Chapter 8: The Girl Behind the Locked Door

The design house looked different when we returned.

The front door stood open, and the brass bell above it swung gently in the breeze. A box of fabric samples had been overturned in the hallway. Papers covered the floor.

Someone had searched the building.

"Stay behind me," Daniel said.

I ignored him and ran toward the staircase.

"Lily!""

A faint thud sounded from below.

Then a woman's voice called, "Amelia?""

I hurried down the stairs.

The hidden room beneath the cabinet was open. Its door hung crookedly from one hinge, and the shelves had been emptied onto the floor.

A young woman stood beside the desk.

She had dark hair, pale skin, and eyes the same shade of green as Vanessa's.

But she didn't look like Vanessa.

She looked frightened.

She wore jeans, a gray sweater, and a canvas backpack. A small cut marked her forehead, and she was clutching a leather notebook against her chest.

"Are you Lily?"" I asked.

She nodded.

"I think so.""

"What do you mean, you think so?""

She swallowed.

"My adoptive parents told me my birth mother was a woman named Vanessa Sinclair. They said she gave me up because she couldn't care for me.""

"That's what everyone believed.""

Lily looked toward the shelves.

"Then why did I find my name in a trust agreement belonging to Catherine Hart?""

I stepped closer.

"Because my mother protected you.""

Lily stared at me.

"Your mother?""

I nodded.

"She helped arrange your adoption.""

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"She knew I existed?""

"Yes.""

"Did she ever try to find me?""

I thought of the letter, the hidden room, the cassette, and the blue ribbon.

"She never stopped looking out for you.""

Lily covered her mouth.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she held out the leather notebook.

"I found this behind the cabinet. Someone tried to take it, but I hid it beneath my jacket.""

I opened it.

The first pages contained sketches of gowns, measurements, and fabric samples. My mother's handwriting filled the margins.

Then I reached a page marked with a red line.

*ORIGINAL SHAREHOLDER AGREEMENT — OCTOBER 14*

Beneath it was a list of names.

Catherine Lane.

Eleanor Whitmore.

Richard Hart.

Vanessa Sinclair.

And beside Vanessa's name, my mother had written three words.

Unauthorized transfer confirmed.

I looked at Lily.

"Did you read the rest?""

"Some of it.""

She turned the page.

A photograph had been taped to the paper.

It showed a younger Vanessa holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Richard.

My father was holding an envelope.

On the back, my mother's handwriting read:

The night Richard promised Vanessa that their daughter would inherit everything.

I felt sick.

"Where did you find this?""

"In a metal box behind the desk. There was a letter, too, but someone tore part of it.""

She handed me the remaining fragment.

I read the surviving lines.

Richard believes the child is the key to the transfer. He doesn't understand that the original shares cannot be sold without the signatures of both beneficiaries.

I looked at Lily.

"Both beneficiaries?""

She nodded slowly.

"That's what I thought it meant.""

Before I could respond, Daniel entered the room.

He stopped when he saw Lily.

"Miss Sinclair?""

She backed away.

"How do you know my name?""

"Your adoption records were included in the preliminary trust review.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because the trustees hadn't verified your identity.""

Lily laughed without humor.

"Everyone keeps saying that. Verify. Review.

Confirm. Meanwhile, people have been searching this building and threatening me.""

Daniel looked at the broken door.

"Did you see who came here?""

"No.""

"Did they take anything?""

Lily held the notebook tighter.

"They tried to take this.""

Daniel extended his hand.

"I need to examine it.""

"No.""

"Miss Sinclair, if those records are authentic, they could be crucial evidence.""

"Then you can examine them with a witness present.""

I almost smiled.

She was terrified, but she wasn't foolish.

Daniel withdrew his hand.

"Fair enough.""

I studied him.

"Why did you tell me not to trust you?""

He looked at me.

"I didn't.""

"Someone sent me a message saying that.""

"Then someone wants you to suspect me.""

"Maybe you do.""

He took a breath.

