Chapter 8: My Mother's Last Secret

Mom placed the photograph on the coffee table.

Nobody moved.

It showed my father standing beside a woman outside a small roadside restaurant.

The woman was young, with dark hair and a long beige coat.

I recognized her from the photograph in the bank.

Laura.

But that wasn't what made me stare.

Standing behind them was my mother.

She looked younger, but unmistakably herself.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

Mom lowered her eyes.

“Your grandmother kept it.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Tell him what happened, Evelyn.””

Mom looked at her.

“You have no right to speak about that night.””

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“Neither do you, apparently.””

I stepped between them.

“Both of you stop. I want the truth.””

Mom sat down.

Her hands trembled as she placed the photograph beside the documents.

“Your father called me at 8:15 that evening. He told me he needed to speak to me urgently.””

“About what?””

“Laura.””

I waited.

“He had discovered that Laura was pregnant. He believed Charles was threatening her because she had copies of the company records.””

I looked at Grace.

“Was she already born?””

Mom nodded.

“Grace was a few months old. Laura had been hiding her from Charles.””

Lily's eyes filled.

“So Laura was protecting my daughter?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't she come to me?””

Mom looked at Lily.

“Because Charles had threatened to have you arrested for kidnapping if you tried to take Grace. He had forged documents suggesting you had voluntarily surrendered custody.””

Lily covered her mouth.

Mom continued.

“Your father wanted me to help Laura escape. He had arranged a meeting at a roadside restaurant. I went there because he asked me to bring some money.””

“The $500,000?”” I asked.

She nodded.

“But when I arrived, Charles was already there.””

Vanessa looked away.

Mom's voice became quieter.

“He was arguing with Daniel. Laura was sitting in the car, holding Grace.””

I leaned forward.

“What happened?””

“Charles demanded the documents. Your father refused. Then Charles threatened to take the baby.””

Mom began crying.

“Daniel told him he would rather lose everything than allow another child to be stolen from her mother.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Then why did you say my mother was connected to the accident?””

Vanessa answered before Mom could.

“Because she drove away with the money.””

Mom shook her head.

“I was trying to get Grace somewhere safe.””

“You left my father there,” I said.

The words came out before I could stop them.

Mom closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“Did you know he was in danger?””

“I knew Charles was furious. I didn't know he would go that far.””

Richard's voice came from the doorway.

“Evelyn, that's not entirely true.””

Everyone turned.

He stood there holding a brown envelope.

Mom looked devastated.

“Richard, please.””

He placed the envelope on the table.

“Margaret asked me to keep this until Matthew knew the truth.””

I opened it.

Inside was a typed statement signed by my mother.

The date was November 18, 2000.

Three days after my father's accident.

The statement said that Mom had seen Charles tampering with Daniel's car before the meeting.

My hands went numb.

I read it again.

“You knew.””

Mom began sobbing.

“I suspected.””

“You wrote it down!””

“I was going to report him.””

“Then why didn't you?””

She looked at me.

“Because Charles threatened to make sure you disappeared too.””

The room fell silent.

“He told me he knew where you went to school. He knew the route your bus took. He knew which friends you visited. He said if I spoke, I would lose both my children.””

I stared at her.

“What about Sophie?””

Mom covered her face.

“He knew about her too.””

I sat down.

For the first time, I understood why Mom had been so protective.

Why she checked every lock twice.

Why she never allowed me to walk home alone.

Why she became frightened whenever Charles visited.

She hadn't simply been grieving.

She had been living in fear.

But there was still one question.

“Why did you let Vanessa into my life?””

Mom looked at her.

“Because I didn't know who she was until it was too late.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That's a lie.””

Mom shook her head.

“Your mother approached me before you met Marcus. She told me she wanted our families to become close.””

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“Patricia was trying to help.””

“No,” Mom replied.

“Patricia was trying to find the documents Margaret had hidden.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you approach me because of the trust?””

She didn't answer.

“Did you know my grandmother had named me as the primary beneficiary?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

I felt something break inside me.

“Was any of it real?””

She looked at me.

“Marcus, I did love you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you help your father hide what happened to mine?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Because I was raised to believe Charles had done nothing wrong. He told me your father was stealing from the company. He told me your mother had helped him.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was twelve when he started telling me those things!””

Grace spoke quietly.

“You were old enough to know what happened to me.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Grace, I was a child too.””

“You were twenty when you found out the truth.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Grace stepped forward.

“You knew Patricia wasn't my biological mother. You knew Lily was alive. And you still helped your father keep us apart.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I was afraid of him.””

“So was I,” Grace replied.

“But I didn't make other people pay for it.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Richard opened the brown envelope again.

“There is something else.””

He removed a small photograph.

It showed Charles standing beside a police officer.

The officer was holding a sealed evidence bag.

The date was written underneath.

November 19, 2000.

The day after my father's death.

I recognized the officer.

He was the same man who had signed the original accident report.

Richard tapped the photograph.

“Charles paid him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Richard continued.

“The original report was altered. The brake inspection photographs were replaced. The mechanic's statement was removed.””

He turned toward me.

“But the original evidence wasn't destroyed.””

My heart began racing.

“Where is it?””

Richard looked at Mom.

“Your grandmother found it years later. She gave it to someone she trusted.””

Mom whispered:

“Thomas Reed.””

The retired detective.

I pulled out my phone and called the number on Richard's business card.

It rang four times.

Then a man's voice answered.

“Reed.””

“My name is Matthew Bennett. My grandmother was Margaret Bennett.””

Silence.

Then the man said:

“I've been waiting for this call.””

I gripped the phone.

“Do you have the original evidence from my father's accident?””

“Yes.””

“Can you prove what happened?””

Another pause.

“I can prove who tampered with the car.””

My breath caught.

“Who?””

The detective lowered his voice.

“Your uncle Charles.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had started crying.

Then Detective Reed added:

“But there's something else in the file.””

“What?””

“A second witness statement. Someone saw the accident happen.””

I waited.

The detective continued.

“And Matthew, that witness is still alive.””

“Who is it?””

He answered with a name.

“Your fiancée.””

I looked at Vanessa.

May you like

She slowly lifted her head.

And for the first time, she didn't deny it.
