The Things She Hid / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Letters Claire Left Behind

I waited until Lily fell asleep before I opened the first letter.

She had refused to leave the blue box.

Not because she understood everything happening.

Because it was the first time in years she felt like she had something that belonged to her.

Something Vanessa couldn’t remove.

I sat at the kitchen table after midnight.

The same table where my daughter’s cookies had been thrown onto the floor hours earlier.

The same place where my entire understanding of my marriage had changed.

The box sat in front of me.

I touched the first envelope.

Lily’s name was written in Claire’s handwriting.

Beautiful.

Careful.

The kind of handwriting that made you hear the person’s voice.

I opened it.

My hands were shaking.

My sweet Lily,

If you are reading this, I hope your daddy is sitting beside you.

I hope he has told you every day how loved you are.

I hope you know that even though I could not stay, I never left you.

I stopped reading.

My eyes blurred.

I had to put the letter down.

Because I knew Claire.

I knew she wrote this when she was sick.

I knew she was preparing for a future she never wanted.

And somehow, she had been more prepared for losing her life than I had been for living without her.

I kept reading.

I want you to remember something important.

Love does not disappear when someone leaves.

People might tell you to forget.

They might tell you that holding onto memories means you are stuck.

But your memories are proof that something beautiful happened.

Nobody gets to take that away.

I looked toward the staircase.

Toward Lily’s room.

Then toward the hallway.

Toward Vanessa.

My stomach tightened.

Because now I knew.

Claire had predicted this.

Not Vanessa specifically.

But someone trying to erase her.

I read the next paragraph.

Your daddy has a big heart, but sometimes his heart makes him trust people too quickly.

I almost laughed.

Even after death, Claire knew me better than I knew myself.

I kept reading.

Protect Lily’s heart.

She will always need to know where she came from.

The next part made me stop.

Because Claire had written something I didn’t understand.

There is something I need you to know about Vanessa.

I stared at the page.

Vanessa.

My eyes moved over the words again.

Then again.

The room felt suddenly too quiet.

I read the sentence below.

I don’t know what her intentions are, but I noticed things that worried me.

I pushed the letter away.

My mind started racing.

Claire knew Vanessa.

Of course she did.

Vanessa was Claire’s friend before she became my wife.

At least, that was what I believed.

They met through a charity event years before Claire died.

Vanessa had been one of the people who helped our family during Claire’s illness.

She brought meals.

She visited the hospital.

She comforted Lily.

She comforted me.

At the time, I thought she was an angel.

But now every memory looked different.

I opened the next letter.

This one wasn’t for Lily.

It was addressed to me.

My hands went cold.

I almost didn’t open it.

Because part of me knew.

Whatever was inside would change everything.

The letter began:

My love,

If you are reading this, something happened that made you open this box before you were ready.

I smiled sadly.

Claire always knew me.

I continued.

I need you to promise me something.

Do not ignore what you feel just because you want peace.

Peace built on lies is not peace.

I stopped.

Because that was exactly what I had done.

I wanted peace.

I wanted my life to stop feeling broken.

And when Vanessa walked into that broken space, I let myself believe she was the answer.

The next line made my heart race.

I saw Vanessa looking through my things.

I looked toward the dark hallway.

The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Claire continued:

She asked questions about my belongings. About my insurance documents. About things that did not concern her.

I stared at the page.

Insurance documents.

I stood so quickly the chair scraped against the floor.

Then I heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A door closing.

I looked toward the staircase.

Someone was awake.

I quietly walked out of the kitchen.

The hallway was dark.

“Vanessa?””

No answer.

I walked upstairs.

Her bedroom door was slightly open.

Inside, she was standing beside the window.

Waiting.

“You read them,” she said.

It wasn’t a question.

I held the letter in my hand.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her face looked exhausted.

“Because I knew this would happen.””

“What would happen?””

“You’d look at me like this.””

“Like what?””

“Like I’m a monster.””

I stared at her.

“I don’t know what you are anymore.””

She looked down.

Then she said something I never expected.

“Your wife was right about one thing.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked up.

“She knew I was hiding something.””

The silence afterward felt endless.

“Then tell me.””

She swallowed.

“I didn’t hide Claire’s things because I hated her.””

“Then why?””

Her eyes moved toward the blue box.

“Because Claire found out something about me before she died.””

My voice dropped.

“What?””

Vanessa took a breath.

May you like

And then she said the words that changed the entire story.

“She knew I wasn’t the person you thought I was.””
