Chapter 9: The Man Behind The Badge

For a few seconds, nobody understood what was happening.

Thomas Reed stood beside Naomi.

The vehicle near the trees belonged to Thomas.

But Thomas was standing right there.

The rain fell harder.

The field lights flickered above them.

Naomi looked from the parked truck to the man beside her.

Her mind struggled to connect the pieces.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on the vehicle.

“Thomas.””

The older man slowly turned.

His face had changed.

The fear was gone.

Replaced by exhaustion.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for far too long.

“Daniel.””

The sheriff’s hand moved closer to his radio.

“Step away from Naomi.””

Thomas looked hurt.

“After all these years, you still think it was me?””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“I don’t know what to think anymore.””

That sentence seemed to break something between them.

Because they weren’t just coworkers.

They weren’t just two officers standing in a field.

They were friends.

For fifteen years, Thomas had been the person Daniel trusted most.

The man who had stood beside him during storms.

The man who had helped him raise Naomi after Emily died.

The man Naomi had once called Uncle Thomas.

And now everyone was looking at him like he was a stranger.

Naomi stepped between them.

“Stop.””

Both men looked at her.

She looked at Thomas.

“Tell me the truth.””

Thomas swallowed.

“I have been.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You’ve been giving me pieces.””

Thomas looked away.

“You deserve the whole story.””

“Then tell me.””

The field became silent.

Even Daniel didn’t interrupt.

Thomas took a slow breath.

“Your mother found evidence that Victor Hale was using county resources to manipulate land deals.””

Naomi nodded.

“I know.””

“She also found out someone inside law enforcement was helping him.””

Naomi looked at Daniel.

“Who?””

Thomas’s eyes lowered.

“That person was me.””

The words landed like a punch.

Naomi stared.

“No.””

Thomas didn’t defend himself.

He just stood there.

“You.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not surprise.

Pain.

“Thomas…”

Thomas looked at him.

“I know.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“Every day?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Naomi stepped back.

She felt sick.

The man who had brought her birthday gifts.

The man who had sat beside her at her mother’s funeral.

The man who had told her everything would be okay.

Had been part of the reason it wasn’t.

“Why?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

Naomi laughed quietly.

“Everyone says that.””

“I was afraid of what would happen if I refused.””

“To who?””

Thomas looked toward the road.

“To my family.””

Naomi frowned.

“What?””

“Victor Hale threatened my wife. My children.””

His voice cracked.

“He knew where they lived. He knew their schedules. He made sure I understood what would happen if I didn’t cooperate.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because he told me you were next.””

The answer silenced Daniel.

Thomas continued.

“I thought I could control it.””

Naomi shook her head.

“But Mom found out.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Thomas looked at the ground.

“She asked me for help.””

Naomi’s breath caught.

“You helped her?””

“Yes.””

“After working for him?””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked at her.

“That was the biggest mistake of my life.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened that night?””

Thomas’s face changed.

The question he had avoided for years.

“The night Emily died.””

Thomas looked at Naomi.

“She wasn’t supposed to die.””

Naomi felt tears forming.

“Then why did she?””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“Because someone else knew she had the evidence.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Who?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then:

“Rachel wasn’t the only person Emily contacted.””

Naomi looked at Rachel.

Rachel’s expression changed.

“You told me nobody else knew.””

Thomas nodded.

“I lied.””

“Who else?””

Thomas looked toward the dark road.

“Brooke.””

Naomi froze.

“What?””

“Brooke Miller.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why would Brooke know?””

Thomas looked at Naomi.

“Because she wasn’t just Victor Hale’s connection.””

Naomi’s confusion grew.

“She was a child.””

“She was.””

Thomas nodded.

“But children notice things adults think they don’t.””

Rachel looked down.

“My daughter was around those meetings.””

Naomi looked at her.

“You knew?””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“I knew Brooke had seen things.””

“Then why did you let her grow up with him?””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“Because I was trying to get her away.””

“But you disappeared.””

“I disappeared because Victor made sure I couldn’t take her with me.””

Naomi looked between them.

The story was becoming larger.

More painful.

More complicated.

Then her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A new message.

This time from the unknown account.

A video.

Naomi pressed play.

The screen showed an old security recording.

A parking lot.

The date was fifteen years earlier.

The night Emily died.

A car pulled in.

A woman stepped out.

Emily.

Naomi stopped breathing.

Her mother walked toward a man waiting beside another vehicle.

The image was blurry.

But the man’s face was visible.

Daniel recognized him first.

His expression changed.

“No.””

Naomi looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Thomas did.

“Victor Hale.””

The video continued.

Emily handed him a folder.

They argued.

Then another person entered the frame.

A younger girl.

Naomi leaned closer.

She recognized her immediately.

Brooke.

But something was wrong.

Brooke wasn’t just watching.

She was holding something.

A recording device.

The video skipped.

Then Emily turned.

She looked directly toward the camera.

Like she knew someone was watching.

Then the recording ended.

A final message appeared.

*“Ask Brooke why she lied about being a victim.””*

Naomi looked up.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said:

“We need to find Brooke.””

They found her at the old Miller property.

The house sat empty most of the year.

Rachel had not returned there since she left.

But Naomi knew Brooke would.

Because people always returned to places connected to their secrets.

The front door was unlocked.

Daniel entered first.

Naomi followed.

Thomas stayed behind them.

The house was dark.

Dust covered the furniture.

Photographs lined the walls.

A perfect family image.

A perfect lie.

“Brooke?””

No answer.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

They rushed up.

At the end of the hallway, Brooke stood beside an open room.

Her face was pale.

She wasn’t smiling.

For the first time, Naomi saw her without confidence.

Without the mask.

“You know.””

Naomi stopped.

“What?””

Brooke looked at the video on Naomi’s phone.

“You saw it.””

Naomi stared.

“You were there.””

Brooke looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Brooke laughed bitterly.

“You think anyone would believe me?””

Naomi frowned.

“You were a witness.””

“No.””

Brooke shook her head.

“I was a child.””

She looked at Rachel.

“I was his daughter.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Brooke.””

“No.””

Brooke’s eyes filled with anger.

“You left me with him.””

Rachel looked devastated.

“I tried—”

“You disappeared.””

Silence.

Naomi watched.

The girl who had pushed her into the lake was suddenly just a daughter who had been abandoned.

But Naomi still needed answers.

“Why did you target me?””

Brooke looked at her.

“Because I thought you knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That your father had the evidence.””

Naomi froze.

“My father?””

Brooke nodded.

“Your mother gave it to him.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Brooke looked at him.

“You don’t remember, do you?””

Daniel went still.

“What?””

Brooke’s voice dropped.

“After Emily died, you found the file.””

The room became silent.

Naomi turned slowly toward her father.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked confused.

“I don’t remember.””

Brooke laughed softly.

“That’s because you were drugged.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Brooke looked at Thomas.

“Tell her.””

Thomas looked away.

Naomi’s heart raced.

“Tell me what?””

Thomas whispered:

“The night Emily died…”

A pause.

“Someone erased your father’s memory of what happened.””

Naomi stared.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at the open doorway behind Brooke.

A shadow appeared.

Someone else had entered the house.

A familiar voice spoke from the darkness.

“Me.””

Everyone turned.

Victor Hale stepped into the hallway.

Older now.

But still wearing the same confident smile.

The man who had hidden for fifteen years.

The man who had controlled everyone’s lives.

He looked directly at Naomi.

“Your mother was right about one thing.””

Naomi felt frozen.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“She trusted the wrong people.””

May you like

Then he looked at Daniel.

“And so did you.””
