Chapter 5: The Woman in the Dealership Photograph
I didn't move until Vanessa stopped speaking.
Her bedroom door remained open by a few inches, and the faint sound of her footsteps crossed the carpet.
I backed down the stairs quietly.
My father had told me not to confront her, and for once, I understood why. We didn't know how much money was missing, where it had gone, or whether Tyler had helped her.
But we did know she was planning to move something that night.
I sent Dad a message.
*I heard Vanessa say she needs to move the rest tonight. Please call me when you can.*
His response came less than a minute later.
*Stay out of her way. I'm on my way to the dealership.*
I sat at the kitchen island and opened the photograph again.
The vehicle brokerage's name was visible above the entrance. I searched it on my phone and found a small company specializing in used luxury vehicles.
Its website showed black SUVs, silver sports cars, and glossy sedans photographed against white walls.
Nothing about it looked particularly suspicious.
But the photograph had been taken on the previous afternoon, and Vanessa had stood beside my SUV as though she were discussing something she expected to own.
I enlarged the image.
The man in the gray suit had a distinctive silver watch and a small scar near his left eyebrow.
I saved the photograph.
Then I heard Vanessa's heels on the stairs.
She entered the kitchen carrying a glass of water.
Her eyes moved toward my phone.
"What are you looking at?""
"Nothing.""
She smiled without warmth.
"You've become very secretive today.""
I locked my screen.
"I learned from the best.""
Her expression tightened.
She set the glass down.
"Your father has always encouraged this behavior. He lets you question adults, challenge decisions, and act as though being intelligent makes you more important than everyone else.""
"I don't think I'm more important than everyone else.""
"Really? Then why can't you let Tyler have one thing?""
I stared at her.
"Because it's mine.""
"Your father hasn't transferred the title.""
"He promised me the SUV.""
"And promises can change.""
"Not when someone secretly changes the paperwork behind his back.""
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the glass.
For a moment, I thought she might throw it.
Instead, she took a long drink.
"You have no idea what this family has been dealing with.""
"Then explain it.""
She laughed softly.
"You wouldn't understand.""
"Try me.""
Her eyes hardened.
"Your father has been under enormous pressure. The business has been struggling, expenses have been rising, and Tyler has been trying to recover from some difficult decisions. I was attempting to help everyone.""
"By transferring Dad's money to a debt settlement company?""
She went completely still.
I had my answer.
"How do you know about that?"" she whispered.
"Because Dad showed me the transaction.""
She placed the glass on the counter with a sharp click.
"Your father shouldn't have involved you.""
"Then maybe you shouldn't have involved my name in a fraudulent title request.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Listen carefully, Emma. You are about to leave for college. You have a scholarship, a future, and every opportunity a young woman could want.
Tyler is struggling. If you cared about this family, you'd stop trying to destroy him over a vehicle.""
I stood.
"I didn't destroy anything. I studied. I worked.
I earned my scholarship. Dad bought that SUV because he wanted to reward me.""
"And now you want to take it away from Tyler.""
"No. I want you to stop giving him things that aren't yours.""
Her face flushed.
"You ungrateful little—"
She stopped herself.
I waited.
For once, I wanted to hear the rest.
Instead, she picked up her glass and walked away.
At the bottom of the staircase, she turned.
"Your father may believe you now. But when he learns the entire story, don't expect him to look at you the same way.""
Then she disappeared upstairs.
I remained in the kitchen until my phone rang.
Dad.
"Emma, I'm at the dealership. The manager confirmed Vanessa met with a broker yesterday.""
My heart pounded.
"What did she tell him?""
"She claimed I had authorized a sale because the vehicle was no longer needed.""
"Did the broker agree?""
"He apparently offered a preliminary valuation. No sale was completed, but Vanessa asked about the fastest way to transfer ownership.""
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
"Did you find out who the man was?""
"The dealership manager recognized him. His name is Richard Cole. He runs the brokerage.""
I searched the name.
Several results appeared, including a professional profile and a business listing.
Dad continued.
"Richard says Vanessa told him the SUV belonged to her household and that the owner was traveling. He didn't know the title was being disputed.""
"Does he have records?""
"He's sending me copies of their correspondence.""
I glanced toward the staircase.
"Dad, she said she needs to move the rest tonight.""
There was a pause.
"What exactly did she say?""
I repeated the words.
His breathing changed.
"Emma, lock your bedroom door tonight. I'm coming home.""
"Dad, what about the money?""
"I'm checking the bank records. Don't touch anything in my office.""
