Chapter 2: The Name on the Insurance Policy

"Mom?""

Tyler's voice had lost its confidence.

Vanessa didn't look at him. She was watching my father, whose thumb moved slowly across his phone screen.

"Daniel," she began, "this is a misunderstanding.""

Dad let out a short, humorless laugh.

"Then explain it.""

He turned the phone toward her.

The insurance app showed a pending change request submitted at 8:17 that morning. The request would remove me as the designated primary driver of the SUV and add Tyler.

Below the request was a notification stating that the change required the account holder's approval.

Dad hadn't approved it.

I read the screen twice.

"Why would you try to change the insurance before I even graduated?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"Because we were discussing the possibility of Tyler using the vehicle.""

"Who is we?"" Dad asked.

She blinked.

"What?""

"You said we were discussing it. Who, exactly, agreed to this?""

Vanessa glanced at Tyler.

That tiny movement told me more than any answer could have.

Dad saw it, too.

"Tyler, get out.""

Tyler opened the door reluctantly and stepped onto the driveway. He kept the keys in his hand.

Dad held out his palm.

"Keys.""

"Dad, come on.""

"Now.""

Tyler dropped them into Dad's hand with enough force to make the metal jingle.

"This is ridiculous," Tyler muttered.

"I thought you wanted me to have a reliable car.""

"I want you to have a lot of things. That doesn't mean you get to take someone else's.""

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

"Emma is going to Tennessee in August. The SUV will sit here for weeks. Tyler needs to get to work, and public transportation in this town is terrible. We were trying to solve a problem.""

I stared at her.

"Tyler doesn't work.""

"I have an interview next week," Tyler said.

"At the dealership Dad already called for you?"" I asked.

"The one you missed last month?""

"Nobody asked you.""

Dad held up the keys.

"Enough.""

The word cut through the driveway.

He turned to me.

"Emma, did you agree to give Tyler the SUV?""

"No.""

"Did you give Vanessa permission to change the insurance?""

"No.""

"Did I ever tell you the gift was conditional on you staying home?""

I shook my head.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

"There. That's the end of it.""

But she wasn't finished.

"You are humiliating me in front of the children.""

"They're adults," Dad said.

"And you're standing beside a car that you tried to transfer without my permission.""

"I was trying to help my son.""

"And what were you trying to do when you submitted a request to remove Emma from the policy?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears so quickly that I almost missed the transition.

Almost.

"I thought you had already agreed. You said Tyler needed more support. You said we had to stop treating Emma like she was the only child in this family.""

Dad stared at her.

"When did I say that?""

"Last night.""

I remembered last night.

Dad had been in his office, reviewing a stack of paperwork. Vanessa had come downstairs carrying two mugs of tea. She'd stopped in the kitchen to ask me whether I planned to bring the SUV to Nashville.

I'd said yes.

She'd frowned and replied, "We'll see what your father thinks.""

At the time, I'd assumed she was merely being difficult.

Now I wondered what she'd been doing upstairs afterward.

Dad slipped his phone into his pocket.

"Everyone inside.""

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"I'm not having this conversation in front of Emma.""

"Emma is the person whose car you tried to take. She stays.""

For a second, I thought Vanessa might refuse.

Instead, she marched into the house, her heels striking the walkway with sharp, angry clicks.

Tyler followed her.

I stayed beside Dad.

He put one hand on my shoulder.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

My throat tightened.

"You promised me.""

"I know.""

"I told everyone about it. I planned my summer around it. I even started looking at parking permits.""

Dad closed his eyes briefly.

"I know, Emma. I should have checked this before today.""

"How could she even access your insurance account?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he looked at the front door.

"That's what I'm trying to figure out.""

Inside, the kitchen felt colder than the driveway.

Vanessa stood near the island with her arms folded. Tyler had dropped onto a stool, tapping his fingers against the countertop.

Dad placed the keys on the island between us.

"Nobody leaves until we settle this.""

