Chapter 4: The Woman Who Stayed Hidden
Simone Cole learned how to disappear.
That was the first thing she taught herself after surviving the fire.
Not how to fight.
Not how to escape.
How to disappear.
Because when the world believed you were dead, being seen became dangerous.
She remembered waking up in the back of an abandoned warehouse with Bruno pressing against her side.
The pain had been unbearable.
Her ribs felt broken. Her shoulder burned. Every breath reminded her that she had almost died.
But Bruno was there.
The dog that everyone thought was lost.
The dog who had refused to leave her.
“Good boy,” she whispered.
Bruno rested his head against her hand.
For a moment, Simone allowed herself to cry.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she thought about Adrian.
She imagined him standing beside her grave.
She imagined his face.
And the guilt almost destroyed her.
But then she remembered Victor.
She remembered the night everything changed.
She had been driving home after meeting Claire.
Claire was supposed to bring the evidence directly to Adrian.
The files.
The bank records.
The proof that Victor had been stealing millions.
But Claire never made it.
And Simone had barely escaped.
The crash was no accident.
The car behind her had pushed her off the road.
She remembered the flames.
The glass.
The impossible heat.
She remembered Victor’s men searching through the wreckage.
She remembered hearing one of them say:
“She’s not there.””
They knew she survived.
They were looking for her.
That was why she stayed away.
Not because she didn’t love Adrian.
Because she loved him too much.
Victor knew Adrian’s habits. He knew the security system. He knew the people around their family.
If Simone went home, Victor would know.
And then Adrian would become a target.
So she hid.
She moved between empty buildings and safe houses.
She trusted almost nobody.
Except Denise.
And Lily.
The little girl who found her near the train station.
Simone smiled when she remembered that day.
She had been sitting behind the old building, exhausted and weak, when Lily walked toward her.
“You’re hurt,” the child had said.
Simone froze.
Most adults would have screamed.
A child just stared.
Then Lily reached into her pocket and handed her a small flower.
“My mommy says flowers help people feel better.””
Simone almost broke right there.
Because it reminded her of home.
Of the garden Adrian built for her.
Of Sunday mornings.
Of a life she wasn’t sure she would ever get back.
Now, hiding in a small rented apartment across town, Simone watched the news.
The story was everywhere.
The fake grave.
The missing wife.
The investigation into Victor Moreau.
For the first time in two months, she saw Adrian.
He stood outside the courthouse with reporters surrounding him.
He looked older.
Tired.
Broken.
Simone covered her mouth.
She wanted to run to him.
She wanted to forget everything and fall into his arms.
But fear held her back.
Then Adrian spoke.
“My wife was taken from me.””
Simone’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was not forgotten. She was not abandoned. And whoever did this will answer for it.””
She stared at the screen.
Because she knew Adrian.
He meant every word.
But she also knew something else.
Finding Victor would not bring their marriage back automatically.
Too much had happened.
Too many secrets.
Too much pain.
A knock came at the door.
Simone immediately reached for the hidden phone.
“Who is it?””
“It’s me.””
Denise.
Simone opened the door quickly.
Denise stepped inside with Lily holding her hand.
The little girl smiled.
“Miss Simone!””
Simone knelt and hugged her.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Almost.
Then Denise’s expression changed.
“Simone…”
“What?””
“Adrian knows.””
Simone froze.
“What do you mean?””
“He knows you’re alive.””
The room went quiet.
Simone looked toward the window.
The life she had built in hiding was collapsing.
“Does he know where I am?””
“No.””
“Does Victor?””
Denise shook her head.
“Not yet.””
Simone closed her eyes.
Not yet.
Two words that changed everything.
Because the moment Adrian found her, the truth would come out.
And after everything she had done to protect him, she didn’t know if he would understand.
May you like
She had to decide whether to keep hiding…
or finally go home.