The call ended.
I went upstairs and locked my bedroom door.
For the next hour, the house was unnaturally quiet.
Then, around seven, I heard Vanessa speaking downstairs.
Her voice was low and hurried.
I opened my door a fraction.
"I told you, the account is frozen," she said.
"No, I can't access it. Daniel changed the passwords.""
A pause.
"Then use the other one.""
Another pause.
"Because it's in her name, that's why.""
My heart seemed to stop.
Her name?
Mine?
I leaned closer to the door.
"I don't care what you promised them. You said the paperwork was clean.""
A floorboard creaked beneath my foot.
Vanessa stopped talking.
I stepped back.
Seconds later, her footsteps approached the stairs.
I shut my door and pretended to be searching through my suitcase when she knocked.
"Emma?""
I didn't answer immediately.
"What?""
"Open the door.""
I unlocked it but kept one hand on the handle.
She stood in the hallway holding a manila envelope.
"I need you to sign something.""
I looked at the envelope.
"What is it?""
"Some college paperwork. Your father asked me to organize the family documents before you leave.""
I stared at her.
"Dad asked you to do that?""
"Yes.""
"Then he can give it to me himself.""
Her smile vanished.
"Don't be difficult.""
She pushed the envelope toward me.
I didn't take it.
"What's inside?""
"Documents.""
"Which documents?""
Vanessa exhaled sharply.
"You're making a simple task impossible.""
I looked at the envelope again.
My name was written across the front in blue ink.
Beneath it, someone had added a date of birth.
Mine.
"Why is my birthday on there?""
Vanessa pulled the envelope back.
"Because it's your paperwork.""
"Show me.""
She stepped away from the door.
"Forget it.""
Then she turned and walked toward her bedroom.
I watched her go, my pulse hammering.
A few minutes later, Dad returned home.
I met him at the front door and told him everything.
He listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he looked toward the staircase.
"She asked you to sign something?""
"Yes.""
"Did you see what it was?""
"No.""
He nodded.
"Good. Don't sign anything she gives you.""
He went straight to his office.
I followed him inside.
On his desk lay a new stack of bank statements. He opened a spreadsheet on his computer and turned the screen toward me.
"There are two accounts involved," he said.
"The household account and a separate account connected to your college expenses.""
I stared at him.
"My college expenses?""
"I opened it when you were accepted to Vanderbilt. I wanted to make sure you had money for books, travel, supplies, and emergencies. The account is in your name, with me as the custodian.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"How much was in it?""
"Twenty-four thousand dollars.""
I looked at the screen.
The balance was now just over six thousand.
"No.""
Dad turned toward me.
"I've already called the bank. Several transfers were made over the past month.""
"Who could access it?""
"Someone had the account credentials. I'm trying to establish how.""
I thought of Vanessa's envelope.
The birthday written across it.
The strange phone conversation.
"Could she have opened an account using my information?""
Dad's expression darkened.
"It's possible. The bank is investigating.""
I sank into the chair.
"That's my college money.""
"I know.""
"That's the money you saved for me.""
"I know, sweetheart.""
My eyes burned.
I'd spent years working for scholarships because I never wanted my education to become a burden. Dad had quietly built a safety net so I could start college without worrying about every unexpected expense.
And someone had been pulling pieces of it away while smiling at my graduation photographs.
Dad closed the spreadsheet.
"We're going to recover what we can. But I need you to think carefully. Has Vanessa ever asked you for your Social Security number, bank details, or copies of your identification?""
I searched my memory.
Then I remembered a conversation from two months earlier.
Vanessa had stood in the kitchen holding a stack of forms.
She'd said she was updating the family's emergency contact information and needed my identification for the records.
I'd handed her a photocopy of my driver's license.
At the time, it had seemed harmless.
Now, my stomach turned.
"She asked for my ID in April.""
Dad's face became unreadable.
"Do you remember what she did with it?""
"No.""
He reached for his phone.
Before he could make another call, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Then Vanessa screamed.
"Daniel! You need to come here!""
Dad ran out of the office.
I followed him.
Vanessa stood beside the open bedroom closet, pointing toward the floor.
A small black lockbox lay overturned near her suitcase.
Its contents were scattered across the carpet.
Bank envelopes.
Printed account statements.
And several pieces of identification.
Dad bent down to pick up the nearest document.
Then he stopped.
It was a photocopy of my driver's license.
Stapled to it was an application for a new bank account.

The account holder's name was mine.
But the signature at the bottom was Vanessa's.
