Chapter 14: The Last Lie

Dr. Martin Ellison was found at a private medical residence two hours away.

He was seventy-eight, retired, and living under his own name.

When Agent Collins contacted him, he initially denied knowing anything about the Hayes family.

But after she mentioned the video, he agreed to meet.

We arrived at his residence the next afternoon.

He looked frail.

His hands trembled as he poured water.

“I wondered whether that recording still existed,” he said.

I sat across from him.

“Why did you sign the document?””

He looked at Eleanor.

Then at me.

“Because Richard told me you were in danger.””

“What kind of danger?””

“He said you had suffered a severe allergic reaction and might require long-term medical supervision. He claimed your mother was emotionally unstable and could not make decisions for you.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“You knew I was there.””

Dr. Ellison looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“You saw me holding my son.””

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Then how could you?””

He didn't answer.

I leaned forward.

“Did my father pay you?””

He nodded.

“Initially, yes. But that wasn't why I continued.””

“What was the reason?””

He took a long breath.

“Richard told me that if I refused, he would expose a medical mistake I had made several years earlier.””

I stared at him.

“So he blackmailed you.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped him destroy my family.””

Dr. Ellison closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The simplicity of his answer made it worse.

“Did you know Victoria was stealing my inheritance?””

“I knew money was involved. I didn't know the full extent.””

“Did you know Daniel was alive?””

He looked up.

“Yes.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“Then why did everyone say he was dead?””

“Richard told me Daniel had agreed to remain away. He said the adoption would protect you from a custody dispute.””

“Did you believe him?””

Dr. Ellison hesitated.

“No.””

I stood.

“You didn't believe him, but you signed anyway?””

He looked devastated.

“I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“My mother was afraid. Daniel was afraid. My grandfather was afraid. Everyone was afraid of my father.””

I pointed toward the door.

“And I was a child.””

He began crying.

“I know.””

“No. You don't. You had a choice. I didn't.””

Eleanor stood beside me.

“Marcus, we came here for the truth.””

I nodded.

Then I looked at Dr. Ellison.

“Will you testify?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Will you admit you knowingly signed false documents?””

“Yes.””

“Will you tell the investigators everything about Victoria?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

Agent Collins had been recording the conversation.

She turned off the device.

“Thank you, Doctor. We'll need a formal statement.””

Victoria was located two days later.

She had not left the country.

The private jet had been chartered to a neighboring state, where she was staying at a property registered under a shell company.

Investigators discovered that she had arranged a meeting with an offshore banking representative.

She was arrested before the transfer could be completed.

When Laura called, I was standing in my kitchen.

“Marcus, she's in custody.””

I didn't feel relieved.

Not yet.

“Can I speak to her?””

“Not without investigators present.””

“Then arrange it.””

Laura paused.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

The interview room was cold and brightly lit.

Victoria sat across from me in a plain blouse.

Without her jewelry, expensive clothes, and carefully arranged hair, she looked older.

But her eyes were unchanged.

“You came,” she said.

“I wanted to hear you explain it.””

She smiled faintly.

“Explain what?””

“Why you stole my inheritance. Why you forged my mother's documents. Why you tried to make my son part of your scheme.””

Victoria leaned back.

“Your father did most of that.””

“You helped him.””

“I was married to him.””

“That isn't an excuse.””

She looked at me for a long moment.

“Richard believed he was protecting the family.””

“From whom?””

“From people who wanted to take everything away.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You mean the people whose money he stole?””

Her expression hardened.

“You have no idea what your father sacrificed.””

“I know what my mother sacrificed.””

Victoria looked away.

“He loved you.””

“Then why did he lie?””

“Because he was afraid you'd leave him.””

I stared at her.

“Was that all?””

She didn't answer.

“Why did you put your name on my adoption papers?””

Victoria folded her hands.

“Richard told me it was necessary.””

“You signed a document claiming to be my mother.””

“I raised you.””

“No. Eleanor raised me before you took her away. You lived in the same house, but you never knew what I needed.””

Victoria's face tightened.

“You were a difficult child.””

I felt something inside me go still.

“I was a child.””

She looked down.

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then she spoke.

“Your father told me Clara's money would destroy us. He said Daniel would return and take you. He said Eleanor would use you to get everything.””

