Chapter 6: The Name In The Notebook
I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Claire’s handwriting.
I saw Lily’s face.
I saw Vanessa standing in that room admitting pieces of the truth but still holding something back.
And that was the part I hated most.
Not knowing.
The next morning, I sat at the kitchen table with the blue box in front of me.
Lily was beside me eating cereal quietly.
Normally, she would have been talking about cartoons or school or some random story only a six-year-old could create.
But she was different.
Careful.
Watching.
Like she was waiting for someone to take something away again.
I hated that.
I hated that my daughter had learned fear before she learned confidence.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
“Yes?””
“Are we leaving?””
The question surprised me.
“Why would we leave?””
She shrugged.
“Because Vanessa is mad.””
I reached across the table and held her hand.
“Listen to me.””
She looked up.
“None of this is your fault.””
She nodded.
But I knew children sometimes hear words without believing them.
“I mean it, Lily.””
“Okay.””
I squeezed her hand.
“Your mommy loved you more than anything.””
Her eyes moved toward the box.
“Are those her letters?””
“Yes.””
“Can I read them?””
I smiled sadly.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
Because some truths are too heavy for children.
Because some secrets belong to adults.
Because I was still trying to understand them myself.
But I didn’t say any of that.
“Because I want to read them first.””
She accepted that.
Children are amazing like that.
They don’t always need perfect explanations.
Sometimes they just need to know someone is protecting them.
After Lily went upstairs, I opened the box again.
There was one item I hadn’t noticed before.
A small black notebook.
Claire’s handwriting was on the cover.
PRIVATE.
I hesitated.
Then opened it.
The first pages were normal.
Appointments.
Thoughts.
Little reminders.
Then I found a section that made my heart stop.
A list of names.
At the top was Marcus.
Claire’s brother.
Below his name were dates.
Amounts of money.
Notes.
I kept reading.
Then I saw another name.
Vanessa.
But underneath Vanessa’s name, Claire had written:
“She isn’t the beginning.””
My fingers went cold.
I turned the page.
Another name.
A name I recognized immediately.
My business partner.
Daniel.
I stared at it.
Daniel had been my friend since college.
The man who helped me build my company.
The man who stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who told me after Claire died that I needed to “find happiness again.””
I read Claire’s note beside his name.
“Ask him about the account.””
What account?
I flipped through more pages.
There were details about transfers.
Meetings.
Conversations Claire had secretly recorded dates for.
Not recordings.
Just notes.
But enough to show she had been investigating something.
Something bigger than Vanessa.
Something that involved people close to us.
The front door opened.
I quickly closed the notebook.
“Daddy?””
No.
Not Lily.
A different voice.
Daniel.
I looked up.
He walked into the kitchen holding a coffee cup.
“Morning.””
I stared at him.
“What are you doing here?””
He smiled.
“I called you twice.””
“I didn’t see it.””
His eyes moved to the box.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The hesitation.
“What’s that?””
I closed my hand over the notebook.
“Nothing.””
Daniel studied me.
And then he smiled.
The same friendly smile I had trusted for years.
“Everything okay?””
I looked at the man who had been my friend.
The man Claire wrote about.
And for the first time in my life…
I wondered if I had ever really known him.
“Actually,” I said slowly.
“I was about to ask you the same thing.””
His smile faded.
Just slightly.
But enough.
And I knew.
Whatever Claire discovered before she died…
May you like
it wasn’t just about Vanessa.
It was about all of us.
