Chapter 6: The Brother Nobody Knew
The name was Marcus.
I learned that before the sun went down.
Marcus Whitmore.
Vanessa’s older brother.
The man who supposedly left the family years ago and disappeared from everyone’s lives.
Except apparently, he hadn’t disappeared.
He had been inside that mansion.
Near Noah.
Near the stroller.
Near the secret Vanessa was trying to hide.
Adrian sat in his office with both hands pressed against his forehead.
I had never seen him look that broken.
Not when Noah was pulled from the pool.
Not when Vanessa was questioned.
This was different.
This was betrayal from another direction.
“I don’t understand,” he said.
Nobody answered.
Because there was no easy answer.
The officer explained that they were looking into Marcus’s connection to the house. They needed more information.
But information was exactly what nobody seemed to have.
Vanessa had built walls around her past.
High ones.
Beautiful ones.
The kind of walls people mistake for privacy.
I watched Adrian stare at the paused image of the shadow in the nursery.
“How did he get inside?””
The officer looked at him.
“Does he have a key?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
That silence was enough.
“He does,” I said.
Both men looked at me.
I swallowed.
“Vanessa gave him access.””
Adrian looked confused.
“How do you know?””
“Because she told me.””
“When?””
I looked down.
“Three months ago.””
Adrian sat up.
“What?””
I had never told him because I didn’t think it mattered.
Because I never imagined it would lead here.
“Marcus came by one afternoon. Vanessa told me not to mention it.””
“Why?””
“She said he was going through a difficult time.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“And you listened?””
I felt a flash of anger.
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
“I listened because I was your employee,” I said.
“Not because I trusted him.””
Adrian immediately looked ashamed.
“I didn’t mean—”
“I know.””
I softened.
“But that’s how this works. People like me are expected to stay quiet.””
That sentence stayed between us.
Because it was true.
For years, I had learned how to survive by noticing things and saying less.
Rich people’s homes were full of secrets.
The only difference was whether you were invited to keep them.
The officer asked me more questions about Marcus.
I told him everything I remembered.
Tall.
Dark hair.
A scar near his eyebrow.
A man who smiled without warmth.
A man who looked at Noah like he was studying him.
When I said that last part, Adrian looked up.
“What do you mean?””
I hesitated.
“He didn’t look at Noah like family.””
“How did he look?””
I searched for the right words.
“Like Noah was a problem he needed to solve.””
Adrian stood.
“I need to talk to Vanessa.””
The officer stopped him.
“Not alone.””
Adrian looked frustrated.
“She’s my wife.””
“And she’s a person of interest.””
Those words hurt him.
I could see it.
Person of interest.
Not wife.
Not mother.
Not the woman he loved.
Just someone connected to a crime.
Later that evening, I saw Vanessa sitting in the living room.
For the first time since I met her, she looked small.
No makeup.
No perfect smile.
No performance.
Just a woman sitting in silence.
She looked up when I entered.
“You hate me now.””
I stopped.
I didn’t expect that.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
She laughed quietly.
“That’s worse.””
I said nothing.
She looked toward the window.
“Do you know what people see when they look at me?””
I waited.
“A rich woman who has everything.””
Her voice cracked.
“But they don’t know what it’s like to feel like everything can disappear.””
I studied her.
“Is that why you did this?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t push Noah.””
The answer was immediate.
But it wasn’t enough.
“Then tell me what happened.””
Vanessa looked away.
For a moment, I thought she would finally tell the truth.
Instead, she whispered:
“My brother came to me because he needed money.””
I waited.
“And when I refused…”
She stopped.
The silence grew.
“What did he do?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Fear filled her eyes.
“He threatened to expose something.””
My heart dropped.
“Expose what?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Adrian’s voice came from behind me.
“Vanessa.””
We both turned.
He stood in the doorway.
His face was unreadable.
“Who is Noah’s real father?”” he asked.
May you like
The room went completely still.
And for the first time that night, Vanessa had no lie ready.
