Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Badge
The gun was already raised.
Naomi saw it before anyone else moved.
Not because she was faster.
Because she was watching for the wrong person.
Everyone had been looking at the hallway.
At Marcus.
At the threat they expected.
Nobody had been looking beside them.
Detective Morgan stood near the hospital bed, his face tense, his weapon aimed toward the door.
But the person holding the gun wasn't Detective Morgan.
It only looked like him.
The badge.
The jacket.
The voice.
All borrowed.
Naomi's eyes locked on the man's hand.
A small scar crossed his knuckle.
A scar she had seen before.
The memory hit her instantly.
A man kneeling in front of her when she was six.
A gold ring.
A scar.
A voice whispering that she would understand someday.
Not Marcus.
Him.
The fake detective.
“You.””
The man's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
He knew she remembered.
Her mother grabbed Naomi's arm.
“Who is he?””
Naomi couldn't answer.
Her mind was racing.
The man smiled.
“Smart girl.””
The voice wasn't Detective Morgan's anymore.
It was deeper.
Older.
Familiar.
The hallway outside erupted with movement.
Someone shouted.
Security ran past the glass.
The fake detective stepped backward.
“You were always the problem.””
Naomi stared.
“What?””
“Your memory.””
He looked almost disappointed.
“Your father underestimated how much a child remembers.””
Dr. Foster moved closer.
“Victor.””
The man looked at her.
“Still protecting them, Elaine?””
Naomi froze.
Victor.
Another name.
Another piece.
Her mother whispered,
“Victor Hale.””
The man's smile returned.
“Your mother remembers.””
Naomi looked between them.
“Who is he?””
Dr. Foster's face was pale.
“He worked with Marcus.””
Victor laughed softly.
“Worked with?””
He shook his head.
“That's what you tell yourself?””
The door behind him slammed open.
A security guard rushed forward.
Victor moved instantly.
He grabbed the guard's weapon and pushed him aside.
Everything happened too fast.
Naomi barely processed it.
Then Marcus's voice came from the hallway.
“Victor.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus stood at the end of the corridor.
No hood.
No disguise.
No mystery.
For the first time, Naomi saw her uncle clearly.
He looked nothing like the monster she had imagined.
He looked like her father.
Same eyes.
Same posture.
Same calm expression.
But colder.
Much colder.
Victor turned.
“You're late.””
Marcus smiled.
“And you're still making mistakes.””
Naomi looked at him.
“You knew he was here.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you warn us?””
“Because I needed him to reveal himself.””
Her anger exploded.
“You used my mother as bait.””
Marcus's expression changed.
For the first time, something like guilt appeared.
“I protected your mother.””
“You kidnapped her.””
“No.””
His voice hardened.
“I moved her before Victor could.””
Naomi stared.
“What?””
Her mother looked at Marcus.
“Is that true?””
Marcus nodded.
“I knew he had access to the hospital.””
Dr. Foster whispered,
“Then the photograph…”
“Staged.””
Marcus looked at Naomi.
“The window. The message. The fear.””
“You wanted me to come to Ravenwood.””
“Yes.””
“You wanted me to find the truth.””
“Yes.””
Naomi felt betrayed.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at the key in her hand.
“Because you were the only person your father trusted.””
Naomi closed her fingers around it.
“You watched me for fifteen years.””
Marcus didn't deny it.
“Yes.””
“That isn't protection.””
“No.””
His answer was quiet.
“It isn't.””
Naomi stared at him.
“Then what was it?””
Marcus looked away.
“Regret.””
The word surprised everyone.
Victor laughed.
“Don't listen to him.””
Marcus ignored him.
“Your father made me promise something.””
“What?””
“To keep you alive.””
Naomi's throat tightened.
“And you did that by watching me?””
“Yes.””
“You could have talked to me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Victor was watching.””
Victor smiled.
“Always blame me.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because it's true.””
Victor lifted the weapon slightly.
The room became tense.
“Enough.””
Everyone stopped.
Victor looked at Naomi.
“You want the truth?””
Naomi stared.
“Yes.””
“Your father wasn't hiding from Marcus.””
She looked at her uncle.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
“He was hiding from both of us.””
Marcus's expression changed.
“Don't.””
Victor continued.
“He discovered what we built.””
“What did you build?””
“A system.””
Naomi frowned.
“The surveillance network.””
“Yes.””
Victor looked proud.
“Your grandfather started it. Marcus expanded it.””
