Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Camera
The photo on my phone made my hands go numb.
It wasn’t old.
It wasn’t from the past.
It was taken moments ago.
The angle was impossible to ignore.
Someone had been standing outside the locked room.
Someone had been watching me discover the truth.
I looked at the screen again.
My graduation gown.
The open box of letters.
The old photographs covering the walls.
Me standing in the center of everything my father tried to hide.
Then I looked toward the window.
Nothing.
Just darkness.
“Ethan?””
Amelia’s voice pulled me back.
I turned.
Everyone was watching me.
Marcus.
Vanessa.
Amelia.
Daniel.
They all saw my expression.
They all knew something had happened.
“What is it?”” Daniel asked.
I held up the phone.
“Someone took this.””
Marcus immediately moved toward me.
“When?””
“Just now.””
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You need to leave.””
The words came too quickly.
I stepped back.
“Why?””
“Because they know where we are.””
“Who?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Again.
Always the same.
A question.
Silence.
A secret.
I stared at him.
“You still don’t understand.””
His eyes met mine.
“What?””
“I’m not scared because I don’t know the truth anymore.””
I held up the phone.
“I’m scared because everyone keeps acting like they do.””
The room became quiet.
Daniel walked toward the window.
Carefully.
He looked outside.
Then he stepped away.
“No car.””
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
“It means whoever took the picture didn’t need to stay.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“They were close.””
Daniel nodded.
“Very close.””
Vanessa wrapped her arms around herself.
“This has to stop.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“Why now?””
Everyone looked at me.
“Why did they wait eighteen years?””
Nobody answered.
I continued.
“If someone wanted to hide the truth, why not destroy everything years ago?””
My eyes moved around the room.
“The letters.””
“The pictures.””
“The evidence.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Why leave this room?””
My father said nothing.
And that scared me.
Because I realized something.
Maybe the room wasn’t forgotten.
Maybe it was waiting.
Waiting for me.
Daniel slowly turned around.
“Because someone wanted Ethan to find it.””
The words landed heavily.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the letters.
“This room wasn’t just hidden.””
He pointed toward the box.
“It was preserved.””
My heart started racing.
“You’re saying someone wanted me to discover the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
My father’s face changed.
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Too immediate.
I turned toward him.
“Who?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I don’t want you involved.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Eighteen years too late.””
He looked away.
Daniel spoke.
“The person who preserved this room knew that one day Ethan would come looking.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Before Daniel could answer, the lights went out.
The entire house fell into darkness.
Vanessa gasped.
Amelia grabbed my arm.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then came a sound.
A door opening downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Marcus whispered:
“Stay here.””
I almost laughed.
Even now.
Even after everything.
He still tried to protect me by giving orders.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Ethan.””
“No more.””
I picked up the flashlight from the desk.
“I’m done waiting upstairs while everyone else decides what happens to me.””
Daniel stepped beside me.
“This time, he’s right.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You don’t know what’s downstairs.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Yes, I do.””
The silence was sharp.
Marcus stared at him.
Then I understood.
Daniel wasn’t guessing.
He knew.
“What are you not telling me?””
Nobody answered.
Then the sound came again.
A drawer opening.
Someone was inside the house.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there.
Marcus slowly walked toward the door.
I followed.
The hallway felt different.
Every photograph on the wall seemed like a reminder of a life built on lies.
We reached the stairs.
Marcus looked back.
“Stay behind me.””
I ignored him.
We walked down together.
The living room was empty.
The front door was still locked.
Nothing looked disturbed.
Then Vanessa pointed.
“The desk.””
Everyone turned.
A drawer was open.
Marcus walked toward it slowly.
“No.””
The word escaped his mouth.
I stepped closer.
“What?””
He reached inside.
His hand shook.
He pulled out a small black notebook.
I recognized it.
Not because I had seen it before.
Because of his reaction.
“What is that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Daniel took it from him.
The moment he opened the cover, his expression changed.
“It’s gone.””
“What?””
Daniel flipped through the pages.
“Some pages are missing.””
My father stared at the notebook.
“What was in there?””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Marcus.
“What was in there?””
He looked exhausted.
“Your mother’s notes.””
“About what?””
“About the investigation.””
My heart dropped.
“The one that got her framed?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“And someone came here to take those pages.””
Daniel nodded.
“Not to destroy the notebook.””
“Why?””
“Because they wanted us to know they were here.””
A message.
Not a warning.
A message.
Someone wanted us afraid.
Then my phone vibrated again.
Everyone looked at me.
Another message.
Same unknown number.
I opened it.
A video.
My thumb hovered over the screen.
“Don’t,” Marcus whispered.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face was full of fear.
“Because I know who sent it.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I pressed play.
The video began.
It was dark.
Shaky.
Recorded from a distance.
A woman was standing outside a building.
My mother.
Younger.
Terrified.
She was holding something.
A folder.
Then a man entered the frame.
I froze.
Because I recognized him.
Marcus.
But he looked different.
Younger.
Angrier.
The video had no sound at first.
Then suddenly audio appeared.
Marcus’s voice.
“You don’t understand what happens if this comes out.””
Amelia’s voice answered.
“Then let it come out.””
The video shook.
Then Marcus said:
“You’re going to lose Ethan.””
My chest tightened.
Amelia replied:
“You’re already taking him from me.””
The screen went black.
Then another clip started.
A different night.
A different location.
A car.
A man standing beside it.
David.
My biological father.
Alive.
Talking to someone.
I leaned closer.
The camera zoomed.
And I saw who he was speaking to.
Vanessa’s brother.
But then the audio became clear.
David said:
“If anything happens to me, they need to know the truth.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The video continued.
Her brother replied:
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Then the clip ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face was broken.
“My brother…”
She could barely say the words.
“He knew.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“No, he wouldn’t.””
But she knew.
She knew.
The truth was finally becoming clear.
Then the phone vibrated one more time.
A final message.
No photo.
No video.
Just words.
I read it aloud.
*“You found the past.””*
A pause.
*“Now find the person who has been protecting you from it.””*
Everyone looked at Marcus.
But the message continued.
*“Because Marcus Carter was not the only one who lied.””*
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
Then Amelia.
Then Daniel.
A final line appeared.
*“Ask Amelia why she never told you who your real father was.””*
The room went silent.
I slowly looked at my mother.
The woman I had just found.
The woman who claimed she fought for me.
Her face changed.
And I knew.
There was one more secret.
One more missing piece.
“Mom?””
She looked at me.
And whispered the words I never expected.
“I didn’t tell you…”
Her voice broke.
“Because David wasn’t your only father.””
I stopped breathing.
Marcus stepped back.
Daniel closed his eyes.
And Vanessa whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Amelia looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Ethan…”
May you like
A pause.
“Your real story is even more complicated than you know.””
