Chapter 2: The Evidence Beneath the Ashes

The old train station looked exactly like the kind of place where secrets went to die.

The police arrived before sunrise.

Adrian stood behind the yellow tape, watching officers move through the abandoned platform. The city was still waking up, but his world had already changed.

Again.

Detective Marcus Reed, a veteran investigator who had handled several cases involving Adrian’s company, approached him.

“You understand this doesn’t mean your wife is alive,” Reed said.

Adrian looked at him.

“I understand.””

“We have a child’s statement and a witness who waited a week before coming forward.””

“I understand.””

Reed studied him.

“You’re different than I expected.””

Adrian almost smiled.

“People usually expect a man like me to break things.””

“Usually?””

“Usually.””

The detective looked toward the station.

“But you’re letting us do our job.””

Adrian looked at the abandoned building.

“My wife spent her whole life telling me that having power meant knowing when not to use it.””

The detective nodded.

Then the search began.

For hours, nothing happened.

Every minute felt like another piece of hope being taken away.

Adrian tried not to imagine Simone somewhere nearby, hurt and afraid. He tried not to think about her eating alone, sleeping somewhere unsafe, believing she couldn’t trust the man who loved her.

Because that was the part he couldn’t understand.

If Simone was alive, why hadn’t she come home?

Why had she hidden from him?

Then an officer called out.

“Detective!””

Everyone turned.

A young officer stood near the back entrance of the station.

“We found something.””

Adrian moved forward before stopping himself.

The tape blocked his path.

For once, he obeyed.

The officer carefully lifted a small evidence bag.

Inside was a ring.

Not a wedding ring.

A thin gold ring with a tiny blue stone.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

Simone wore it when she traveled.

She always said the wedding ring was too precious to risk losing, so she kept the smaller ring for ordinary days.

“She was here,” Adrian whispered.

Nobody answered.

Then another officer approached.

“Detective, we found blood.””

Adrian’s heart stopped.

The sample was sent for testing.

Within hours, the result came back.

The blood belonged to Simone Cole.

She had survived the crash.

The world Adrian knew cracked open.

His wife had been alive after the funeral.

After the prayers.

After everyone told him goodbye.

Then the security footage changed everything.

The station had one old camera still connected to the city system. The footage was damaged, blurry, and incomplete.

But there was enough.

A woman.

Walking.

Weak.

Holding her side.

A large black Cane Corso beside her.

Bruno.

Adrian watched the screen over and over.

The woman moved slowly, but he knew her.

He knew the way she walked.

The way she held her shoulders when she was in pain.

The way she reached down and touched Bruno’s head.

Simone.

Alive.

Adrian covered his mouth with his hand.

For sixty days, he had visited a grave.

For sixty days, he had spoken to a stone.

And somewhere in the world, his wife had been fighting to survive.

The next step was the hardest.

They had to exhume the body.

The cemetery was quiet when they arrived.

Adrian stood beside Simone’s grave, staring at the name carved into the marble.

SIMONE COLE.

But now the name looked like a lie.

When the coffin was opened, everyone prepared for confirmation of the impossible.

Instead, they found another woman.

The body belonged to Claire Donnelly.

A thirty-four-year-old accountant who had worked for one of Adrian’s shipping subsidiaries.

A woman who had disappeared three months earlier.

A woman nobody had been searching for because everyone thought the remains belonged to Simone.

Detective Reed looked at Adrian.

“Do you know her?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

But the question stayed in the air.

Why Claire?

Why Simone?

And who had enough access to make the world believe one woman was another?

The answer came from the records.

The dental files had been changed.

The accident report had been altered.

Someone had planned every detail.

This wasn’t a tragic accident.

It was murder.

And then Adrian saw the name connected to the investigation.

Victor Moreau.

His best friend.

The man who held his shoulder at the funeral.

The man who cried beside him.

The man who told him some losses never made sense.

Adrian stared at Victor’s name on the report.

For the first time in his life, he understood something more painful than losing someone.

It was discovering that the person comforting you during your grief might have been the person who created it.

And somewhere out there, Simone was still hiding.

Still afraid.

Still carrying the truth.

Adrian looked toward the empty road beyond the cemetery.

He had spent his life building an empire because he believed control kept people safe.

But his wife had disappeared right under his protection.

Now he had one mission.

May you like

Find Simone.

And find out why Victor Moreau wanted her dead.
