Chapter 14: The Daughter Nobody Claimed

For eighteen years, I had believed Catherine Hart was my biological mother.

She had raised me, held me when I was sick, taught me to sew, and kissed my forehead before I fell asleep.

She had been the voice that told me I could become anything I wanted.

Now I stood in a storage unit, holding a birth record that claimed she had never given birth to me at all.

My hands shook.

“Tell me this is a mistake.””

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

“I can't.””

“Then tell me what it means.””

She took a breath.

“Catherine discovered that Vanessa was pregnant with twins. She also discovered that Richard was manipulating the hospital records. But there was another pregnancy involved.””

I stared at the birth record.

“Mine?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Thomas was involved with Vanessa before Richard entered her life. Vanessa believed Thomas would marry her. When she became pregnant, he promised to provide for her and the child.””

I felt sick.

“But the record says Thomas was my father.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa was my mother.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Sophie and Lily.

They were watching me with stunned expressions.

“So I'm Vanessa's daughter, too?””

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“But not the way you think.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She opened the wooden trunk and removed another document.

It was a letter written by Catherine, dated three weeks before my birth.

Dear Eleanor,

Vanessa has made a decision that will change all our lives. She has agreed to surrender one of her children to Catherine's care, provided Richard believes the child is his. Thomas has agreed to sign the papers to protect the baby from the consequences of the financial dispute.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

I couldn't make the words fit together.

“Mom adopted me?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Catherine had been unable to have another child after a serious illness. She wanted to raise you, and Vanessa wanted a future with Richard. The arrangement was supposed to protect you from the scandal surrounding the company.””

“But why did she tell me I was her biological daughter?””

“She didn't. You were too young to understand the arrangement, and Richard insisted that the adoption remain private. Over time, the adults involved allowed the story to become the truth.””

I laughed, but it sounded like a sob.

“So the woman who raised me wasn't my mother, and the woman who gave birth to me tried to destroy my life.””

“Amelia—”

“No.””

I backed away.

“Don't tell me what to feel.””

Eleanor fell silent.

I looked down at the birth record.

Thomas Sinclair was listed as my biological father.

Vanessa Sinclair was listed as my biological mother.

Catherine Hart had signed the adoption papers.

And Richard Hart had signed as a witness.

Every adult who had shaped my life had known.

Every adult except me.

I thought about the silver paint running down my dress, Vanessa's cruel smile, and the years she had spent reminding me that I wasn't truly part of her family.

Now I understood why she had looked at me with such resentment.

I was living proof of the life she had sacrificed.

But understanding didn't make it hurt less.

“Did Mom know?”” I whispered.

Eleanor nodded.

“Catherine knew everything.””

“Did she ever regret taking me?””

“Never.””

I looked at the photograph in the trunk.

My mother had been laughing.

She looked happy.

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

“Because Richard threatened to expose the adoption and use it to challenge Catherine's ownership of the company. He claimed the trust required her biological child to be named as the primary beneficiary.””

I wiped my face.

“So she kept quiet to protect me.””

“And to protect you from Richard.””

I turned toward Sophie.

“Do you know what this means?””

She shook her head.

“It means we're all connected by a decision none of us made,” I said.

“And we've spent our lives paying for it.””

Lily approached me.

“Catherine was still your mother.””

I looked at her.

“She gave birth to neither of us, but she loved us both.””

Her voice trembled.

“That's what I keep thinking about. She chose us when everyone else was busy deciding what we were worth.””

I couldn't stop crying.

For the first time since discovering the envelope backstage, I let myself grieve.

Not for the mother I had lost.

For the years of doubt I had carried without knowing why.

For the lies that had turned love into a secret.

For the little girl who had grown up believing she needed to earn a place in a family that had never been allowed to tell her the truth.

Then Daniel called from the doorway.

“Amelia, you need to see this.””

He held a document beneath the overhead light.

It was a legal agreement bearing Richard's signature and the signatures of two trustees.

