The Ticket That Wasn't Hers / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Document She Never Saw

I didn’t understand the screen at first.

Maybe because my brain refused to.

Maybe because the words didn’t make sense together.

My name.

My father’s account.

A request.

A document.

Something that wasn’t supposed to be touched.

“What is that?”” I asked.

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Vanessa looked nervous.

Really nervous.

Not annoyed.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

That was when I knew this was bigger.

“Marcus,” she said quietly.

He looked at her.

“What?””

“Don’t do this here.””

My father stared.

“Here?””

He looked around the room.

“At home?””

Then he pointed toward me.

“In front of my daughter?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I’m saying we should talk privately.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“No more private conversations where things disappear.””

The words hit Vanessa hard.

I watched her expression.

A flash of anger.

Then sadness.

Then something else.

Regret.

But I didn’t know if I believed it.

My father turned the phone toward me.

“This is from your school travel authorization.””

I blinked.

“My what?””

“The emergency contact and permission forms for next semester.””

I stared.

“What about them?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Someone requested changes.””

My heart sank.

“Changes to what?””

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“It wasn’t approved.””

I turned to her.

“You knew about this?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

“Vanessa.””

My voice was quiet.

But she heard the pain in it.

“You changed things about me without telling me?””

She shook her head.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

No answer.

Again.

Always no answer.

My father took a deep breath.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

The question sounded exhausted.

Not angry.

Just exhausted.

“Why are you making decisions about Maya behind my back?””

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time since this started, she looked like she didn’t have control anymore.

“I was trying to make things easier.””

“For who?””

She looked at him.

“For everyone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed toward me.

“You made things easier for yourself.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I have spent years trying to hold this family together.””

“And Maya?””

“She’s part of this family.””

“Then why does every decision you make push her away?””

The room went quiet.

I looked at the floor.

Because that was the question I had been afraid to ask.

Was I really part of the family?

Or was I just the person everyone expected to adjust?

Brielle suddenly stood.

“Mom, we need to tell him.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Brielle.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“We can’t keep doing this.””

My father turned.

“Doing what?””

Brielle looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words confused me.

“For what?””

She swallowed.

“For knowing.””

My chest tightened.

“Knowing what?””

Brielle looked at her mother.

Vanessa whispered:

“Don’t.””

But Brielle continued.

“I knew about the ticket change.””

I felt the room disappear.

“You knew?””

Brielle nodded.

“I thought you agreed.””

“You thought I agreed to lose my trip?””

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought you agreed because Mom told me you didn’t want to go.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“How many people did you tell that?””

Vanessa looked down.

Nobody answered.

My father closed his eyes.

Then he opened the airline app again.

He scrolled through the history.

And suddenly stopped.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”” Vanessa asked.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“There’s something missing.””

“What do you mean?””

He turned the phone.

“The original confirmation email.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“It should be here.””

He searched.

Nothing.

Then he checked another folder.

Still nothing.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Where is the original reservation?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“You booked this.””

“Yes.””

“So where is the confirmation?””

Silence.

My father’s eyes narrowed.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

A number he didn’t recognize.

He almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then he saw the message preview beneath it.

His face changed.

Because the message was from someone connected to the airline.

And it contained four words:

“We found the original passenger.””

Marcus answered the phone.

Nobody moved.

He listened.

His expression became colder with every second.

Then he looked directly at Vanessa.

“Who else knew about this?””

Vanessa went pale.

“Marcus…”

He slowly lowered the phone.

Because the person on the other end had just given him a name.

A name that changed everything.

And it wasn’t Maya.

May you like

It wasn’t Brielle.

It was someone Vanessa had never mentioned.