Vanessa gave him an incredulous look.

"You can't be serious.""

"Try me.""

He opened the insurance app again.

"At 8:17 a.m., someone submitted a request to change the SUV's listed driver. At 8:19, someone attempted to update the contact email on the account. At 8:21, the system requested additional verification.""

Vanessa's expression flickered.

I caught it.

So did Dad.

"What contact email?"" I asked.

Dad tapped the screen.

A partially hidden address appeared.

The first few characters were visible.

It began with Tyler's name.

My stepbrother stopped tapping the counter.

Dad looked directly at him.

"Is this your email address?""

Tyler swallowed.

"Maybe. I don't know. Mom handles a lot of this stuff.""

"Does she?""

"I mean, she helps me with paperwork.""

Dad's voice grew quieter.

"Did you ask her to change the insurance?""

Tyler looked at Vanessa.

She gave him a warning stare.

"No," he said.

Dad waited.

Tyler shifted on the stool.

"I just knew I was getting the car.""

"From whom?""

"Mom.""

Dad leaned against the counter.

"Your mother doesn't own this vehicle. I do.""

Tyler's jaw tightened.

"But you said I needed to get my life together.""

"I did. I never said you could take Emma's graduation gift.""

Vanessa stepped between them.

"Daniel, you keep making this sound like a crime. It's a family disagreement.""

"Then why was someone changing my insurance account before anyone spoke to me?""

"Because I was trying to get ahead of the paperwork!""

"The paperwork for a car you don't own?""

She threw her hands up.

"Fine! I made the request. I thought you'd approve it once you saw how unreasonable Emma was being.""

I felt my face grow hot.

"Unreasonable? I didn't even know you'd submitted it.""

"You've always been selfish when it comes to Tyler.""

"Because you keep giving him things that belong to me!""

"Emma," Dad warned gently.

But I couldn't stop.

"When I won the academic award in tenth grade, you told everyone Tyler was having a hard year and asked me not to make a big deal out of it. When I got the scholarship, you spent the entire dinner talking about Tyler's business ideas. And now you're giving him my car.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"You're keeping score.""

"No," I said.

"I'm remembering.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Dad picked up his phone.

"I'm calling the insurance company. Until they confirm this account is secure, nobody touches that SUV.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You're choosing her over your wife?""

"I'm choosing the truth over a story that changes every time I ask a question.""

He walked into his office and shut the door.

Tyler stared at his reflection in the dark kitchen window.

Vanessa turned toward me.

"You should be careful, Emma.""

I met her eyes.

"Is that a threat?""

"It's advice. Your father won't always be around to rescue you.""

I wanted to tell her that I had spent years rescuing myself.

Instead, I picked up my diploma and carried it upstairs.

I heard voices through the floor a few minutes later.

Vanessa's voice first.

Then Tyler's.

Then the heavy thud of Dad's office door opening.

I was putting my diploma into its protective sleeve when my phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent me a message.

*Stop accusing your stepmother. You have no idea what she sacrificed to get Tyler that car.*

I read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask your father what happened to the original title.*

My fingers went cold.

The original title?

Dad had bought the SUV three months earlier. I'd been there when he signed the paperwork. He'd put the folder in his office safe and told me we'd finalize everything after graduation.

I walked downstairs.

Dad stood in the hallway, staring at his phone. Vanessa was nowhere in sight.

"Dad, what happened to the title?""

He looked up sharply.

"Why are you asking about that?""

I showed him the messages.

His face changed as he read them.

Then he took out his phone and called someone.

"Mark, it's Daniel. I need you to check something for me. The original title for the black SUV. Yes, the one we purchased in March.""

He listened.

His jaw tightened.

"You're telling me it was removed from my office safe?""

I stopped breathing.

Dad looked at me.

May you like

Then he asked the question that made the entire house feel suddenly unfamiliar.

"When was the last time you saw Vanessa with a key to my office?""
