Chapter 9: The Secret Beneath the Roses

We reached Patricia's house shortly after midnight.

The drive from the ballroom had been filled with clipped phone calls, whispered arguments, and the low rumble of tires on wet pavement. Alexander had arranged for two security officers to accompany us, while Eleanor insisted on coming herself.

Daniel sat in the back seat, staring through the window.

I kept Lily beside me, wrapped in a borrowed cardigan over her pale-blue dress. She had fallen asleep against my shoulder before we reached the highway, exhausted by the evening's revelations.

I watched her peaceful face and wondered how many adults had decided her future without ever considering what she might need.

Patricia's house stood behind tall iron gates in an expensive neighborhood lined with oak trees. The lights were on inside.

“She knew we were coming,” Alexander said.

Eleanor looked toward the upper windows.

“Of course she did.””

One of the security officers approached the front door and knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

The door opened slowly.

Patricia stood inside, still wearing her emerald gown, but without her jewelry. Her eyes were red, and her hair had begun to come loose from its elegant arrangement.

“I assume you've come to arrest me,” she said.

“No one is here to arrest you tonight,” Alexander replied.

“We're here for the original trust declaration.””

Patricia laughed without humor.

“Then you've wasted your time.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You told me the document was in the storage room.””

“It was.””

“Where is it now?””

“Gone.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You promised me you hadn't destroyed it.””

“I changed my mind.””

Eleanor entered the house without waiting for an invitation.

“Where is it, Patricia?””

My mother looked at her.

“You have no right to come into my home.””

“I have every right to recover a document you obtained through fraud.””

Patricia shut the door.

“You think you're the hero in this story because you disappeared and came back wearing an expensive suit?””

Eleanor remained calm.

“No. I think I failed my son by allowing fear to keep me away. But I won't let you use my failure to justify yours.””

Patricia's expression twisted.

“You had everything. A wealthy husband, a beautiful son, a name that opened every door. I had to beg for money to keep my daughters fed.””

“You received money from Richard.””

“And what was it worth? He wouldn't acknowledge Vanessa publicly. He treated her like a shameful secret. Every year, I had to watch him give Alexander opportunities Vanessa could only dream about.””

“Alexander wasn't responsible for that.””

“No, but he benefited from it!””

Patricia's voice broke.

“And when I finally realized there was enough money to secure both my daughters' futures, I decided to take it.””

I felt Lily stirring in my arms.

“Grandma,” she murmured sleepily.

Patricia looked at her granddaughter.

Something shifted in her face.

For one second, I thought she might finally apologize.

Instead, she said, “If your mother had stayed quiet, none of this would have happened.””

I tightened my arms around Lily.

“Don't you dare blame her.””

“I am telling the truth!””

“No. You're telling yourself a story in which every terrible thing you did was someone else's fault.””

Patricia turned away.

Alexander motioned toward the security officers.

“Search the storage room.””

Patricia stepped in front of the hallway.

“You can't.””

“Move.””

“Alexander, please. You don't know what you're about to uncover.””

He looked at her steadily.

“Then tell me.””

She stared at him, her mouth trembling.

Finally, she moved aside.

The storage room was at the back of the house, behind a door covered in faded wallpaper. Inside were boxes of old photographs, holiday decorations, and documents stacked in plastic containers.

Daniel went straight to a metal cabinet.

“The declaration was here.””

He pulled open the bottom drawer.

It was empty.

He cursed under his breath.

Eleanor began examining the shelves.

“Richard used to say that important things should never be hidden where people expect to find them.””

I looked around the room.

A faded arrangement of artificial white roses sat in a ceramic vase on a high shelf. Dust covered everything except the vase's base.

I remembered the letter I had received nine years earlier.

Protect your daughter and look beneath the roses.

My heart began racing.

“Eleanor,” I whispered.

“What did Richard mean when he said that?””

She followed my gaze to the vase.

“Richard kept a rose garden at his old estate. He believed roses reminded people that beauty could grow around thorns.””

I carefully lifted the vase.

Beneath it lay a small brass key.

Daniel stared at it.

“That's the key to the garden safe.””

Patricia lunged toward me.

“Give it to me!””

Alexander caught her arm.

“Don't.””

She struggled against him.

“You have no idea what that key opens!””

I held it tightly.

“Then tell us.””

Patricia stopped struggling.

Her face crumpled.

“It opens the box that proves I never meant to hurt you.””

I stared at her.

“Then why are you trying so hard to keep it hidden?””

She had no answer.

Eleanor took the key and examined its worn edges.

“The garden safe is at Richard's old estate. It was sealed after his death.””

Alexander looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this?””

Daniel nodded.

“I knew there was a safe. I didn't know what was inside.””

“Why didn't you tell us?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“That's always your answer,” I said.

He looked down.

“I know.””

We left Patricia's house with the key and a folder of financial records that Daniel had hidden behind the cabinet. The documents connected Patricia, Vanessa, and Daniel to the transfers, but they didn't explain the most troubling question.

Why had Patricia been so desperate to destroy the original trust declaration?

By the time we reached Richard's old estate, the rain had stopped.

The house stood empty behind an overgrown garden. White roses climbed the stone walls, their petals silvered by moonlight. A narrow path led toward a glass conservatory at the back of the property.

Alexander unlocked the side door.

“Mother, you said the safe was here?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Richard kept it beneath the rose garden's original stone bench.””

We found it under a loose slab, exactly where she remembered.

The brass key turned with a reluctant click.

Inside lay a sealed envelope, a small tape recorder, and a document bearing Richard's signature.

Eleanor opened the envelope first.

She read the letter silently, then covered her mouth.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She handed it to me.

Richard had written that he knew Patricia was not acting alone. He had suspected that someone within his own household had been manipulating the trust, forging signatures, and directing the transfers.

But the final paragraph made my hands go cold.

If Claire Bennett ever discovers the truth, she must be told that the person responsible for the original fraud is not Patricia, Vanessa, or Daniel.

I looked up.

“Who else was involved?””

Alexander pressed the button on the tape recorder.

A man's voice filled the conservatory.

Richard Whitmore.

“If you're hearing this, it means I failed to stop the person I trusted most.””

The recording crackled.

Then Richard spoke a name.

Not Patricia.

Not Vanessa.

Not Daniel.

He named Eleanor Whitmore.

Alexander recoiled.

“No.””

Eleanor stared at the recorder, tears streaming down her face.

“That recording is incomplete,” she whispered.

But the machine continued.

Richard's voice became clearer.

“Eleanor was the only person who had access to the original trust documents. She knew about the forged signatures. She knew about the transfers. And she was the one who instructed me to create the sixty-two-million-dollar trust for Lily Bennett.””

I stepped away from Eleanor.

“Is it true?””

She looked at me, devastated.

“I can explain.””

Alexander shook his head.

“Mother, tell me you didn't do this.””

Eleanor opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, a second voice emerged from the recorder.

A woman's voice.

Patricia's voice.

And she said something none of us had expected.

“Richard, if you reveal what Eleanor did, I'll make sure the world learns what you did to your own son.””

Alexander went completely still.

“What did my father do?””

The recording clicked off.

Eleanor looked at him, her face drained of color.

May you like

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Alexander, your father knew you weren't his biological son.””
