Chapter 12: The Man Who Signed Away My Childhood
The next morning, I received a call from Daniel.
His voice sounded different.
Urgent.
“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“Someone came to my house last night.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“I don't know. Two men. They asked whether I had given you any documents.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Did they take anything?””
Daniel paused.
“They took the photograph of Richard and Victoria.””
I stood.
“Are you safe?””
“I called the police. Helen is staying with our daughter for now.””
I grabbed my keys.
“I'm coming.””
“Marcus, don't.””
“I'm not leaving you alone.””
He sighed.
“There's something I didn't tell you.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“Your father visited me once. About six months before your grandfather died.””
“What did he want?””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“He wanted me to sign a statement saying I had never known Clara and had no connection to her child.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Did you sign?””
“No.””
“What happened?””
“He told me he had a judge willing to make sure the adoption was finalized whether I cooperated or not.””
“Robert Reed.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the documents on my desk.
The man who had approved the fraudulent adoption.
The man who had received half a million dollars.
The man who had helped erase my biological father.
“Daniel, would you testify against him?””
“Yes.””
“Then we need to move quickly.””
Laura arranged a meeting with federal investigators two days later.
We brought everything.
The trust documents.
The bank statements.
The recording.
The forged adoption papers.
Daniel's sworn statement.
And the original letters Eleanor had kept for decades.
An investigator named Agent Collins listened without interruption.
When we finished, she opened a separate file.
“Mr. Hayes, we have been investigating financial irregularities involving Hayes Industrial for several months.””
I looked at her.
“You have?””
She nodded.
“Several transactions appear to involve shell companies connected to the former executive leadership.””
“Victoria?””
“She's one of the individuals we're examining.””
I leaned forward.
“Can you prove she stole my inheritance?””
“We can trace some of the transfers. But we need the original company records.””
I thought of the cardboard box I had taken from my father's office.
“I have them.””
Agent Collins looked at Laura.
“Then we may have enough to move forward.””
She turned back to me.
“There's one more thing. We need to speak with Robert Reed.””
Laura nodded.
“He's still alive.””
Agent Collins closed the file.
“Then we'll arrange an interview.””
Robert Reed lived in a large house outside the city.
He was eighty-one, retired, and confined to a wheelchair.
When Agent Collins arrived with Laura and me, he appeared irritated.
“I don't understand why I'm being dragged into this,” he said.
Agent Collins placed a folder on his desk.
“Your signature appears on several disputed adoption documents.””
He glanced at them.
“I signed hundreds of documents during my career.””
“Did you approve an adoption involving Marcus Hayes?””
Robert looked at me.
For a moment, I thought he recognized me.
Then he said:
“Richard's boy.””
I stepped forward.
“My name is Marcus.””
He adjusted his glasses.
“Yes. I remember.””
“Did you approve my adoption?””
Robert looked toward Agent Collins.
“I'd prefer to speak with my attorney.””
Agent Collins nodded.
“Of course.””
She placed another document on the desk.
A bank transfer.
Five hundred thousand dollars.
Robert's expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“From your account records.””
He looked at me.
“You don't understand what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
He sighed.
“Your father was a difficult man.””
“That isn't an explanation.””
Robert looked down at his hands.
“He came to me after your grandfather died. He wanted Victoria to have legal authority over you.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard believed Eleanor was unstable.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She wasn't.””
“I know that now.””
“Did you know it then?””
He didn't answer.
Agent Collins leaned forward.
“Mr. Reed, did you knowingly approve a fraudulent guardianship?””
Robert looked at the documents.
Then he spoke.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
He continued.
“Richard told me that Eleanor had abandoned the child and that Daniel Mercer had signed away his rights. I had no reason to believe otherwise.””
I stared at him.
“Did you verify the signatures?””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you meet Daniel?””
“No.””
“Did you meet Eleanor?””
“No.””
I leaned closer.
“Then what exactly did you approve?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“An arrangement Richard had already prepared.””
I felt sick.
A judge had signed away my childhood without ever meeting the people involved.
Agent Collins placed another paper on the desk.
“What about this payment?””
Robert's breathing became uneven.
“That was not for the adoption.””
“Then what was it for?””
He looked at me.
“Richard wanted Daniel to stay away.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel knew something about the company.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Robert hesitated.
