Chapter 14: The Recording That Changed Everything

The underground room was beneath the estate's old library.

I remembered the library from childhood.

My grandmother used to sit beside the fireplace and read to me while Charles entertained guests downstairs.

I had never known there was another room beneath it.

Natalie led us toward a narrow door behind the bookshelves.

The silver key fitted perfectly.

The lock turned.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Richard switched on his phone flashlight.

“Stay close.””

The room at the bottom was surprisingly clean.

There was a desk, several while Charles entertained guests downstairs.

There was a desk, several filing cabinets, and a small recording device connected to an old speaker.

On the wall hung a calendar.

November 2000.

A red circle marked the eighteenth.

The night my father died.

Natalie walked toward the desk.

“Margaret told me never to touch anything until the right person came.””

I looked at her.

“Who was the right person?””

She placed her filing cabinets, and a small recording device connected to an old speaker.

On the wall hung a calendar.

November 2000.

A red circle marked the eighteenth.

The night my father died.

Natalie walked toward the desk.

“Margaret told me never to touch anything until the right person came.””

I looked at her.

“Who was the right person?””

She placed her hand on the recording device.

“You.””

She pressed a button.

Static filled the room.

Then a man's voice emerged.

Daniel.

My father.

I hadn't heard his voice in twenty-six years.

“Margaret, if you're listening to this, then something has happened.””

Mom began crying.

Daniel continued.

“I know Charles has discovered the transfers. I know he has threatened Patricia. But there's something else you need to understand.””

A hand on the recording device.

A pause.

Then came a woman's voice.

My grandmother.

“Daniel, please. We can still fix this.””

“No, Mother. You can't fix what Charles has done.””

I felt my throat tighten.

The recording continued.

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“I've spent years pause.

Then came a woman's voice.

My grandmother.

“Daniel, please. We can still fix this.””

“No, Mother. You can't fix what Charles has done.””

I felt my throat tighten.

The recording continued.

Daniel sounded exhausted.

“I've spent years covering for him. I let him control the company because I believed he was my brother. But he has stolen money, manipulated the hospital records, and used innocent children to protect himself.””

Margaret began crying.

“Please don't go to the police.””

“I have to.””

“Charles will destroy this family.””

“He already has.””

A door slammed.

Then another voice appeared.

Charles.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

Daniel answered calmly.

covering for him.

“No. I made a mistake when I trusted you.””

I gripped the edge of the desk.

Charles continued.

“You think the police will believe you? You're the one who signed the hospital transfer documents. You're the one who helped hide the children.””

“I signed them to save them.””

“And who will believe that?””

A chair scraped.

Then Daniel said something that made Mom cover her“No.

Then Daniel said something that made Mom cover her mouth.

“I have a copy of everything. Including the payment you made to the doctor who switched the identification bracelets.””

Silence.

Then Charles spoke again.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

There was a struggle.

A heavy crash.

Then the recording stopped.

I stared at the device.

“That's it?””

Natalie shook her head.

“There's another file.””

She pressed a second button.

A different voice filled the room.

A woman.

It was mouth.

“I have a copy of everything. Including the payment you made to the doctor who switched the identification bracelets.””

Then Charles spoke again.

A woman.

It was Patricia.

“Daniel, if you are hearing this, I have done something terrible.””

My mother gripped my arm.

Patricia continued.

“Charles told me that if I helped him, he would let me keep Vanessa. He said Daniel was planning to take her away. I believed him.””

There was a long pause.

“But I saw what he did to the car.””

Mom gasped Patricia.

Mom gasped.

The recording continued.

“He loosened the brake line himself. I watched him. I begged him to stop, but he said Daniel would destroy everything if he reached the police.””

My stomach turned.

Patricia began crying.

“I tried to warn Evelyn. I called her, but she wouldn't answer. Then Charles found out I had spoken to her.””

A door opened.

A man's.

The recording continued.

“He loosened the brake line himself. I watched him. I begged him to stop, but he said Daniel would destroy everything if he reached the police.””

My stomach turned.

Patricia began crying.

“I tried to warn Evelyn. I called her, but she wouldn't answer. Then Charles found out I had spoken to her.””

A door opened.

A man's voice shouted.

“Turn that off!””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Charles stood at the top of the stairs.

He had followed us.

His face was red.

“Give me the device.””

I stepped in front of it.

“No.””

He looked at Natalie.

“You stupid girl. Do you understand what you've done?””

Natalie raised her chin.

“Yes. I've stopped you.””

Charles laughed.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

Richard voice shouted.

“Turn that off!””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Charles stood at the top of the stairs.

Charles laughed.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

Richard pulled out his phone.

“I've already sent copies of the recordings to Detective Reed.””

Charles froze.

“What?””

“And to the police.””

For several seconds, Charles didn't move.

Then pulled out his phone.

“I've already sent copies of the recordings to Detective Reed.””

Charles froze.

“What?””

“And to the police.””

For several seconds, Charles didn't move.

Then he turned toward me.

“Matthew, listen. Your father wasn't innocent. He was going to expose everyone, including your mother.””

Mom stepped forward.

“Stop lying.””

Charles pointed at her.

“Ask her what she did with the money!””

Mom's face crumpled.

“I gave it to Laura to protect the baby.””

“And you kept some for yourself.””

Mom shook her head.

“No.””

Charles smiled.

“The bank records will show everything.””

Richard opened he turned toward me.

“Matthew, listen. Your father wasn't innocent. He was going to expose everyone, including your mother.””

Mom stepped forward.

Mom shook her head.

