Chapter 7: The Truth Behind the Door
Naomi stared at the photograph.
Her mother's hand was pressed against the hospital window.
Three words written in the fogged glass.
*HE IS HERE.*
The message should have answered everything.
Instead, it created a hundred more questions.
Who was there?
Dr. Foster?
Daniel?
Someone else?
Naomi looked at Detective Morgan.
“You need to get there.””
“We are.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“Not later. Not after paperwork. Not after another meeting.””
Detective Morgan didn't argue.
Because he saw the same thing everyone else saw.
The fear in Naomi's eyes.
Not the fear of losing her mother.
The fear of being too late.
“Units are already moving,” he said.
“How long?””
“Ten minutes.””
Naomi shook her head.
“Ten minutes is enough time for someone to disappear.””
Detective Morgan's expression tightened.
“You're right.””
Principal Harris looked at him.
“Then what do we do?””
The detective looked at Naomi.
“We get answers.””
The drive to St. Catherine Medical Center felt endless.
Rain hit the windshield.
The city moved around them.
Cars.
Lights.
People walking under umbrellas.
Normal life.
Naomi watched everything through the window and wondered how the world could continue when hers had stopped.
Beside her, Callie sat quietly.
For once, she wasn't trying to be noticed.
She looked small.
Afraid.
Naomi glanced at her.
“Why did you really help him?””
Callie stared at her hands.
“I told you.””
“You were threatened.””
“Yes.””
“But that isn't the whole reason.””
Callie didn't answer.
Naomi waited.
Finally, Callie whispered,
“At first, I hated you.””
Naomi looked away.
“I figured.””
“You had everything I thought I didn't.””
Naomi frowned.
“What?””
“You had people who cared about you.””
A bitter smile crossed Callie's face.
“Teachers checked on you. Students respected you. Even when you were quiet, people noticed you.””
Naomi almost laughed.
“People noticed me because they felt sorry for me.””
“No.””
Callie shook her head.
“They noticed because you were real.””
The words surprised Naomi.
Callie looked out the window.
“I spent my whole life pretending.””
“Pretending what?””
“That I was better than everyone.””
Naomi didn't respond.
“My parents fought constantly. My dad left. My mom blamed me for everything.””
Callie swallowed.
“I thought if I made everyone think I was perfect, nobody would see how broken things were.””
“And then he found you.””
“Yes.””
“What did he promise?””
Callie's eyes lowered.
“He said he could make me powerful.””
Naomi looked at her.
“And you believed him?””
“I was sixteen.””
The answer was quiet.
“I believed anyone who sounded like they knew what they were doing.””
The car went silent.
Then Callie said,
“But I didn't know what he wanted until it was too late.””
Naomi looked at her.
“What did he want?””
Callie's face changed.
“He wanted your mother to tell him where something was.””
“What?””
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
Callie looked at her.
“Because that's what scared him.””
Naomi frowned.
“What?””
“He wasn't angry because he couldn't find it.””
“He was angry because your mother wouldn't give it to him.””
The hospital appeared ahead.
Detective Morgan parked before the car fully stopped.
“Stay behind me.””
Naomi ignored him.
She followed.
The emergency entrance was filled with movement.
Doctors.
Nurses.
Security.
Everyone looked tense.
A hospital administrator rushed toward them.
“Detective Morgan?””
“Yes.””
“Room 426.””
“What happened?””
The administrator looked shaken.
“Dr. Foster entered eight minutes ago.””
“And?””
“The nurse heard raised voices.””
“Who was with her?””
The administrator hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
Naomi stepped forward.
“What?””
“She was speaking to someone.””
“Who?””
“We don't know.””
Detective Morgan looked toward the elevators.
“Let's move.””
The doors opened.
They rushed inside.
The numbers climbed.
Fourth floor.
Room 426.
Naomi's heart pounded harder with every second.
The doors opened.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
She hated that immediately.
Hospitals were never silent.
Not like this.
Detective Morgan raised his hand.
Everyone stopped.
From the end of the hallway came a sound.
A woman crying.
Naomi ran.
“Mom!””
Detective Morgan grabbed her arm.
“Wait.””
But Naomi was already looking through the glass.
Her mother was inside.
Sitting on the bed.
Alive.
And beside her stood Dr. Elaine Foster.
No weapon.
No struggle.
Just two women facing each other.
Naomi pushed the door open.
“Mom.””
Her mother turned.
The expression on her face broke Naomi.
Not fear.
Relief.
“Naomi.””
She immediately reached out.
Naomi crossed the room and hugged her.
Her mother held her tightly.
