Chapter 2: The Little Girl With the Secret

I pushed through the crowd, trying not to attract attention.

“Lily, sweetheart, wait!””

She turned briefly, her small face pale beneath the ballroom lights.

“Mommy, I have to do this.””

“Do what? Where did that drive come from?””

She reached the DJ booth before I could catch up.

The DJ, a cheerful Black man wearing a fitted burgundy jacket, leaned down to hear her over the music.

“Hey, little lady. You lost?””

“No, sir,” Lily said.

“I need you to play something.””

He glanced at the flash drive.

“Is this the wedding slideshow?””

Lily nodded.

“Something like that.””

I reached them, breathless.

“I'm sorry,” I told the DJ.

“My daughter shouldn't be bothering you.””

But Lily caught my wrist.

“Mommy, please. You said the truth matters.””

I looked into her eyes.

She wasn't playing a game. She wasn't trying to embarrass her aunt because of the insult earlier.

She was terrified.

And beneath that fear was a determination I had never seen in her before.

“What is on that drive?”” I asked quietly.

Lily swallowed.

“Proof that Aunt Vanessa hurt you.””

My chest tightened.

Before I could respond, a familiar voice rang out from behind us.

“Claire? What exactly is your daughter doing?””

Vanessa approached with her gown gathered in one hand, her smile fixed in place. Patricia followed close behind.

Vanessa's eyes landed on the flash drive.

For a fraction of a second, her expression changed.

The smile disappeared. Her lips parted. Her fingers clenched around the silk of her gown.

Then she lunged toward the booth.

“Give me that!””

The DJ stepped back.

“Ma'am, what's going on?””

“That's private property,” Vanessa snapped.

“My niece stole it from my dressing room.””

“I didn't steal anything,” Lily said.

Patricia grabbed my arm.

“Claire, control your child before she ruins this wedding.””

I pulled free.

“Don't touch me.””

My mother's eyes widened as though I had slapped her.

Vanessa turned toward the guests gathering nearby.

“Everyone, I'm so sorry. My sister has been unstable since her divorce. I should have known she'd find a way to make today about her.””

The old familiar humiliation swept through me.

For years, Vanessa had used my divorce as a weapon. She knew people would believe the polished bride over the woman who had struggled to rebuild her life.

But this time, I noticed something different.

She wasn't looking at me anymore.

She was staring at the flash drive as if it were a loaded gun.

“Please,” Lily whispered to the DJ.

“Just play it.””

The DJ looked from Lily to Vanessa.

“Do you have permission to access these files?””

“I don't know,” he admitted.

Vanessa seized the edge of his equipment table.

“Turn it off before I have security remove you.””

That was when Alexander appeared.

“What is happening?””

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

“Darling, Claire's daughter has stolen something from me.””

Alexander looked at Lily.

“Is that true?””

“No, sir.””

“Then why does Vanessa say you stole it?””

“Because she doesn't want anyone to see what's on it.””

A murmur passed through the surrounding guests.

Alexander lowered his champagne glass.

“Vanessa, what is on the drive?””

“Nothing important. Old personal videos. Claire has always been jealous of me, and now she's using her daughter to embarrass me.””

“Then why are you afraid to let us see them?”” I asked.

Vanessa spun toward me.

“Because they're mine!””

Her voice cracked across the ballroom.

The music continued for another two seconds before the DJ abruptly lowered the volume.

Alexander studied his bride.

“Vanessa, you told me you had nothing to hide.””

“I don't!””

“Then let the DJ check the files.””

She stepped between Alexander and the booth.

“No.””

One word.

But it changed the atmosphere.

Alexander's expression hardened.

“Move, Vanessa.””

She stared at him as though she couldn't believe he had spoken to her that way.

Then, slowly, she stepped aside.

The DJ connected the flash drive to his laptop.

A loading symbol appeared on the giant screen above the dance floor.

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

Patricia grabbed her daughter's hand.

“Tell them to stop this,” she whispered.

Vanessa leaned close to her mother.

“If that file plays, we're finished.””

I heard her.

So did Alexander.

His face drained of color.

“What file?”” he asked.

Neither woman answered.

The screen flickered.

A private video appeared, showing Vanessa seated in an expensive restaurant opposite an unidentified man. The image was clear enough to reveal the diamond bracelet on her wrist and the distinctive scar near her left eyebrow.

Then her recorded voice filled the ballroom.

“Once we're married, I control the foundation.””

Alexander went perfectly still.

Vanessa dropped her champagne glass.

It shattered against the polished floor.

“TURN IT OFF!””

May you like

But the recording continued.

And the next sentence made my mother stagger backward.