“No.””

Charles smiled.

“The bank records will show everything.””

Richard opened the folder.

“They show the money was transferred to Laura's account. Every penny.””

Charles's expression changed.

I stepped closer.

“You killed my father.””

He stared at me.

“He forced my hand.””

“You killed him.””

“He was going to destroy my company!””

“It wasn't your company!””

Charles suddenly lunged toward the desk.

Natalie screamed.

He grabbed the recording device and tried to pull out the the folder.

“They show the money was transferred to Laura's account. Every penny.””

Charles's expression changed.

I stepped closer.

“You killed my father.””

He stared at me.

“You killed him.””

“He was going to destroy my company!””

“It wasn't your company!””

Charles suddenly lunged toward the desk.

Natalie screamed.

He grabbed the recording device and tried to pull out the cables.

I caught his arm.

We crashed against the desk.

A drawer flew open.

Several photographs scattered across the floor.

Charles shoved me backward.

I hit the wall.

Richard grabbed him from behind.

“Enough!””

Charles struggled.

Then something slipped cables.

I caught his arm.

We crashed against the desk.

A drawer flew open.

Several photographs scattered across the floor.

I hit the wall.

Richard grabbed him from behind.

“Enough!””

Charles struggled.

Then something slipped from his jacket.

A small photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed Daniel standing beside Patricia outside the hospital.

On the back was a handwritten message.

The truth about Vanessa must never be revealed.

I looked at Charles.

“What does this mean?””

He stopped struggling.

Mom took the photograph.

Her hands trembled.

Then she turned it over again.

“Daniel wrote this.””

I stared.

“Why from his jacket.

I picked it up.

It showed Daniel standing beside Patricia outside the hospital.

I looked at Charles.

“What does this mean?””

He stopped struggling.

Mom took the photograph.

Her hands trembled.

Then she turned it over again.

“Daniel wrote this.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Natalie looked at the photograph.

“Because Vanessa wasn't just his daughter.””

I frowned.

“What else?””

Natalie reached into the filing cabinet and removed a sealed medical envelope.

Inside was a genetic report.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

And suddenly, everything became clear.

Vanessa was Daniel's biological daughter.

But the report also identified another child.

A twin.

The name was Grace.

I looked at Natalie.

“?””

Natalie looked at the photograph.

“Grace and Vanessa are twins?””

Natalie nodded.

“Daniel and Patricia had twins. Vanessa was raised as Anna, and Grace was hidden under another identity.””

I shook my head.

“But Lily is Grace's mother.””

Natalie looked down.

“No. Lily was told that. The adoption documents were altered.””

MyGrace and Vanessa are twins?””

My mind raced.

“Then who is Grace's biological mother?””

Natalie pointed to the report.

Patricia Bennett.

I looked at Mom.

She nodded slowly.

“Margaret switched more than one baby.””

The truth was worse than we had imagined.

Patricia had given birth to twins.

Marg mind raced.

“Then who is Grace's biological mother?””

Natalie pointed to the report.

Patricia Bennett.

I looked at Mom.

She nodded slowly.

“Margaret switched more than one baby.””

The truth was worse than we had imagined.

Patricia had given birth to twins.

Margaret had arranged for one child to be raised as Vanessa and the other to be raised under the identity of Grace.

Lily had been manipulated into believing Grace was her daughter.

The purpose was to keep Charles from discovering that his wife had given birth to Daniel's children.

I looked at Natalie.

“Then why did you say Grace was your daughter?””

Natalie began crying.

“Because Patricia told me that. I believed it until I found the records.””

The room fell silent.

Suddenly, a voice came from the stairs.

“That's enough.””

We turnedaret had arranged for one child to be raised as Vanessa and the other to be raised under the identity of Grace.

We turned.

Detective Reed stood at the entrance with two police officers.

Charles looked toward him.

“You have no authority to be here.””

Reed held up the original recording.

“I have enough evidence to arrest you.””

Charles laughed.

“You have a recording made twenty.

Charles looked toward him.

“You have no authority to be here.””

Reed held up the original recording.

“I have enough evidence to arrest you.””

Charles laughed.

“You have a recording made twenty-six years ago.””

“And a confession from Patricia. A financial trail. A forged medical record. And three witnesses.””

Charles looked at me.

“Matthew, tell them what your mother did.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She knew Daniel was in danger. She left him there.””

Charles smiled.

“Ask her why she drove away.””

I turned toward Mom.

She closed her eyes.

Then she finally told me.

“Because Daniel begged me to take the baby and run.””

She looked at the photograph.

“He knew Charles was going to kill him. He wanted me to save the child.””

I felt my throat close.

“Which child?””

Mom whispered:

shaking.

“Vanessa.””

Charles was handcuffed.

As the officers led him upstairs, he turned toward me.

“You think this is over?””

I said nothing.

He smiled.

“There's one more person you need to find.””

Then he disappeared through the doorway.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

Detective Reed approached me.

“Matthew, there's something else.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He handed me a sealed envelope.

It was“Vanessa.””

It was addressed to me.

The handwriting belonged to my father.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a short letter.

Matthew, if you're reading this, I hope you have found the courage to forgive your mother. She did what I asked her to do.

I stopped.

My eyes filled.

And if you want to know who ordered my death, don't look at Charles.

The final sentence was underlined twice.

But Patricia was dead.

Or so everyone had told us.

Detective Reed watched my expression.

“Matthew, we found something in the hospital archives this afternoon.””

“What?””

He lowered his voice.

“Patricia Bennett's death certificate was forged.””
