Chapter 8: The Box in the Closet

The drive home felt longer than it ever had before.

The same streets I had driven hundreds of times looked different.

Maybe because I was different.

A few hours earlier, I was a man preparing to marry someone I thought would complete my family.

Now I was a father trying to understand how many people had been waiting for the right moment to take advantage of my trust.

Nia sat quietly in the back seat.

Usually, she would ask questions.

She would point out dogs walking with their owners.

She would tell me about a song she heard at school.

She would make up stories about the clouds.

But that night, she was silent.

And a silent child carries a weight adults don’t always notice.

When we arrived home, I carried her inside.

The house looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

The world had changed.

But the pictures on the wall were still there.

The couch still had the blanket Elena used to love.

The kitchen still had the little marks on the doorway where we measured Nia’s height every birthday.

Life kept going even when your heart didn’t know how.

I put Nia to bed.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you mad at me?””

The question shocked me.

“What?””

“Because Camille got upset when I didn’t call her Mommy.””

My chest tightened.

I sat beside her.

“Baby, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“Nothing you did caused this.””

“But she said I was bad.””

I felt anger rise.

Not the kind that makes you reckless.

The kind that makes you protective.

“You are not bad.””

I held her hand.

“You were honest. You told the truth. That’s what brave people do.””

She nodded.

Then she asked the question I knew was coming.

“Will Mommy be upset?””

I swallowed.

“No.””

I smiled sadly.

“Your mommy would be proud of you.””

After she fell asleep, I walked to our bedroom.

The closet door was still the same.

Inside were old clothes, boxes, and memories I had avoided opening because every piece of Elena felt like touching a wound.

But tonight was different.

Tonight I needed answers.

I moved the boxes aside.

There it was.

The wooden box.

The one Elena and I bought at a small market during our first vacation together.

I opened it carefully.

Inside were years of our lives.

A movie ticket from our first date.

A picture from our wedding.

A tiny hospital bracelet from when Nia was born.

And underneath everything was another envelope.

My heart stopped.

Because it had my name on it.

Marcus.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The letter was longer than the first.

My love,

If you are reading this, then something happened that made you search for answers.

I sat down.

Elena continued.

I need you to understand something. The people closest to us are not always the people safest for us.

I stopped reading for a moment.

That sentence felt like a warning written directly for me.

She continued.

After my diagnosis, I noticed changes. People asking questions they shouldn’t ask. People becoming interested in things that had nothing to do with love.

I looked around the room.

Elena had known.

She had been watching.

She had been preparing.

Then I reached the part that made my hands go cold.

Marcus, I believe someone close to us tried to access Nia’s trust before. I don’t know how far they went. I don’t know who else is involved.

But I saved evidence.

Evidence.

I kept reading.

There is a hidden drive inside this box. It contains everything I found.

My heart raced.

I searched through the box again.

Underneath the lining was a small compartment.

Inside was a tiny flash drive.

I stared at it.

A piece of the truth.

A piece of Elena’s last fight.

I picked up my laptop.

But before I plugged it in, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman whispered.

“Marcus?””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It was someone I never expected to hear.

Someone who should not have known about the drive.

Someone who had not been at the wedding.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“I’m calling because Elena was right.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who are you?””

The answer came quietly.

“Someone who helped her uncover the truth.””

I stood up.

“Why are you calling me now?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because Darius knows you found the evidence.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

The woman’s voice dropped.

“Because someone inside your house has been reporting everything you do.””

I looked around the room.

At the walls.

At the pictures.

At the memories.

May you like

And suddenly my home didn’t feel like the safest place in the world anymore.

It felt like the place where someone had been watching me all along.