Then he said:
“Your father had been using Clara's inheritance to purchase shares in Hayes Industrial. He needed Daniel's consent because Daniel was the biological father.””
I looked at Laura.
She nodded slowly.
Robert continued.
“When Daniel refused, Richard arranged for him to be declared legally unavailable. The guardianship order was supposed to prevent him from challenging the trust.””
I stared at him.
“So my father stole from me, then paid you to make sure nobody could stop him.””
Robert lowered his head.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Did you know my mother was being threatened?””
He didn't answer.
“Did you know she was standing outside my school every week?””
Robert's eyes filled.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You never checked.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
For the first time, I understood that some people didn't need to hate you to destroy your life.
Sometimes, all they needed was to decide your life wasn't worth investigating.
The investigation moved quickly after Robert's admission.
He agreed to provide testimony in exchange for consideration regarding his cooperation.
His records helped investigators trace several transfers from the original trust.
They also discovered that Victoria had used a private company to acquire properties under false names.
But the biggest discovery came from an old accounting ledger.
Six million dollars had been transferred into an offshore account.
The account holder was listed as Marcus Hayes Holdings.
My name.
My identity.
My inheritance.
And according to the bank's records, the account had been accessed three weeks earlier.
I stared at the transaction history.
“Who accessed it?””
Agent Collins pointed to the login authorization.
“Victoria Hayes.””
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
“Was anything withdrawn?””
She nodded.
“Four hundred thousand dollars.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where did it go?””
“An account belonging to a company registered in the Cayman Islands.””
I leaned back.
“She knew we were investigating.””
Agent Collins nodded.
“Which is why we need to act quickly.””
That evening, I went to Eleanor's apartment.
She was sitting with Jayden, helping him draw an orange tree.
When I entered, Jayden jumped up.
“Dad! Look what Grandma and I made!””
He held up the drawing.
There were three orange trees, a little house, and three people standing together.
I smiled.
“That's beautiful.””
Eleanor looked at me.
“How did everything go?””
I sat beside her.
“Robert admitted what he did.””
She closed her eyes.
“Thank God.””
“He approved the false adoption without checking anything. He knew my father had paid him to keep Daniel away.””
Eleanor looked down.
“Your grandfather would have been heartbroken.””
“He tried to stop them.””
“I know.””
I took her hand.
“I'm sorry I doubted you.””
She looked at me.
“Marcus…”
“I believed every lie because I trusted the person telling it.””
She squeezed my fingers.
“You were a child.””
I nodded.
Then I looked toward Jayden.
He was carefully coloring an orange.
“Mom, I want you to be part of his life.””
Her eyes filled.
“I would love that.””
“Not once a year. Not through photographs. I want him to know you.””
Eleanor began crying.
Jayden looked up.
“Grandma, are you sad?””
She laughed through her tears.
“No, sweetheart. I'm very happy.””
He climbed onto her lap.
I watched them.
And for a moment, I thought the worst part was finally behind us.
Then my phone rang.
Agent Collins.
“Mr. Hayes, we have a problem.””
“What happened?””
“Victoria has disappeared.””
I stood.
“What?””
“Her house is empty. Her car was found at the airport. She appears to have left the country.””
I looked at Eleanor.
“Where is she going?””
Agent Collins hesitated.
“We're tracking her financial activity. But there's something else.””
“What?””
“She accessed another account this afternoon.””
“Which account?””
Agent Collins read the number.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the original account containing Clara's inheritance.
The account everyone believed had been untouched.
“Did she withdraw the money?””
“No.””
I exhaled.
Then Agent Collins continued.
“She transferred ownership of the entire account to someone else.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
There was a long silence.
Then she answered.
“Jayden Hayes.””
I stared at my son.
He was sitting beside Eleanor, smiling at the orange tree he had drawn.
My blood ran cold.
“Why would she transfer money to my son?””
Agent Collins lowered her voice.
“Because the account documents contain a clause stating that the beneficiary can only be changed with the consent of the biological parent.””
I gripped the phone.
“But I never signed anything.””
“We know.””
“Then who did?””
Agent Collins paused.
“That's what we're trying to determine.””
A message appeared on my screen.
Unknown number.
One photograph.
Victoria standing beside a private jet.
May you like
Underneath it were eleven words.
*You wanted the truth, Marcus. Now you'll learn what it costs to protect your son.*
