Chapter 2: The Recording That Changed Everything
I stood completely still.
The voice coming from the recorder was unmistakably Vanessa's.
Not the trembling, frightened voice I'd heard downstairs.
This voice was cold.
Controlled.
Almost bored.
“Vanessa,” I whispered.
My mother didn't answer.
The recording continued.
“Evelyn, I've been patient with you. I've listened to your comments about my cooking, my friends, my parenting, and practically every decision I've made since moving into this house.””
My mother's recorded voice answered quietly.
“I have never tried to control your marriage.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You don't have to admit it. I know what you're doing.””
“I'm trying to have a relationship with my grandchild.””
“You're trying to make Marcus choose you.””
There was a brief silence.
Then Evelyn spoke again.
“Vanessa, I don't want to argue. You're very pregnant, and I think we should talk when we're both calmer.””
“No. We're talking now.””
I looked at my mother.
She was watching my face.
The recording continued.
“Do you know what your problem is?”” Vanessa asked.
“You still think you're the most important woman in Marcus's life.””
“That's not what I think.””
“Then prove it. Stop interfering.””
“I haven't interfered.””
“You told Marcus I shouldn't be handling the baby's finances.””
“Because you asked him to put the entire savings account in your name.””
“That was between my husband and me.””
“And I stayed out of it.””
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
“Not completely. You never stay out of anything.””
A chair scraped against the floor.
Then Evelyn said something that made me sit down.
“Vanessa, why are you so angry with me?””
“Because you won't disappear.””
I stared at the recorder.
My mother closed her eyes.
The next sound was a sharp slap.
Then another.
I jumped.
A few seconds later, Vanessa began screaming.
“Get away from me!””
Evelyn's voice sounded frightened.
“What are you doing?””
“Don't touch me!””
“I didn't touch you!””
“Marcus is going to hear about this!””
Then the recording ended.
I sat there with the device in my hand.
My mouth felt dry.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“She hit herself?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I watched her do it.””
“Why didn't you stop her?””
“I was standing across the room. She struck her own cheek before I understood what she was doing.””
I replayed the final thirty seconds.
The slap.
The scream.
The accusation.
Everything suddenly made sense.
My wife had staged the entire thing.
“Why didn't you show me this immediately?””
“I wanted to,” Mom replied.
“But when you walked into that room, Vanessa was already on the floor. You were looking at her, not at me.””
I lowered my head.
“I called you a liar.””
“You were frightened.””
“I sent you upstairs like you were the one who did something wrong.””
My mother reached for my hand.
“Marcus, I'm not asking you to hate your wife. I'm asking you to open your eyes.””
I swallowed hard.
“Did she say anything else?””
Mom hesitated.
“What?””
“She mentioned something about the baby. Something about keeping you away from your grandchild.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why would she do that?””
“Because I think she believes a grandmother is a threat to her position in this family.””
I looked at the recorder again.
Then I heard footsteps.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
She was wearing a pink bathrobe, her damp hair falling over one shoulder.
“What are you two doing?””
I quickly switched off the recorder.
“Talking.””
Her eyes moved toward the device in my hand.
“What is that?””
“Nothing.””
She stepped into the room.
“Why are you holding a recorder?””
My mother stood up.
“Vanessa, perhaps we should all sit down.””
Vanessa ignored her.
“Marcus, give me that.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I don't like people recording me without permission.””
Mom folded her arms.
“You didn't seem concerned about that earlier.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“What is that supposed to mean?””
“Nothing,” I said.
She stared at me for several seconds.
Then she placed a hand over her stomach.
“Is she telling you more lies?””
I didn't answer.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I can't believe you're doing this to me. After everything that happened today.””
I finally found my voice.
“Vanessa, what happened today?””
She blinked.
“What?””
“What happened between you and Mom?””
“I already told you.””
“Tell me again.””
Her expression hardened.
“Why? So you can interrogate me?””
“Just answer the question.””
She looked at the recorder.
Then she looked at my mother.
“I knew it.””
“What?””
“She recorded me. She planned this.””
My mother shook her head.
“You asked me to speak privately.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course. You're always the victim.””
I stood up.
“Vanessa, I heard the recording.””
Silence.
Her face went completely blank.
For the first time since I'd known her, I couldn't read what she was thinking.
Then she began crying again.
“You listened to it?””
“Yes.””
“Without me?””
I stared at her.
“You're worried about that?””
She wiped her cheek.
“You don't understand. Your mother provoked me.””
“Did she hit you?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Did Mom touch you?””
“She pushed me emotionally.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
She turned toward the bed.
“I can't do this. I'm eight months pregnant, Marcus. I need rest.””
She walked out.
I followed her into the hallway.
“Vanessa, we're not finished.””
She stopped at the top of the stairs.
Then she turned around.
“You should be careful about accusing your wife of something like this.””
“Why?””
“Because I have proof too.””
My heart skipped.
“What proof?””
She lifted her phone.
“Do you really think I came into this house without protecting myself?””
She descended the stairs slowly.
At the bottom, she turned back.
“Tomorrow, you'll understand why nobody is going to believe your mother.””
That night, I didn't sleep.
I sat in the nursery, surrounded by unopened boxes of baby clothes and pale blue paint samples.
I kept thinking about the woman I'd married.
The woman who had cried in my arms when we saw our baby's heartbeat for the first time.
The woman who had promised to love my family as her own.
At 2:17 a.m., my phone buzzed.
It was a message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
It showed my mother standing behind Vanessa in the living room, her hand raised near Vanessa's face.
The angle made it look like an attack.
Underneath it was a message.
*I told you your mother was dangerous. Now imagine what else she might do when you're not around.*
I stared at the photograph.
Then I noticed something strange.
The clock on the wall behind them showed 3:42.
But the incident had happened at 6:15.
Someone had sent me an old photograph.
May you like
Someone had deliberately edited the story.
And whoever that person was, they had access to more than just my wife's phone.
