later, my bedroom door opened.
Dad stood there.
His expression was controlled, but his eyes were furious.
"Come downstairs.""
I closed my laptop.
"Why?""
"Because we're going to settle this.""
"I'm not discussing anything without my attorney.""
He laughed.
"Your attorney?""
"James Carter.""
His face tightened.
"That man has been filling your head with lies.""
"Grandma trusted him.""
"Your grandmother was confused.""
"She left me a letter.""
"Give it to me.""
"No.""
Dad stepped inside and shut the door.
"Claire, I am your father. I have spent my entire life making sacrifices for this family.""
"Then why did you steal my money?""
"I didn't steal anything.""
"You transferred ten thousand dollars without permission.""
"I was going to replace it.""
"You forged my signature.""
His expression changed.
For a second, I thought he might deny it.
Instead, he said, "You don't understand how these things work.""
I stared at him.
"That's not a denial.""
He moved closer.
"Your grandmother left a mess. I had to deal with it.""
"By selling my house?""
"By protecting the family.""
"Where did the $186,000 go?""
He looked away.
I stood.
"Where did it go, Dad?""
"Business obligations.""
"Which business?""
"That's none of your concern.""
I picked up my phone.
"Then I'll let the police investigate.""
He grabbed my wrist.
"Don't.""
His fingers tightened.
I looked down at his hand.
"Let go.""
He released me.
For the first time, I saw something in his expression that I had never seen before.
Panic.
"Claire, listen. If you report this, you're going to hurt people who had nothing to do with it.""
"Who?""
"Ethan.""
I stared at him.
"Why would Ethan be hurt?""
He hesitated.
Then he sat on the edge of my bed.
"His business is connected to the loan.""
I looked toward the door.
"What business?""
"The investment company Daniel and Ethan started.""
"Ethan doesn't have an investment company.""
"He's a partner.""
"With what money?""
Dad rubbed his forehead.
"Some of the estate funds were used to get it started.""
My stomach dropped.
"You used my inheritance to fund Ethan's business?""
"I was trying to help him become independent.""
"And now you need me to guarantee the debt?""
Dad said nothing.
I took a step back.
"How much money is actually missing?""
He stared at the floor.
"Claire, I can fix this.""
"How much?""
"Three hundred and fifty thousand.""
The number sounded unreal.
I sat down slowly.
"Your loan is for $350,000?""
"Yes.""
"And you want me to sign as guarantor?""
"It would only be temporary.""
I looked at him.
"You want me to take responsibility for a debt I didn't create?""
"I would never let anything happen to you.""
"You already have.""
His phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and stood.
"Stay here. Don't contact anyone.""
He left.
I waited until I heard his footsteps disappear downstairs.
Then I opened my laptop and called James.
He answered immediately.
"Claire, I've listened to the recording.""
"Can we stop the loan?""
"We can notify the lender that your identity may have been used without authorization. But I need to see the complete application.""
I forwarded the PDF.
James went quiet as he reviewed it.
Finally, he spoke.
"There's a problem.""
"What?""
"Your father didn't list you as an ordinary guarantor.""
"What does that mean?""
"He listed you as the primary beneficial owner of the company receiving the loan.""
I felt the room spin.
"What company?""
"Northbridge Holdings LLC.""
I had never heard of it.
"Who owns that?""
"According to the filing, you do.""
I shook my head.
"I don't own any company.""
"That's what we're going to establish.""
He continued reading.
"There's also a second issue. The company was registered using your personal information.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"Can he do that?""
"Not legally without your authorization.""
"Then why would he?""
James paused.
"Because the bank may have required a company with a clean ownership history to approve the financing. Your father appears to have used your identity to create one.""
I stared at the screen.
My father hadn't just stolen money.
He had built an entire financial arrangement around my name.
James continued.
"I want you to come to my office first thing tomorrow. Bring your identification, your bank records, and every message you've received.""
"I will.""
"And Claire?""
"Yes?""
"Don't sign anything. Not even something your parents claim is just a formality.""
I promised.
When the call ended, I searched for Northbridge Holdings LLC.
The company's website was almost empty.
A generic logo.
A mailing address.
A brief description of investment services.
But there was one section that made my heart stop.
*Leadership Team.*
I clicked it.
Three photographs appeared.
The first was my father.
The second was Daniel, the man who had visited our house.
The third was Ethan.
I stared at the screen.
My brother wasn't just receiving money from the company.
He was listed as its chief operating officer.
I took a screenshot.
Then I opened the state business registry.
Northbridge Holdings had been incorporated nine months earlier.
The registered owner was listed as:
*Claire Elizabeth Miller — 100% membership interest.*
My date of birth was correct.
My home address was correct.
Even my signature appeared on the registration document.
I zoomed in.
It was forged.
Again.
I felt tears gathering, but I wiped them away.
A new email appeared.
This one came from Daniel.
The subject was:
*We Need To Talk Without Richard.*
I hesitated before opening it.
The message contained only three lines.
Claire, your father hasn't told you the full story.
The $350,000 loan isn't for his business.
It's to pay off the people who funded the original investment.
I read it twice.
Then another email arrived.
A photograph was attached.
It showed a bank transfer confirmation.
The sender was Northbridge Holdings LLC.
The recipient was an account I didn't recognize.
The amount was $186,000.
The exact amount Grandma had left me.
Beneath the photograph, Daniel had written:
Your father told me you approved this transfer. I now know that wasn't true.
I stared at the screen.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"Why are you sending me this?""
His voice sounded exhausted.
"Because I think your father is preparing to disappear.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
"He's been moving money out of the company for weeks. He told us the bank was about to release the final loan, but the bank has started asking questions.""
"Where is he going?""
"I don't know.""
"Then why do you think he's leaving?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Because he booked three international flights this morning.""
"Three?""
"One for himself. One for your mother. And one for Ethan.""
I couldn't breathe.
"Where?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"London.""
I looked at the family photograph on my desk.
My parents.
My brother.
Me.
Four people smiling at Grandma's birthday dinner.
I had thought we were a family.
Now three of them were preparing to leave the country while I was left holding a debt I had never agreed to.
Then Daniel said one final thing.
"Claire, there's something else. Your father didn't just put your name on the company.""
"What else did he do?""
"He made you the person legally responsible for its previous debts.""
I closed my eyes.
"How much?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
"Nearly $600,000.""
And just as I began to understand the size of the disaster, a message appeared on my phone from my mother.
*Claire, please don't go to the lawyer tomorrow. Your father has something important he needs to show you.*
May you like
A second message followed.
*It's about what Grandma really did before she died.*