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to.””

That was the closest thing to honesty she had offered.

“Why?””

Victoria's eyes filled, though I couldn't tell whether it was regret or self-pity.

“Because I had spent my entire marriage trying to become important to Richard. And then you came along. Everything was about you. Your inheritance.

Your future. Your mother. Your grandfather.””

I looked at her.

“So you punished me for being loved.””

She flinched.

“I didn't think of it that way.””

“You didn't think of me at all.””

Victoria looked down.

“I never wanted Jayden involved.””

“But you put his name on the account.””

“I needed your signature.””

“To do what?””

“To transfer the money into a trust I controlled.””

The answer came so easily that I almost missed it.

I stared at her.

“You were going to steal it again.””

She didn't deny it.

I stood.

“Then there's nothing left to discuss.””

As I reached the door, she spoke.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

“Your father left you something.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Not the will. Not the money. A letter.””

“Where?””

Victoria looked directly at me.

“In the house where he died.””

I felt my pulse quicken.

“Why didn't you give it to the investigators?””

“Because I never found it.””

“Then how do you know it exists?””

She leaned forward.

“Because Richard told me he wrote it. He said it was the one thing he couldn't bring himself to destroy.””

I stared at her.

“What did it say?””

Victoria's expression changed.

“He said that if you ever learned the truth, you would understand why he did what he did.””

I shook my head.

“No. I understand why he did it. He was afraid of losing control.””

Victoria looked almost offended.

“You think it's that simple?””

I opened the door.

“It is when you're the one who lost everything.””

Richard's old house had been sold after his death, but the new owner agreed to let investigators search the property.

They found the letter behind a loose panel in his former study.

It was addressed to me.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Marcus,

I don't know if you will ever read this.

I have spent my life telling myself that I was protecting you. The truth is that I was protecting myself.

I knew Eleanor loved you. I knew Daniel wanted to know you. I knew your grandfather had left you an inheritance that would make you independent.

And I was afraid.

I told myself I deserved to control your future because I had raised you. I told myself that taking the money was necessary. I told myself that keeping Eleanor away would make your life easier.

Every lie became another reason to tell the next one.

I stopped reading.

There were tears on the paper.

Richard's handwriting grew uneven toward the bottom.

There is one truth I cannot escape.

Eleanor never abandoned you.

She was the only person who never stopped choosing you.

If you have found her, do not make the mistake I made.

Do not confuse love with ownership.

Your father,

Richard.

I lowered the letter.

For thirty years, I had waited for my father to explain why he had lied.

Now I had the answer.

It wasn't noble.

It wasn't complicated.

It was fear, greed, and control.

And somehow, that made it harder to forgive.

Three weeks later, the court accepted the new evidence.

The fraudulent adoption was formally challenged.

The original trust was frozen pending restitution.

Investigators recovered a substantial portion of the stolen funds and began proceedings to restore the company shares to their rightful owner.

Victoria remained in custody.

Robert Reed and Dr. Ellison agreed to testify.

Daniel's statement was added to the official record.

And Eleanor's name was restored as the person who had fought to protect me.

But the most important moment came on a quiet Saturday afternoon.

Jayden sat beside Eleanor at the kitchen table.

He was drawing another orange tree.

“Grandma,” he said, “can I call you Grandma forever?””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“If you want to, sweetheart.””

He smiled.

“Then I will.””

I watched them from the doorway.

And for the first time in my life, I felt that my family was no longer something I had to search for.

It was sitting right in front of me.

Then Laura called.

“Marcus, the judge has approved the final hearing.””

“When?””

“Monday morning.””

“What happens then?””

She took a breath.

“Your grandfather's will will be formally recognized. The company shares will be transferred to you, and the court will determine the final restitution.””

I looked at Eleanor.

“Is that it?””

“Almost.””

“What do you mean?””

Laura paused.

“There's one remaining condition in your grandfather's will. It requires you to decide what happens to the family company.””

I looked through the window at the street.

“What are my options?””

“You can keep it, sell it, or place it into an independent foundation.””

I thought about my father.

His office.

His contracts.

His lies.

May you like

Then I looked at Jayden's drawing.

“I know what I want to do.””
