Chapter 7: The Name On The Phone
My father stood completely still.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The phone was still pressed against his hand, but he wasn’t looking at it anymore.
He was looking at Vanessa.
Like he was seeing her for the first time.
“Who was it?”” I asked.
My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Dad?””
He looked at me quickly.
Then his expression softened.
“Maya, go sit down for a second.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because every time adults said something like that, it meant they knew something I didn’t.
“I’m tired of sitting down while everyone else decides things for me.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
My father looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
And immediately I felt guilty.
But I also knew it was true.
For weeks, maybe months, people had been making choices around me.
Not with me.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, this is getting out of control.””
He turned toward her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“It was out of control when someone started changing my daughter’s information.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You’re making assumptions.””
“I’m asking questions.””
“Like I’m guilty.””
Marcus stared at her.
“I don’t know what you are yet.””
That sentence changed the entire room.
Brielle looked between them.
“Dad?””
The word slipped out.
My father turned.
Because Brielle rarely called him that.
Not because she didn’t respect him.
Because she had always called him Marcus.
A small detail.
But suddenly it felt important.
“What did the person say?”” Brielle asked.
Marcus looked down at his phone.
“The airline representative said they found the original passenger record.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Original passenger?””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Marcus held her gaze.
“It makes perfect sense if someone replaced the information.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who was the original passenger?””
My father hesitated.
Then he answered.
“You.””
The room went silent.
I blinked.
“What?””
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
“What?””
Marcus looked at her.
“The airline said the original request was made under your name.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
My heart started pounding.
Because suddenly the ticket wasn’t just about me going on a vacation.
It was about Vanessa.
About something she had tried to hide.
“Why would your name be on my ticket?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
But she said it too quickly.
My father noticed.
“You know.””
“No, I don’t.””
“You do.””
Vanessa looked frustrated.
“I was trying to fix a problem.””
“What problem?””
She looked away.
Again.
That same silence.
The same hiding.
My father walked toward the table and placed the phone down.
“Everyone sits.””
Nobody moved.
“Now.””
Something about his voice made everyone listen.
Even Vanessa.
We sat around the living room.
The suitcase remained beside Brielle.
The same suitcase that started everything.
But now it felt like a symbol.
Not of a vacation.
Of everything nobody had told me.
My father leaned forward.
“Vanessa, I want the truth.””
She looked down.
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She rubbed her hands together.
“I was trying to make sure Brielle could come.””
Marcus stared.
“That’s not the mistake.””
Her eyes lifted.
He continued.
“The mistake was before that.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
My father looked at the phone.
“The airline said there was an original passenger attached to this reservation.””
“Yes.””
“And that passenger wasn’t Maya.””
I felt confused.
“But Dad, my name was on it.””
“After the change.””
My stomach dropped.
“What was it before?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Your mother.””
The room stopped.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“My mother?””
Nobody spoke.
My mother had passed away when I was young.
There weren’t many things I remembered about her.
A perfume bottle.
A song she used to hum.
The feeling of being held.
But her name still carried weight.
“Why would my mother be on the ticket?”” I whispered.
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I couldn’t understand.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
He nodded.
“Tell her.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Your mother and I…”
She stopped.
My father’s expression changed.
“Vanessa.””
“What?””
“You said you never knew about this.””
She froze.
That sentence hit differently.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
“Because your mother’s name should not have been connected to this trip.””
The room became colder.
“What are you saying?””
Before anyone could answer, Vanessa’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And immediately stood up.
“No.””
My father noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t respond.
“Vanessa.””
Her hand tightened around the phone.
Then she whispered:
“It’s him.””
My father stood.
“Who?””
She looked terrified.
And finally said the name.
A name I had never heard before.
May you like
A name that made my father’s face change.
Because Marcus knew exactly who it was.
