Chapter 1: The Graduation Night Secret
The first person I saw crying on graduation night was not my mother, my sister, or even myself. It was my best friend, Ava, shaking in a girls’ restroom while holding a secret that could destroy the future I thought I was about to celebrate.
I had spent four years imagining that moment.
The cap.
The gown.
The photographs.
The feeling of finally making it.
But I never imagined walking into a restroom and finding the person I trusted most holding the one thing that could break my entire world apart.
I pushed open the restroom door because I heard someone crying.
Not the quiet kind.
The kind where someone was trying desperately to breathe without making a sound.
“Ava?”” I called.
The bright graduation venue lights spilled into the restroom behind me. Everything looked too clean, too perfect. White marble sinks.
Gold-framed mirrors. Fresh flowers near the entrance. A place designed for proud parents to take pictures and graduates to fix their hair before walking across the stage.
Not a place where someone’s life fell apart.
Ava stood near the sink, still wearing her navy graduation gown. Her curls were slightly messy, and her mascara had streaked down her cheeks. Her hands trembled so badly that the small plastic object between her fingers almost slipped.
She looked at me like she had been waiting for someone to save her.
But she also looked like she was afraid of what saving her would cost.
“Maya…” Ava whispered.
I walked closer.
“What happened? Are you hurt?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then why are you crying like this?””
Her lips parted, but no words came out.
For a moment, the only sound was the distant applause from the auditorium.
Hundreds of people were celebrating.
Hundreds of people were smiling.
And in that restroom, my best friend looked like she had just watched her entire future disappear.
“Ava, talk to me,” I said softly.
“You’re scaring me.””
She looked down at her hands.
Then she finally spoke.
“I didn’t know who else to tell.””
My stomach tightened.
There was something about the way she said it.
Not like she needed advice.
Like she needed forgiveness.
“Ava, whatever it is, we’ll figure it out.””
Her eyes filled with tears again.
“I don’t think you understand.””
She slowly turned the object in her hand toward me.
My eyes dropped.
A pregnancy test.
Positive.
For a second, my brain refused to understand what I was seeing.
The word sat there in bright letters.
Positive.
A tiny line.
A tiny piece of plastic.
Something that could change everything.
“Ava…” I whispered.
She covered her mouth as a sob escaped.
“I just found out.””
I stared at her.
Then I did the only thing I could do.
I stepped forward and hugged her.
She collapsed against me immediately.
“We’ll figure this out,” I said.
My voice sounded calmer than I felt.
“We’ll figure this out, okay?””
Ava cried harder.
“I’m sorry.””
“Sorry for what?””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
I pulled back slightly and held her shoulders.
“Ava, look at me.””
She avoided my eyes.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, she did.
“You’re my best friend. We’re not going to stand here and panic. We’re going to breathe, and then we’re going to talk.””
She nodded, but she looked terrified.
Like there was another part of the story she couldn’t force herself to say.
I opened my mouth to ask her what she was hiding.
Then my phone vibrated.
The sound cut through the room.
I glanced down.
A message.
From Marcus.
My fiancé.
*WHERE ARE YOU? WE NEED TO TALK.*
My smile disappeared.
Not because of the message itself.
Because of Ava’s reaction.
The second she saw his name on my screen, all color drained from her face.
Her fingers tightened around my arm.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“No what?””
Her breathing became faster.
“Maya…”
“What?””
She looked toward the restroom door like she expected someone to walk through it.
“Don’t let him see me.””
The words hit harder than they should have.
I stared at her.
“Marcus?””
She didn’t answer.
“Ava, why are you scared of Marcus?””
Her eyes moved away.
That was the moment something inside me shifted.
Because Ava had known Marcus almost as long as I had.
She was there when he proposed.
She helped me choose my engagement dress.
She cried when I told her we were finally planning our wedding.
She was the person I trusted when I said, “I found the man I want to spend my life with.””
So why did she look like she was hiding from him?
“Ava,” I said slowly, “what is going on?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I looked around the restroom.
Her graduation gown was hanging loosely around her shoulders. Her purse sat on the counter beside her.
And then I noticed something.
Something silver.
Something familiar.
At first, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.
I stepped closer.
Beside Ava’s purse was a silver wristwatch.
My heart stopped.
I knew that watch.
I had bought it six months earlier.
I remembered standing in the jewelry store, choosing between three different designs because I wanted the gift to mean something.
Marcus always said he didn’t care about expensive things.
He said memories mattered more.
So I engraved a small message on the back.
*Forever starts with us.*
He wore it every day.
Every single day.
Until tonight.
I slowly picked it up.
My fingers went cold.
“Ava…”
She looked at me.
“Why do you have his watch?””
The silence afterward was louder than any scream.
Her face crumpled.
“I can explain.””
My chest tightened.
“Explain what?””
“Maya, please.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No, don’t say please. Just answer me.””
The restroom suddenly felt smaller.
The bright lights felt too harsh.
The beautiful graduation night I had imagined all year was disappearing piece by piece.
“Ava, why is Marcus’s watch in your purse?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””
Those words.
Those exact words.
They felt like a confession.
“What didn’t you mean to happen?””
She wiped her tears.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I stepped backward.
The worst part wasn’t the watch.
It wasn’t even the pregnancy test.
It was the way she said those words like she already knew she had.
My phone vibrated again.
Another message from Marcus.
*I’M COMING TO FIND YOU.*
Ava saw the screen.
Her eyes widened.
“Maya…”
“What?””
“He can’t see me.””
“Why?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
I felt my heartbeat pounding in my ears.
“No.””
Ava reached for my hand.
“Maya, please listen to me.””
But before she could explain, the restroom door handle moved.
Both of us froze.
Slowly, the door opened.
A tall figure stood in the doorway.
Marcus.
Still dressed for graduation night.
His formal clothes fit perfectly against his massive frame. His bald head reflected the bright restroom lights, and his expression changed the second his eyes landed on Ava.
Then his gaze moved to the silver watch in my hand.
For one long second, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus quietly said my name.
“Maya…”
And the way he said it told me one thing.
May you like
He wasn’t surprised.
He was caught.
