Chapter 6: The Baby Nobody Mentioned
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Renee stood in front of the hospital entrance wearing a pale-blue sweater, her hair pulled back, and one hand resting protectively against her stomach. Beside her, Vanessa looked younger, thinner, and strangely familiar.
The date on the back was unmistakable.
The day Lily was born.
Marcus looked from the photograph to Vanessa.
“What does this mean?””
Vanessa's lips parted.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
Denise stepped inside and closed the door.
“Marcus, perhaps we should sit down.””
He didn't move.
“Mom, you knew about this photograph?””
“No. I found the envelope in the jewelry box less than an hour ago.””
“Why didn't you bring it to me immediately?””
Denise glanced at Vanessa.
“Because I was afraid of what it might mean.””
Marcus turned back to his fiancée.
“You said you met Renee at work years ago.””
“We did.””
“Were you at the hospital when Lily was born?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Renee asked me to be there.””
Marcus felt a sharp ache in his chest.
He remembered the night Lily was born. Renee had gone into labor several weeks early, and he had rushed her to the hospital in a panic. He remembered nurses moving quickly, the bright lights, the smell of antiseptic, and the overwhelming relief when someone finally placed his daughter in his arms.
He remembered Renee smiling weakly.
He remembered promising their newborn that he would always protect her.
But he also remembered something else.
For nearly an hour before Lily was born, Renee had insisted on speaking privately with a nurse. She had refused to explain why.
Marcus had assumed she was frightened.
He had been too overwhelmed to ask again.
“Why would she need you there?”” he asked Vanessa.
Vanessa looked down at the photograph.
“Because I was the only person she trusted with something she couldn't tell you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You keep saying that. What couldn't she tell me?””
Vanessa pressed her hands together.
“Renee and I had known each other since we were twenty-four. We weren't close at first, but we became friends when we worked at the same company.””
“You told me you barely knew her.””
“I was afraid you'd ask questions.””
“About what?””
Vanessa drew a trembling breath.
“Before you met Renee, I was pregnant.””
The room went silent.
Marcus stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“I lost the baby.””
Denise covered her mouth.
Marcus felt the words land heavily, but he couldn't understand their connection to Renee or Lily.
“I'm sorry that happened to you,” he said slowly.
“But what does that have to do with my wife?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“Renee was with me when I found out. She took me to the hospital. She stayed with me afterward.””
“Why would she hide that from me?””
“Because it wasn't your story to know.””
Marcus recoiled slightly.
“You're telling me my wife hid a pregnancy loss from me for the sake of protecting your privacy?””
“No,” Vanessa whispered.
“I'm telling you that's where everything began.””
She rose from the chair and walked toward the cream curtain.
Sunlight illuminated the tears on her cheeks.
“After I lost the baby, I couldn't bear seeing other people start families. I hated myself for feeling that way, so I stopped talking about it. Renee was the only person who didn't judge me.””
Marcus listened without speaking.
“When she became pregnant with Lily, I was happy for her,” Vanessa continued.
“At least, I wanted to be. I helped her buy clothes, painted a little dresser, and went to appointments when you couldn't.””
Marcus frowned.
“I went to every appointment I could.””
“I know. You loved her. But there were days when Renee needed someone who understood what she was afraid of.””
“What was she afraid of?””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“That she wouldn't survive the birth.””
Marcus felt his throat tighten.
Renee had experienced complications during pregnancy. Her doctors had monitored her closely, but no one had suggested she was in immediate danger.
He remembered her asking him to promise that Lily would always know how deeply she was loved.
He had thought it was ordinary anxiety.
“Why didn't she tell me she was afraid?””
“She didn't want you to panic.””
Marcus looked down at the photograph again.
It was a reasonable explanation, but it didn't explain the warning recordings, the note, or the missing envelope.
“Then what happened at the hospital?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Renee asked me to make a promise.””
“What promise?””
“That if anything happened to her, I would help you raise Lily.””
Marcus's anger surged.
“You thought the best way to honor that promise was to frighten my daughter?””
“No!””
“You told her that her mother didn't want her!””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know what I said was cruel.””
“Cruel?””
“I was frustrated. I was scared. I didn't know how to make her accept me.””
“She's seven years old. She doesn't have to accept you on your schedule!””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that no explanation would excuse what she'd done.
“I know,” she whispered.
Marcus placed the photograph on the table.
“Why did Renee warn me about you?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
The grief in her eyes gave way to fear.
“Because of what happened after Lily was born.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa glanced at Denise.
Denise shook her head slowly.
“Vanessa, tell him the truth.””
Vanessa stared at the floor.
“Renee discovered that I had been keeping something from her.””
“What?””
“Something about the night she died.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You already told me you visited her that night.””
“I did.””
“And you said she was alive when you left.””
“She was.””
“Then why did you hide it?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Because she asked me not to tell you what she had found.””
Marcus's hands began to shake.
“What had she found?””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“A second birth certificate.””
Marcus blinked.
“Whose?””
“Lily's.””
“That makes no sense. We have her birth certificate.””
“Not the original one.””
Denise stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“When Lily was born, the hospital issued a temporary record. A few weeks later, Renee requested a corrected copy. She told me the first one had a mistake.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What mistake?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never saw the corrected certificate. Renee kept it locked away.””
“Then how do you know it exists?””
“Because she showed me the envelope the night before she died.””
Marcus felt the room closing around him.
“What did it say?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“I don't know. I only saw the front page. But Renee told me that if the truth ever came out, it would destroy the family she'd spent years trying to protect.””
Denise sank into a chair.
“No,” she whispered.
“That can't be right.””
Marcus turned toward his mother.
“What do you know?””
Denise shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I was there when Lily was born. I saw my granddaughter. I held her. I know who her parents are.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Then you should have no reason to be afraid of the document.””
Denise's face went white.
Marcus noticed.
“Mom?””
She couldn't meet his eyes.
“Marcus, there's something I never told you about the day Lily was born.””
He stepped toward her.
“What?””
Denise reached into her handbag and removed a small folded hospital document.
“I found this among the papers your father left behind. I kept it because I didn't understand why Renee had asked him to sign it.””
Marcus took the paper.
At the top was the hospital's name.
Below it was a date, a patient number, and a handwritten note.
He read it once.
Then again.
The words blurred before his eyes.
*Paternity verification requested. Results to be delivered directly to Renee Carter.*
Marcus looked up slowly.
“Why would my wife request a paternity test for our daughter?””
Denise began to cry.

Vanessa closed her eyes.
And somewhere beyond the curtain, the wedding music finally stopped.
