Chapter 4: The Evidence They Forgot
The police were not called.
Not yet.
I wanted the whole truth before anyone walked away.
Maybe that was the part of me that was still trying to understand how I ended up standing in my own wedding venue surrounded by evidence of betrayal.
A man doesn’t prepare for heartbreak like this.
You prepare for arguments.
You prepare for disagreements.
You prepare for the possibility that someone might leave.
You don’t prepare for discovering that the person promising to love your child was planning how to remove her.
I took Nia into my arms.
“Baby, can you go sit with Aunt Lorraine for a minute?””
She looked at me.
“Are you going to leave me?””
The question nearly destroyed me.
I lowered myself so we were eye level.
“Never.””
Her eyes searched mine.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
She nodded slowly.
My aunt wrapped her arms around her and led her away.
Only after Nia was gone did I turn back toward the people who had tried to hurt her.
Darius noticed.
“You’re making this dramatic.””
I looked at him.
“No. I’m making sure my daughter doesn’t have to hear adults discuss her like she’s a business deal.””
That shut him up.
Aisha walked beside me.
“There’s something else.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She opened another file on her tablet.
“When I saw the documents, I thought maybe Camille was trying to surprise you with some kind of financial arrangement. But then I found these.””
She showed me photographs.
Copies of emails.
Notes.
Meeting schedules.
My name appeared repeatedly.
Camille and Darius had been planning for months.
Months.
While I was picking out flowers.
While I was choosing music.
While I was sitting across from Camille at dinner believing we were building something.
They were planning around me.
Aisha pointed to one document.
“This one is from a private school.””
I read the heading.
A residential academy.
The kind of place wealthy families sent teenagers who needed structure.
Not six-year-olds.
My vision blurred.
“They already contacted them?””
Camille looked down.
“I was going to discuss it after the wedding.””
I turned toward her.
“After the wedding?””
She swallowed.
“You would have understood eventually.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You would have made sure I couldn’t stop it.””
She didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
Darius stepped forward.
“You’re acting like we committed some terrible crime.””
I looked at him.
“You forged legal documents.””
“You can’t prove that.””
Aisha lifted the tablet.
“You mean besides the recording?””
Darius’s expression changed.
“You don’t understand what you have.””
“No,” I said.
“You don’t understand what I have.””
I walked closer.
“I have my daughter. I have the documents. I have your conversation. I have witnesses.””
I looked around the room.
“And I have every person here who watched you get exposed.””
For the first time, Darius looked uncertain.
Because men like him don’t fear anger.
They fear evidence.
Camille started crying.
“Marcus, please.””
I looked at her.
There was a time when that voice would have pulled me back.
Not anymore.
“I gave you every chance to be honest.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She wiped her face.
“That you would choose Nia over me.””
The words hung in the air.
I stared at her.
Because that was the truth.
The simplest truth.
She wanted a place in my life.
But she didn’t want to accept that my daughter already owned the biggest piece of my heart.
“You were right about one thing,” I said.
Camille looked up.
“I will always choose Nia.””
Her face collapsed.
Darius suddenly reached toward the folder.
I stepped back.
“No.””
He stopped.
“Those papers belong to me.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.
“Your papers?””
“Yes.””
I laughed once.
“You mean the papers with my daughter’s name on them?””
Darius’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
I looked toward security.
“This is the last warning.””
The officers stepped forward.
Darius finally realized the room had changed.
He was no longer the man controlling the situation.
He was the man trapped inside it.
As security moved toward him, his phone slipped from his pocket and hit the floor.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
One sentence that revealed there was more to this plan than I ever imagined.
*The transfer must happen before Marcus finds out.*
And beneath it was a name.
Not Camille.
Not Darius.
May you like
Someone else.
Someone who had been helping them from the beginning.
