Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Silence
I wish I could say I walked away after Marcus said those words.
I wish I could say I slammed the door, blocked their numbers, and never looked back.
That would have been easier.
But life doesn’t work like the stories people tell online.
Sometimes the person who hurts you is also the person holding the answer you desperately need.
I stood there, frozen.
“The baby might not be yours?””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Marcus looked down.
Ava looked like she wanted the floor to open and swallow her.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then I laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because my mind couldn’t process how many pieces of my life had shattered in less than ten minutes.
“So let me understand this.””
I looked at Marcus.
“You cheated on me.””
He nodded once.
“You got my best friend pregnant.””
His eyes closed.
“And now you’re telling me you might not even know if it’s your baby?””
“Maya…”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
My fingers were shaking.
“No more excuses. No more half-truths. I want every single answer.””
Marcus looked at Ava.
That was the part I hated most.
Even now, they still had conversations without words.
“Ava,” I said.
She looked at me.
“You said you would tell me the truth.””
She nodded slowly.
“I will.””
“Then start.””
She swallowed hard.
“Marcus and I started talking last fall.””
I stared at her.
“Last fall?””
“Yes.””
“That was when my father was sick.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“You know?””
My voice cracked.
“You knew I was spending every night at the hospital. You knew I was terrified. You knew I was barely sleeping.””
“I know.””
“And while I was sitting beside my father’s bed, you were talking to him?””
Ava started crying.
“I didn’t mean for it to become what it became.””
I shook my head.
“That sentence doesn’t make sense.””
“What?””
“You don’t accidentally destroy someone’s life for months.””
The words hit her.
She looked away.
Marcus stepped forward.
“I was wrong.””
I looked at him.
“You keep saying that like admitting it changes anything.””
“It doesn’t.””
“Then why say it?””
He had no answer.
The confidence I had always admired in him was gone.
The man who used to walk into any room like he belonged there was now standing in a restroom, unable to defend himself.
But I wasn’t ready to forgive him just because he looked sorry.
Regret after being caught was not the same thing as loyalty.
I turned back to Ava.
“When did you find out you were pregnant?””
“Three days ago.””
My eyebrows lifted.
“Three days?””
She nodded.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I wanted to.””
“But you didn’t.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Marcus.
That answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
I noticed.
“What are you afraid of?””
Ava wiped her face.
“I was afraid everything would fall apart.””
I stared at her.
“Ava, everything already fell apart.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
A notification sound interrupted us.
Everyone looked at my phone.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But then I saw the preview.
*You need to know what happened before you blame the wrong person.*
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Marcus.
Then Ava.
Neither of them looked surprised.
That scared me.
“Who is this?””
Nobody answered.
I held up the phone.
“Who sent this?””
Marcus’s face changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
But I saw it.
“Marcus?””
He looked away.
“You know?””
“I…”
My anger returned instantly.
“You know who this is?””
“Maya, please.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“How many secrets are there?””
He rubbed his hand over his face.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
“I mean…”
His voice lowered.
“There are things you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at Ava.
She shook her head.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“You promised.””
That single sentence changed the entire room.
I looked between them.
“Promised what?””
Neither answered.
“Promised what?””
Ava covered her mouth.
Marcus looked like he had just realized he had said too much.
And that was when I understood something.
The affair wasn’t the whole story.
It was only the first layer.
I grabbed my purse.
“I’m leaving.””
“Maya,” Marcus said.
I stopped.
“What?””
His face softened.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I said something I never thought I would say to the man I planned to marry.
“You didn’t have to want to.””
Silence.
“You did it anyway.””
I walked toward the door.
But before my hand touched the handle, Ava spoke.
“Maya.””
I stopped.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“I need to show you something.””
I didn’t turn around.
“No.””
“Please.””
I closed my eyes.
That word again.
Please.
The same word people used when they wanted another chance after taking away yours.
“I’m done hearing things that should have been told to me months ago.””
“Maya, please.””
I finally turned.
Ava reached into her purse.
Not for the pregnancy test.
Not for her phone.
For an envelope.
A small white envelope with my name written on it.
My name.
In Marcus’s handwriting.
My heartbeat changed.
“What is that?””
Ava looked at Marcus.
He immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t what?””
His face went pale.
“Ava, don’t give her that.””
My fingers went cold.
Because whatever was inside that envelope…
Marcus didn’t want me to see it.
I walked back.
Slowly.
“Give it to me.””
Ava hesitated.
“Maya…”
“Give it to me.””
She handed me the envelope.
It felt heavier than paper should feel.
I opened it.
Inside was a printed photograph.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was looking at.
Then my breath disappeared.
It was Marcus.
But not with Ava.
With someone else.
A woman I didn’t recognize.
They were standing outside a hotel.
Holding hands.
My hands started trembling.
“What is this?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
I looked at Ava.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“When was this taken?””
Her lips moved.
No sound came out.
“WHEN?””
“Six months ago.””
Six months.
The same month Marcus and I celebrated our anniversary.
The same month he told me I was the only person he wanted.
I looked at him.
“How many people were there?””
“Maya…”
“How many?””
He was silent.
And silence had become the only language he knew.
I felt tears burning my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.
Not there.
Not in front of them.
I had cried enough for people who didn’t protect my heart.
The restroom door opened again.
This time, it wasn’t a stranger.
It was a woman in a black graduation dress standing outside.
She looked directly at Marcus.
Then at me.
Her expression was filled with guilt.
“Maya?””
I froze.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at her.
“Do I know you?””
She took a shaky breath.
“No.””
Then she looked at Marcus.
“But you need to know the truth.””
Marcus whispered her name.
“Rachel.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
And then she said the sentence that made Ava cover her mouth in shock.
“I’m the reason Marcus and Ava stopped talking.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Because Ava found out Marcus was never only with her.””
The room went silent.
May you like
And then Rachel added:
“He was seeing me too.””