"Amelia, I was assigned to review the estate because the trustees received an anonymous complaint about irregular transfers. I didn't know your mother personally. I didn't know Lily existed until this morning. And I have no financial interest in the outcome.""

"Then who does?""

Daniel glanced at the notebook.

"Your father. Vanessa. Possibly Eleanor. And now Lily.""

Lily stiffened.

"Why me?""

"Because the trust names you as a contingent beneficiary. If Catherine's original shares were transferred unlawfully, your claim could change who controls the company.""

"But I don't want a company," Lily said.

"I just want to know why my birth mother abandoned me.""

Her voice broke on the final word.

I reached for her hand.

"Maybe she didn't abandon you in the way you were told.""

Lily looked at me.

"Do you hate her?""

I thought about Vanessa's laugh when she'd ruined my dress.

The way she'd grabbed my wrist.

The way she'd looked at the trust agreement as if it were a threat to her life.

"I don't know what I feel about her," I admitted.

"But I know you didn't deserve to grow up without answers.""

Lily squeezed my hand.

For a moment, we were simply two young women standing in a room full of secrets, trying to understand why adults had made decisions that shaped our entire lives.

Then Daniel noticed something beneath the desk.

A small envelope had been taped to the underside of a drawer.

He carefully removed it.

My name was written on the front.

Lily's name appeared beneath mine.

We opened it together.

Inside was a letter dated two days before my mother's death.

My girls,

If you have found this letter, then the people who tried to separate you have finally failed.

I stopped reading.

My girls.

Not my daughter.

My girls.

I looked at Lily.

She was crying silently.

I continued.

I cannot promise that you will understand everything I did. I made mistakes, and I trusted people who did not deserve it. But I need you to know that I never considered either of you a burden.

Amelia, you were the light of my life.

Lily, I never held you in my arms, but I loved you from the moment I knew you existed.

My vision blurred.

The letter continued.

There is one final truth you must uncover. The money was never the real prize. The company was never the real prize.

Richard believes the original shares will make him powerful. Vanessa believes they will make her untouchable.

Both are wrong.

The shares are tied to a separate document. Whoever possesses it will learn why the company was created in the first place.

The letter ended with a location.

*THE OLD RAILWAY STATION. PLATFORM FOUR. LOCKER 117.*

I read it twice.

Lily looked at Daniel.

"What's at the station?""

"I don't know," he said.

"Then why would Catherine leave instructions to go there?""

Daniel studied the paper.

"Because she wanted someone to find something.""

I folded the letter.

"Then we're going.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not without informing the police.""

"We can do both.""

He looked toward the staircase.

"Amelia, your father knows we're here. If he realizes we've found this letter, he'll move quickly.""

"Then we need to move faster.""

Lily picked up her backpack.

"I'm coming.""

I looked at her.

"You don't have to.""

"Yes, I do."" She wiped her cheeks.

"I've spent eighteen years being told my story was already written. I'm done letting other people decide what I deserve to know.""

We left the design house together.

At the front entrance, I glanced back at the windows.

For the first time, I felt as if my mother had left more than evidence behind.

She had left us a path.

And somewhere along that path was the truth about the company, the money, and the people who had tried to keep us apart.

But as we reached the car, my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A single message appeared.

*If you go to Platform Four, Lily will learn why Vanessa really gave her away.*

A second message followed.

*And you will learn what your mother did to keep you alive.*

I looked at Lily.

She had received the same message.

Her face was drained of color.

"Amelia," she whispered, "what if our mother wasn't the only person who lied?""

Before I could answer, a black sedan turned onto the street.

It slowed beside us.

The rear window lowered.

Vanessa looked out.

"Get in the car," she ordered Lily.

Lily froze.

Vanessa's expression softened, but the effect was somehow more frightening than her anger.

"Please, sweetheart. We need to talk.""

Lily stared at her.

For eighteen years, Vanessa had been a stranger who existed only in adoption records and whispered questions.

May you like

Now she was standing a few feet away.

And she was looking at Lily as if she were the one person in the world Vanessa couldn't afford to lose.
