Chapter 9: The Signature She Needed

The hospital parking lot was nearly full when I arrived.

I carried the blue folder under my arm and headed straight for the maternity ward.

A security guard stopped me at the entrance.

“Sir, are you visiting a patient?””

“My wife is in labor.””

He checked his list.

“Name?””

“Vanessa Hayes.””

He looked at his screen.

“I'm sorry, sir. You're not currently listed as an authorized visitor.””

I stared at him.

“I'm her husband.””

“I understand, but the patient has requested restricted access.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Who is authorized?””

He checked again.

“Adrian Cole and Chloe Bennett.””

I laughed once.

It wasn't funny.

My pregnant wife had apparently decided that her lover and her sister could be present for the birth, but her husband could not.

“Call the charge nurse.””

The guard hesitated.

“Sir—”

“Please call the charge nurse.””

He picked up the telephone.

A few minutes later, a woman in blue scrubs approached.

“Mr. Hayes?””

“Yes.””

“I'm Nurse Patricia. Your wife has requested privacy.””

“Is she in labor?””

Patricia looked uncomfortable.

“She's being monitored. The doctor hasn't confirmed active labor yet.””

“Then I need to speak with her.””

“I can ask.””

I took a breath.

“There's a legal document someone is trying to make me sign. I need to know whether it's been submitted to the hospital.””

Patricia's expression changed.

“What document?””

I showed her the photograph.

She studied it.

“I haven't seen this before.””

“Can you check?””

She nodded.

“Wait here.””

I watched her disappear through the double doors.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Finally, she returned with a doctor.

“Mr. Hayes, I'm Dr. Bennett.””

He shook my hand.

“Your wife is stable. We have no medical reason to prevent you from speaking with her, but she has asked that Adrian Cole be present.””

“I understand.””

The doctor looked at the document.

“This appears to be a private declaration, not a hospital form. We cannot require you to sign it.””

I felt a little relief.

“Has anyone submitted it?””

“Someone gave a copy to the administrative desk this morning. It hasn't been processed.””

“Who?””

He checked a note.

“A woman named Chloe Bennett.””

I frowned.

“Chloe?””

The doctor nodded.

“She said it was urgent.””

I looked toward the corridor.

My sister-in-law had been helping Vanessa all along.

But why?

Before I could ask another question, Patricia approached.

“Mr. Hayes, your wife says she'll speak with you.””

The doctor stepped aside.

“Please keep the conversation calm. Your wife needs to avoid unnecessary stress.””

I entered the room.

Vanessa was sitting upright in bed.

Adrian stood beside her, holding a paper cup of coffee.

Chloe sat near the window.

All three looked at me.

Vanessa's expression was the first to change.

“Marcus.””

I ignored Adrian.

“Can we speak alone?””

Adrian shook his head.

“I'm staying.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Your choice.””

She glanced between us.

“Adrian can stay.””

I nodded slowly.

“Fine.””

I placed the blue folder on the chair.

Then I took out the photograph of the declaration.

“What's this?””

Vanessa looked at it.

Her face remained calm.

“Something I wanted you to sign.””

“Why?””

“To protect the baby.””

“By declaring me the father before a DNA test?””

She sighed.

“Marcus, we don't need to make everything difficult.””

I stared at her.

“You told the hospital Adrian was the father.””

“I told them there was uncertainty.””

“You listed him as your emergency contact.””

“He's been helping me.””

I looked at Adrian.

“Helping you steal my money?””

He shifted in his chair.

Vanessa immediately intervened.

“Don't speak to him like that.””

I almost laughed.

“You're defending him in front of your husband?””

“I'm defending someone who has been there for me.””

I looked at Chloe.

She was staring at her hands.

“Chloe, did you submit this document?””

She looked up.

“I was asked to deliver it.””

“By Vanessa?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

“She said it was necessary.””

I turned back to my wife.

“Necessary for what?””

Vanessa folded her hands over her stomach.

“Marcus, you need to understand something. If the baby is yours, I want you to be responsible. If the baby is Adrian's, then we'll discuss things privately.””

“Privately?””

“Yes.””

“What about the money?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“What money?””

“The forty-eight thousand dollars.””

Adrian put down his coffee.

“This isn't the place.””

I turned toward him.

“You're right. The police station might be better.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“Don't threaten him.””

“I'm not threatening anyone.””

I took out my phone.

“I've already contacted a lawyer. The bank has frozen the transfer. The forged authorization is being investigated.””

Vanessa sat perfectly still.

Then she looked at Adrian.

He stood up.

“You said the transfer was already approved.””

Vanessa's head snapped toward him.

“Shut up.””

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

There it was.

The first crack in their perfect partnership.

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa, you told me the money was secure.””

“Not now.””

“You said the trust wouldn't be a problem.””

I stepped forward.

“What trust?””

Vanessa glared at him.

“Adrian, stop talking.””

He looked at me.

“Your father left a six-million-dollar trust. She told me you didn't know about it.””

I stared at him.

Vanessa's face changed.

“You idiot.””

Adrian took a step backward.

“You said it was part of the deal.””

“What deal?”” I asked.

He looked at Vanessa.

Then he laughed nervously.

“I think you should ask your wife.””

Vanessa suddenly began breathing heavily.

She pressed a hand against her stomach.

“Stop. Both of you.””

The monitor beside her began beeping faster.

Patricia rushed into the room.

“What's happening?””

“I think I'm having contractions,” Vanessa gasped.

The nurse checked the monitor.

“Let's get the doctor.””

Adrian moved toward the bed.

Vanessa grabbed his hand.

“Don't leave me.””

I stood near the door.

For a moment, I wanted to walk out and never look back.

But then I heard her cry out.

And despite everything she'd done, I couldn't ignore the possibility that my child was about to be born.

The doctor entered and ordered everyone to step back.

“Her contractions are increasing. We need to prepare.””

Patricia turned toward me.

“Mr. Hayes, please wait outside.””

I nodded.

As I reached the doorway, Vanessa called my name.

“Marcus!””

I stopped.

She looked terrified.

“Please don't let them take my baby.””

I turned around.

“What?””

She looked at Adrian.

Then at Chloe.

And finally, she whispered something that changed the entire situation.

“There's something you don't know about the pregnancy.””

The doctor looked up.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Before I got pregnant, Adrian and I agreed that if the baby was a boy, he would take him.””

I stared at her.

Adrian's face went white.

“That is not what we agreed.””

Vanessa shook her head frantically.

“You promised!””

The doctor stepped between them.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

But I wasn't looking at the doctor anymore.

I was looking at Adrian.

“What exactly did you promise my wife?””

He opened his mouth.

Then Chloe stood up.

“I know what they promised.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She reached into her handbag and removed a second envelope.

“I kept the original agreement because I knew one day this would happen.””

Vanessa screamed.

“Chloe, don't you dare!””

Chloe ignored her.

She handed the envelope to me.

I opened it.

The first page contained a handwritten agreement between Vanessa and Adrian.

The second page contained a clause about the unborn child.

And the final line read:

*If the child is confirmed to be male, Adrian Cole will receive primary custody in exchange for payment of $250,000 to Vanessa Hayes.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

Adrian was backing toward the door.

And the doctor was already reaching for the telephone.

May you like

Because suddenly, this was no longer just a marriage falling apart.

It was a question of whether my unborn child had been treated like something that could be bought and sold.