Too tightly.
Like she was afraid Naomi would disappear.
“I thought I lost you.””
Naomi pulled back.
“I thought I lost you.””
Her mother touched her face.
“You shouldn't be here.””
“I know.””
“You need to leave.””
“No.””
Her mother looked terrified.
“Naomi, listen to me.””
“No.””
Naomi shook her head.
“Not this time.””
Dr. Foster stepped back.
“I can explain.””
Naomi turned.
“You.””
The doctor looked exhausted.
“I know how this looks.””
“You were at Ravenwood.””
“Yes.””
“You were with my father.””
“Yes.””
“You were in this room when my mother wrote that message.””
Dr. Foster looked at her.
“Yes.””
Naomi's anger rose.
“Then start explaining.””
Her mother grabbed her hand.
“Naomi.””
“No, Mom.””
Her voice cracked.
“I spent my entire life thinking Dad abandoned us.””
Her mother's eyes filled.
“I know.””
“I thought you were protecting me from the truth.””
“I was.””
“From what?””
Her mother looked at Dr. Foster.
Then back at Naomi.
“From him.””
Naomi froze.
“Dad?””
Her mother shook her head.
“No.””
The room went silent.
“Then who?””
Her mother looked toward the door.
“Someone who used to be family.””
A cold feeling moved through Naomi.
“Who?””
Her mother closed her eyes.
“Elaine.””
Naomi turned.
Dr. Foster looked down.
“You knew?””
Naomi whispered.
“You knew everything.””
Dr. Foster nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The doctor sat down.
“Because I was there the night your father disappeared.””
Naomi felt her breath catch.
“Tell me.””
Dr. Foster looked at her mother.
“Your father discovered something.””
“What?””
“A secret.””
“What secret?””
Her mother answered.
“About your grandfather.””
Naomi frowned.
“My grandfather?””
“He wasn't the man you thought he was.””
Naomi looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Dr. Foster spoke quietly.
“Your grandfather built a company. A successful one.””
“So?””
“He also built something else.””
Naomi waited.
“A private network.””
“For what?””
Dr. Foster looked at the door.
“Information.””
Naomi felt confused.
“Information?””
“People. Locations. Secrets.””
Her mother nodded.
“Your father found out he had been watching people for years.””
“And?””
“He didn't want to be part of it.””
Naomi stared.
“My father left because of my grandfather?””
Her mother looked down.
“No.””
A tear fell.
“He left because your grandfather threatened you.””
Naomi froze.
“What?””
“He said if Daniel went to the police, you would disappear.””
The room became silent.
Naomi's mind struggled to process.
Her father didn't leave.
He ran.
For her.
Dr. Foster continued.
“Daniel created a plan.””
“What plan?””
“To expose everything.””
“And my mother?””
“She helped him.””
Naomi looked at her mother.
“Then why did you let me believe he abandoned us?””
Her mother broke.
“Because I needed you to hate him.””
Naomi stepped back.
“What?””
“If someone was watching you, they needed to believe Daniel meant nothing to you.””
Her mother's voice trembled.
“If they knew you loved him, they would use you to find him.””
Naomi looked away.
All those years.
All that pain.
Her mother had let her hate a man who had been trying to protect her.
Then Naomi noticed something.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
“If Dad was hiding…”
She swallowed.
“Why is he back now?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew the answer.
Someone had forced him out.
Detective Morgan's phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
“Yes?””
His face changed.
“What?””
He looked at Naomi.
“No.””
“What?””
He lowered the phone slowly.
“We found Daniel Storm.””
Naomi froze.
“Where?””
Detective Morgan stared.
“At Ravenwood.””
Her heart raced.
“He's alive?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“But there's a problem.””
“What?””
Detective Morgan looked at her mother.
“He wasn't the one who took the photographs.””
Naomi frowned.
“What does that mean?””
The detective took a breath.
“Daniel has been hiding there for fifteen years.””
Naomi stared.
“Then who has been watching me?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Dr. Foster quietly answered.
“I think we know.””
Everyone turned.
The doctor looked terrified.
“Because the person who built that surveillance room…”
She swallowed.
“Is the same person who built your grandfather's network.””
Naomi's blood went cold.
“Who?””
Dr. Foster looked at her.
And whispered a name.
A name Naomi had never heard before.
But her mother had.
Because the second she heard it, she started crying.
“No.””
Naomi grabbed her mother's hand.
“Mom.””
Her mother shook her head.
“No.””
“Who is it?””
Her mother's voice broke.
“The person your father spent fifteen years running from.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“Your uncle.””