Marcus said nothing.
“And your father?””
Victor laughed.
“Your father thought he was better than us.””
Naomi looked at Marcus.
“Is that true?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Victor stepped closer.
“Daniel stole the archive because he wanted to expose everyone involved.””
“So he was the good one.””
Victor smiled.
“Good?””
He shook his head.
“No one in this family was good.””
Naomi felt sick.
“What are you saying?””
Victor looked directly at her.
“Your father made a deal.””
Marcus's face changed.
“Stop.””
“What deal?””
Victor smiled.
“To save you.””
Naomi froze.
“He traded something.””
“What?””
“The archive.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
Victor raised the weapon.
“Stay back.””
Naomi looked at Marcus.
“What did he trade?””
Marcus looked away.
That was the answer.
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“My father didn't.””
Victor smiled.
“He gave me access to the files.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed I would keep my promise.””
“And did you?””
Victor's smile disappeared.
“No.””
The room went silent.
Naomi felt anger rising.
“What promise?””
Victor looked at her.
“That I would leave his daughter alone.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Naomi understood.
Victor hadn't been hunting her because of the archive.
He had been hunting her because of revenge.
“You hated my father.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victor's expression darkened.
“Because Daniel thought he could destroy everything we built.””
“You mean your crimes.””
Victor smiled.
“Call them whatever makes you feel better.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
More officers.
Victor looked annoyed.
“You're running out of time.””
Marcus looked at him.
“No.””
Victor laughed.
“You still think you won.””
Then he looked at Naomi.
“You don't even know what your father hid.””
Naomi held up the key.
“This?””
Victor's eyes moved.
Just for a second.
But Naomi saw it.
The reaction.
The fear.
This key mattered.
Victor saw it too late.
Marcus noticed.
“So that's why.””
Victor's face hardened.
“What?””
“You weren't after the archive.””
Marcus looked at Naomi.
“You were after the key.””
Victor said nothing.
Naomi stepped backward.
“Why?””
Victor stared at the key.
“Because your father was smarter than all of us.””
“What did he do?””
Victor's jaw tightened.
“He split the archive.””
“How?””
“Digital files.””
“Where?””
“Locked away.””
Naomi looked at the key.
“A key can't open digital files.””
Victor smiled.
“Not a normal one.””
The room went quiet.
Naomi looked down.
The brass key.
The letters.
R.S.
“Ravenwood Study.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Naomi remembered the hidden room.
The underground entrance.
The old desk.
“My father hid it there.””
“No.””
Victor answered.
“He hid the second half there.””
Naomi looked up.
“Second half?””
“The key opens something else.””
“What?””
Victor stared at her.
“Your father's final message.””
Nobody moved.
Even Marcus looked surprised.
Victor laughed.
“Daniel knew one day you would find out.””
He looked at Naomi.
“He knew you would come looking.””
Naomi felt a strange sadness.
Her father had planned for this.
He had known.
Maybe since the night he disappeared.
“Where is it?””
Victor smiled.
“You really think I'd tell you?””
“No.””
Naomi looked at the key.
“But I think you just did.””
Victor frowned.
“What?””
“You're afraid.””
A flicker crossed his face.
“You're afraid because if I open it, everyone sees the truth.””
Marcus looked at Naomi.
“She's right.””
Victor's expression changed.
The calm disappeared.
“You have no idea what you're holding.””
“No.””
Naomi stepped forward.
“But I know what you're afraid of.””
She held the key tighter.
“Not losing the archive.””
A pause.
“Losing control.””
For the first time, Victor looked angry.
Not annoyed.
Not amused.
Angry.
The lights suddenly went out again.
A scream came from the hallway.
When emergency lights returned, Victor was gone.
The window beside him was open.
Rain blew into the room.
Everyone rushed over.
Gone.
Only one thing remained on the floor.
A small envelope.
Naomi picked it up.
Her name was written on the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
She knew the handwriting.
Her father's.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Five words.
*I NEVER LEFT YOU, NAOMI.*
She turned it over.
There was another sentence.
One that made her stop breathing.
*BUT YOUR MOTHER KNOWS WHY I HAD TO.*
Naomi looked up.
Her mother was crying.
“Mom?””
Her mother closed her eyes.
“I was hoping you would never have to read that.””
Naomi stared.
“What did you do?””
Her mother whispered,
“What I thought would save you.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“What destroyed all of us.””
