Chapter 2: The Badge And The Truth

The silence after Naomi’s words felt heavier than the lake itself.

“My dad is the county sheriff.””

Nobody moved.

Not Brooke.

Not Kayla.

Not Madison.

Even the wind seemed to disappear for a moment.

Sheriff Daniel Carter stood beside his daughter, his eyes moving slowly from the damaged chair to the phone in Kayla’s hand.

He didn’t raise his voice.

That was the part that made everyone uncomfortable.

People in town knew Sheriff Carter.

They knew he was calm during emergencies.

They knew he could walk into a room full of angry people and make them lower their voices without saying much.

He didn’t need to threaten anyone.

His presence was enough.

“Naomi,” he said quietly, “are you hurt?””

Naomi looked away.

“No.””

Her father studied her face.

He knew her too well.

He noticed the small things.

The way she avoided eye contact.

The way her hands tightened around the fish container.

The way she said “no” too quickly.

“Naomi.””

She swallowed.

“I’m okay.””

Sheriff Carter stepped closer.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, she did.

For a second, she wasn’t the quiet girl who ignored insults.

She was his daughter.

The girl who used to cry when she accidentally stepped on ants.

The girl who rescued baby birds from sidewalks and begged him to build tiny shelters in the backyard.

The girl who had always cared more about protecting things than protecting herself.

His expression softened.

“Tell me what happened.””

Before Naomi could answer, Brooke stepped forward.

“Sheriff Carter, this is being misunderstood.””

Naomi turned.

Of course.

Brooke.

Always the first person to rewrite the story.

Her father looked at Brooke.

“Your name?””

“Brooke Miller.””

“I know who you are.””

That made Brooke pause.

Everyone in the county knew Sheriff Carter knew everyone.

Not because he was searching for problems.

Because he paid attention.

Brooke forced a small smile.

“Good. Then you know I would never do anything dangerous.””

Daniel looked at the phone in Kayla’s hand.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Brooke’s face changed.

“What?””

“Dangerous.””

He pointed toward the device.

“Why don’t we start with the video?””

Kayla immediately lowered the phone.

“I wasn’t doing anything.””

Daniel held out his hand.

“Give it to me.””

Kayla looked at Brooke.

That was the first crack in their confidence.

They had laughed because they believed they were untouchable.

But now they were realizing something.

A joke could become evidence.

A prank could become a problem.

Kayla slowly handed over the phone.

Sheriff Carter didn’t watch it immediately.

Instead, he looked at Naomi.

“Did you give them permission to record you?””

Naomi shook her head.

“No.””

“Did you ask them to post it?””

“No.””

“Did you know they were recording?””

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

Then he looked at the screen.

The video began.

The sound came first.

Brooke’s laughter.

Then the movement of the chair.

Then Naomi’s voice.

“Stop.””

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The video continued.

Nobody spoke while it played.

When it ended, the only sound was the water moving against the shore.

Sheriff Carter handed the phone back.

His expression was unreadable.

Brooke crossed her arms.

“Okay, maybe it looked bad.””

Naomi stared at her.

“Looked bad?””

Brooke sighed.

“You weren’t hurt.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Is that what makes something wrong?””

Brooke opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

He continued.

“Because if someone pushes another person into a lake, your argument is that the person didn’t break a bone?””

Brooke looked uncomfortable.

“It was just a joke.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“A joke is something everyone laughs at.””

He glanced at Naomi.

“Not something one person uses to embarrass someone else.””

For the first time, Brooke didn’t have a response.

Naomi looked down at the fish container.

Her father noticed.

“You said something about an injured fish.””

She nodded.

“I found it this morning.””

She carefully lifted the container.

“It had a damaged fin. I was going to bring it to the wildlife center after school.””

Daniel crouched beside her.

“You carried it all the way here?””

Naomi nodded.

“I didn’t want it to die.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“That sounds like you.””

Brooke rolled her eyes.

“You’re seriously making this about a fish?””

Daniel stood.

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“I’m making this about choices.””

He looked at the three girls.

“You chose to push someone.””

He looked at Kayla.

“You chose to record it.””

Then Madison.

“You chose to laugh.””

Each word landed harder than the last.

Madison’s face turned pale.

“We didn’t think it was a big deal.””

Daniel nodded.

“That’s usually what people say after they realize it was.””

Brooke’s confidence returned slightly.

“My parents will hear about this.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Good.””

She blinked.

“What?””

“I think your parents should hear about it.””

That was not the reaction she expected.

Most adults backed down when they heard the Miller name.

But Sheriff Carter didn’t.

Brooke’s jaw tightened.

“You’re threatening me?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m doing my job.””

He pulled out his phone.

“I’m contacting your parents and filing a report.””

The word report changed everything.

Kayla immediately stepped forward.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked nervous.

“We can fix this.””

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“How?””

Kayla looked at Naomi.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology sounded forced.

Naomi noticed.

So did her father.

Daniel didn’t respond.

Kayla continued.

“We didn’t mean for her to fall.””

Naomi looked at her.

“But you pushed the chair.””

Kayla looked away.

Brooke stepped in.

“Naomi, don’t act like you’re perfect.””

The sentence was so unexpected that even Madison looked at her.

Naomi frowned.

“What?””

Brooke’s eyes narrowed.

“You always act like you’re better than everyone.””

“I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

Brooke pointed toward the lake.

“You sit here alone. You don’t come to parties. You don’t care about what anyone thinks. You walk around like you’re above all of us.””

Naomi stared at her.

For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.

Because that was the first honest thing Brooke had said all day.

Not kind.

Not fair.

But honest.

Naomi slowly placed the fish container down.

“I don’t think I’m better than you.””

Brooke looked surprised.

“Then why do you act like it?””

Naomi looked at the water.

“Because I got tired of trying to impress people who only liked me when I was quiet.””

The words surprised everyone.

Even Daniel.

Naomi rarely talked about what happened before.

Before she became the girl who spent lunches reading in the library.

Before she stopped going to school events.

Before she learned that being alone hurt less than being rejected.

Brooke looked away first.

But only for a second.

Then she grabbed her phone.

“This isn’t over.””

Daniel watched her.

“What does that mean?””

Brooke smiled.

A cold, confident smile.

“It means everyone is going to see this.””

Naomi’s expression changed.

“See what?””

Brooke turned her phone around.

The screen showed a social media page.

A video was already uploaded.

The title was simple.

*Sheriff’s Daughter Freaks Out After Falling Into The Lake.*

Naomi felt her stomach drop.

“You posted it?””

Brooke shrugged.

“People love funny videos.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Delete it.””

Brooke shook her head.

“No.””

The sheriff’s eyes hardened.

“Brooke.””

She smiled.

“You can’t arrest me for posting a video.””

She looked directly at Naomi.

“You might be the sheriff’s daughter.””

A pause.

“But that doesn’t mean everyone is going to take your side.””

She turned and walked away.

Kayla and Madison followed.

Naomi watched them disappear down the dirt path.

The lake was quiet again.

But this time, it didn’t feel peaceful.

Her phone buzzed.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

She looked down.

Hundreds of notifications were appearing.

Comments.

Messages.

People from school.

People she barely knew.

And then one message appeared at the top.

From an unknown account.

Naomi opened it.

Her face slowly changed.

May you like

Because underneath the cruel comments and laughing emojis was a message that said:

*“You think Brooke exposed you? She doesn’t even know what she recorded.””*