The agreement stated that if Catherine's adoption of me were ever challenged, her shares would revert to the original family trust.

But there was an additional clause.

One that had been crossed out and initialed by Catherine.

No beneficiary may inherit the company until all concealed financial obligations have been satisfied.

I frowned.

“What obligations?””

Daniel turned the page.

There was a schedule of payments attached to the agreement.

Every transfer Richard had made from the company was listed.

The final line showed the total amount owed.

*$2,840,000.*

Beneath the figure was a note in Catherine's handwriting.

This money belongs to the scholarship fund. It must be restored before ownership is decided.

I looked at Eleanor.

“She knew how much he'd stolen.””

“She knew the amount before she died.””

“Then why did she leave the shares to me?””

“Because she believed you'd use them to restore what had been taken.””

I stared at the document.

My mother hadn't left me a fortune.

She had left me a responsibility.

The company was not a prize.

It was a promise.

And I knew what I had to do.

“We need to recover the money.””

Daniel nodded.

“The authorities can freeze the remaining accounts, but the full amount may be difficult to recover.””

“Then we'll recover what we can and rebuild the fund.””

“You understand that could mean losing control of the company?””

I looked at the photographs of my mother.

“I don't care.””

Eleanor touched my shoulder.

“Catherine would be proud.””

Before I could answer, Sophie pulled another envelope from the trunk.

“This one has my name on it.””

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter from Thomas.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you in the way I intended. I allowed fear to make decisions that should have been yours.

I loved Vanessa, but I was not brave enough to fight for the life we might have had. When Richard offered to take care of the children, I believed him. I thought money and legal documents could protect you from the world.

I was wrong.

If you ever meet your sisters, tell them I am sorry.

Sophie pressed the letter against her chest.

“Did he know about all three of us?””

Eleanor nodded.

“He knew the truth about Amelia's birth. He knew about Vanessa's twins. He helped Catherine arrange the adoption.””

Sophie looked at me.

“Then we're not just sisters through a complicated family arrangement.””

“No,” I said softly.

“We're sisters because our parents made choices that connected our lives before any of us could speak.””

Lily hugged Sophie.

I joined them.

For one brief moment, the past seemed less like a trap and more like something we could finally face together.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He listened without speaking.

His face changed.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He ended the call.

“Richard has been released from custody.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

“His attorney secured temporary release pending formal charges. The police haven't yet obtained the medical evidence necessary to connect him to Catherine's death.””

“And the shooting?””

“Thomas has identified him, but Richard claims the weapon was planted. The investigators are working on the ballistics.””

I felt anger surge through me.

“He shot Thomas in front of us.””

“I know.””

“Then how can he walk free?””

“Because knowing what happened and proving it in court are two different things.””

I looked at the documents in the trunk.

The forged prescriptions.

The altered birth records.

The missing funds.

The false adoption agreements.

We had enough evidence to expose his crimes.

But we still didn't know the full truth about my mother's death.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“There is one more problem. Richard has filed an emergency petition to seize control of the company before the trust review is completed.””

“When is the hearing?””

“Tomorrow morning.””

I looked at my sisters.

Lily wiped her cheeks.

Sophie folded Thomas's letter and placed it in her pocket.

Eleanor closed the trunk.

“Then we need to be ready.””

I gathered the documents and slid them into my bag.

For eighteen years, Richard had controlled the story.

Tomorrow, he would have to answer for it.

And if the judge accepted the evidence, the company would no longer belong to the man who had stolen it.

It would belong to the people my mother had fought to protect.

But as we left the storage unit, I noticed something tucked beneath the photograph in the trunk.

A small white card.

On it was a handwritten message from Catherine.

Amelia, if you ever learn who gave birth to you, remember this: the truth may change your name, but it cannot change who loved you.

I held it against my chest.

For the first time that day, I could breathe.

My biological mother was Vanessa.

My biological father was Thomas.

May you like

But the woman who had raised me, loved me, and fought to protect me was still my mother.

And tomorrow, I would make sure her name was cleared.
