Chapter 6: The Name Written Inside the Envelope
I didn’t open the envelope.
Not immediately.
My fingers were wrapped around it, but my mind couldn’t move.
Because everyone had been lying to me in different ways.
My father hid the truth.
My stepmother hid her brother’s involvement.
My mother hid her pain behind years of silence.
And now this stranger was standing in front of me, telling me the person who destroyed my family was someone I knew.
Someone in this family.
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face was frozen.
Not confused.
Not angry.
Afraid.
That was the moment I knew.
The answer wasn’t hidden somewhere far away.
It was standing right in front of me.
“Vanessa?””
Her lips trembled.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
She looked down.
The woman who had tucked me into bed when I was sick.
The woman who had sat beside me during my first heartbreak.
The woman who called me her son.
She couldn’t look at me.
“Open it,” Raymond said.
Marcus turned toward him.
“Enough.””
Raymond looked at him.
“You had eighteen years.””
The words hit harder than a threat.
“You had eighteen years to tell him.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“You don’t know what I did to protect him.””
Raymond laughed once.
“Protect him?””
His eyes moved to me.
“Is that what you call it?””
I looked at Marcus.
The question hurt because I already knew the answer.
My father believed he was protecting me.
Maybe he even believed it completely.
But good intentions didn’t erase damage.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of papers.
The first page was a photograph.
A security camera image.
The quality was old and slightly blurred.
But I recognized the location.
It was the parking lot of a courthouse.
The date was printed in the corner.
The day before my mother lost custody.
My eyes moved across the image.
There was Amelia.
Younger.
Holding a folder.
Standing beside a car.
And next to her…
Vanessa’s brother.
The same man who appeared in the old photograph Daniel showed me.
My breathing slowed.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why was your brother there?””
She covered her mouth.
Tears fell.
“I didn’t know.””
I stared at her.
“You keep saying that.””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know what he was doing.””
“But he was involved.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
She didn’t deny it.
She didn’t defend him.
She just admitted it.
“Why?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Because my brother was angry.””
“At my mother?””
She nodded.
“Because he believed she was going to ruin everything.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Everything meaning?””
Nobody spoke.
I turned another page.
This one was a document.
A transfer record.
A name.
A company.
A series of payments.
My eyes moved over the details.
Then stopped.
Because I saw the same last name again.
Brooks.
“Your family?””
I looked at Raymond.
He nodded.
“My father and Marcus were business partners.””
Marcus immediately said, “Former partners.””
Raymond ignored him.
“They were supposed to build something together.””
“What happened?””
Raymond’s expression changed.
“Your mother found evidence that Marcus was hiding money from investors.””
I looked at my father.
He didn’t deny it.
Not completely.
“I made mistakes.””
Amelia looked at him.
“Mistakes don’t steal eighteen years from a child.””
Marcus looked away.
The sentence landed.
Because there was no defense against it.
I looked back at the documents.
“So my mother found out.””
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“And then?””
Amelia answered.
“Then I told Marcus I was going to the police.””
The silence afterward was immediate.
I looked at my father.
“And that’s when you took me?””
His face tightened.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Then what happened?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Older.
Like the weight of eighteen years had finally caught up with him.
“That night…”
He stopped.
I waited.
Everyone waited.
“That night, someone broke into our house.””
Amelia’s face changed.
“You never told him that part.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because it was complicated.””
“No.””
Her voice was firm.
“Because it didn’t fit your story.””
My father looked at me.
“I came home and found you crying.””
My chest tightened.
A memory appeared.
Not clear.
Just a feeling.
A loud noise.
A woman’s voice.
A door closing.
I had always assumed those were dreams.
Marcus continued.
“Your mother was gone.””
Amelia shook her head.
“I wasn’t gone.””
“You disappeared.””
“I was taken.””
The words hit again.
Like the first time.
Marcus looked at her.
“You weren’t there.””
“Because someone made sure I couldn’t be.””
I looked between them.
“Wait.””
My mind raced.
“If someone broke in…”
I looked at Raymond.
“Then who took her?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Because every time I asked the right question, everyone became silent.
Then Raymond spoke.
“Your mother wasn’t taken that night.””
I turned.
“What?””
“She escaped.””
Amelia looked at him.
Raymond nodded.
“She found out someone was coming for her.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Coming for her?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Raymond looked at Vanessa.
The entire world seemed to pause.
Vanessa shook her head immediately.
“No.””
My stomach dropped.
“Vanessa?””
She backed away.
“No.””
“Tell me.””
“I didn’t know.””
“You knew something.””
Her eyes filled.
“I knew my brother was involved.””
The confession came quietly.
“But I didn’t know he would go that far.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
Then at Amelia.
“I thought he was just helping Marcus with the custody case.””
My father’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
She ignored him.
“I thought they were trying to make sure Ethan stayed safe.””
“Safe from who?””
Her voice broke.
“From Amelia.””
The words hurt.
Even though they weren’t directed at me.
Because for eighteen years, that was the lie.
That Amelia was the danger.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“But then I found out what my brother actually did.””
“What did he do?””
She looked at me.
“He changed the evidence.””
The air disappeared.
“He made it look like your mother abandoned you.””
My hands went numb.
“Why?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Raymond answered.
“Because Marcus needed custody.””
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“And my brother needed Marcus’s money.””
The pieces started connecting.
Slowly.
Painfully.
My father wasn’t just a scared man hiding a mistake.
He was part of something bigger.
A plan.
A plan that stole my mother.
A plan that built my childhood.
I looked at Marcus.
“Did you know?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My eyes burned.
“You knew.””
Marcus looked at me.
“I knew some of it.””
“Some?””
His voice cracked.
“I didn’t know everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Does that make you feel better?””
“No.””
For once, his answer came immediately.
“No, Ethan.””
He stepped closer.
“I have regretted it every day.””
I stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled.
And that was something I had never seen before.
My father crying.
“Because every time I looked at you…”
He stopped.
“Every time I saw you happy…”
His voice broke.
“I was afraid that if I told you, I would lose the only person I had left.””
I looked away.
Because part of me understood.
And I hated that.
Understanding someone didn’t mean forgiving them.
The graduation crowd had almost disappeared now.
The ceremony was ending.
The day that was supposed to celebrate my future had become an investigation into my past.
Then Raymond’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked directly at Amelia.
“No.””
Everyone noticed.
“What happened?”” Daniel asked.
Raymond lowered the phone.
His face had lost all color.
“The police just reopened the old case.””
My heart stopped.
“What case?””
Raymond looked at me.
“The night your mother disappeared.””
Amelia stepped forward.
“Why?””
Raymond hesitated.
Then said:
“Because they found new evidence.””
A pause.
“And it proves someone tried to make sure Amelia never came back.””
I looked at Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
Then the people who had shaped my entire life.
And I realized the truth was still not finished.
Because someone had spent eighteen years hiding what happened.
And now someone was afraid that I finally knew.
Raymond looked at me.
“The evidence was found this morning.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
He looked toward the parking lot.
“At your father’s house.””
Nobody spoke.
May you like
Then Marcus whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
“They found it?””
