Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Past
The question didn’t just enter the room.
It exploded inside it.
“Who is Noah’s real father?””
Adrian’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm that comes when someone has already been hurt so deeply that anger doesn’t even know where to go.
Vanessa stared at him.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
I stood frozen near the doorway, suddenly wishing I had never heard those words.
Not because I didn’t want the truth.
Because I knew the truth could destroy everything.
Some secrets don’t just hurt people.
They rearrange entire families.
“Adrian…” Vanessa whispered.
He shook his head.
“No.””
One word.
Final.
“I need you to answer me.””
She looked down.
For the first time since I met her, Vanessa had nowhere to hide.
No expensive smile.
No perfect excuse.
No carefully chosen words.
Just fear.
The officer standing nearby quietly stepped back, giving them space but staying close enough to hear.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“I found the messages.””
My eyebrows lifted.
Messages?
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What messages?””
“The ones between you and Marcus.””
Her eyes widened.
Adrian continued.
“The ones where he said he knew the truth about Noah.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
And that reaction told us everything.
She knew exactly what he was talking about.
I watched Adrian’s face.
He looked devastated.
Not angry.
Not hateful.
Just broken.
“How long?”” he asked.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Adrian…”
“How long did you know?””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Since before Noah was born.””
The words felt heavy.
I looked away.
Some moments feel too private, even when you’re standing in the middle of them.
Adrian stepped back.
“You let me believe he was mine.””
Vanessa cried silently.
“I was scared.””
“Scared?””
His voice rose for the first time.
“You were scared?””
The room shook with the pain behind that question.
“I built my entire life around him,” Adrian said.
“I loved him. I protected him. I planned everything for him.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
He pointed toward the hallway where Noah slept.
“You don’t know what that means.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She had no answer.
Because there was no good time to reveal a lie that big.
I had seen families break over smaller things.
A hidden debt.
A forgotten promise.
A betrayal that lasted a few weeks.
But this?
This was years.
Marcus had known.
Vanessa had known.
And Adrian had been living inside a story that wasn’t real.
The officer finally spoke.
“We need to understand Marcus’s involvement.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“He’s dangerous.””
Adrian turned.
“You invited him into my house.””
“I know.””
“You gave him access to our child.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I made a mistake.””
I almost believed her.
Almost.
But then I remembered the stroller.
The wet hand.
The accusation.
“You didn’t just make a mistake,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you understand everything?””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“But I know you tried to make me look guilty.””
She looked away.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
The room went silent.
Adrian noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa froze.
I felt the shift immediately.
She had said too much.
Adrian moved closer.
“Vanessa.””
She started crying harder.
“I didn’t plan for Noah to fall.””
Those words made my entire body go cold.
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes a confession doesn’t sound like one.
Sometimes it comes disguised as an explanation.
Adrian stared at her.
“What did you plan?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I wanted to scare Marcus.””
The officer immediately stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Marcus knew about Noah. He knew I lied. He threatened to tell Adrian unless I paid him.””
“Paid him how much?”” the officer asked.
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
Adrian looked disgusted.
“You gave him money?””
“Yes.””
“Then why was he still here?””
Vanessa’s face crumbled.
“Because he wanted more.””
I thought about the shadow in the nursery.
The way Marcus watched.
The way he moved around that house like he belonged there.
Vanessa continued.
“I told Marcus I was done. I told him I wouldn’t let him blackmail me anymore.””
“And the stroller?”” Adrian asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
It was the first answer she gave that sounded completely honest.
“I swear.””
The officer looked at the evidence.
“We need to find Marcus.””
But before anyone could move, Adrian’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed.
“What?””
He walked away from us.
A few seconds passed.
Then he looked back.
And I knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”” Vanessa asked.
Adrian lowered the phone slowly.
“The security company.””
Nobody spoke.
“They found a vehicle leaving the property last night.””
The officer stepped closer.
“Whose vehicle?””
Adrian looked directly at Vanessa.
“Marcus’s.””
My heart sank.
Because if Marcus left after Noah fell…
May you like
Then he wasn’t just hiding.
He was running.
