Chapter 13: The Nurse Who Disappeared
The name Laura Whitmore stayed on the screen long after Rebecca closed the medical records.
Vanessa's sister.
The woman who had supposedly moved overseas before my mother died.
The woman whose login had been used to authorize a medication order on the night Mom's condition suddenly deteriorated.
Dad stared at the computer.
"Where is she now?""
Rebecca picked up her phone.
"I'll find out.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Laura worked at St. Mary's Hospital. She was a registered nurse. I remember Eleanor mentioning her once.""
Dad turned toward him.
"Did you know she was treating Eleanor?""
"No. I thought she had left the hospital years before.""
Rebecca began making calls.
Within twenty minutes, she had confirmed something important.
Laura had resigned from St. Mary's two months after my mother's death.
Her resignation letter cited personal reasons.
There was no forwarding address.
However, her nursing registration remained active, and her most recent professional contact information was linked to a rehabilitation center outside Columbus.
Rebecca wrote down the address.
"She's there.""
Dad stood immediately.
"Let's go.""
"Daniel, we shouldn't confront her without arranging an interview.""
"I'm not going to threaten her. I want answers.""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Maya, you need to stay here.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Dad turned.
"Sweetheart—"
"Mom wrote that letter for me. She wanted someone to find out what happened.""
He looked at my face.
I continued.
"I don't want another adult telling me to wait upstairs.""
Dad was silent.
Finally, he nodded.
"All right. But you'll stay beside me and Rebecca.""
We left that afternoon.
The rehabilitation center was a low brick building surrounded by bare trees.
Inside, the receptionist checked Rebecca's identification and made a phone call.
A few minutes later, a woman in a blue cardigan appeared.
She was in her early forties, with dark hair pulled into a loose bun.
When she saw Dad, she stopped.
"Daniel Carter?""
He nodded.
"Laura Whitmore?""
She glanced at Rebecca.
"What's this about?""
Rebecca introduced herself.
"We're reviewing medical and financial records connected to Eleanor Carter's treatment five years ago.""
Laura's expression changed.
"I don't know anything about that.""
Dad stepped forward.
"Your login was used to authorize a medication order on October 13.""
Laura went pale.
"That's impossible.""
"We have the audit trail.""
She looked toward the receptionist.
Then back at us.
"I can't discuss patient information.""
Rebecca spoke calmly.
"We're not asking you to violate privacy regulations. We are asking whether someone used your credentials without your permission.""
Laura swallowed.
"Can we speak privately?""
She led us into a small meeting room.
Once the door closed, she sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
"I knew this would happen eventually," she whispered.
Dad leaned forward.
"What happened to my wife?""
Laura looked at him.
"I didn't hurt Eleanor.""
"Then tell us what you know.""
She took a breath.
"Vanessa was my sister. She called me shortly before Eleanor was admitted. She said she needed help with some paperwork.""
"What paperwork?"" Rebecca asked.
"Financial authorization documents. She said Eleanor had agreed to let her manage a business investment.""
Dad shook his head.
"She had no such agreement.""
Laura looked down.
"I know that now.""
"Did you know it then?""
"I wasn't sure.""
Dad's voice became harder.
"Did you use your hospital login to change my wife's medication?""
Laura began crying.
"No. I didn't administer anything. But I allowed Vanessa to use my credentials.""
The room went silent.
Rebecca opened her notebook.
"Why?""
Laura wiped her face.
"She told me Dr. Hayes had approved a medication adjustment. She said he was too busy to enter the order himself.""
"Did you verify that?""
Laura shook her head.
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because I trusted him. He was the attending physician.""
Dad gripped the edge of the table.
"Was the order medically necessary?""
Laura hesitated.
"I don't know. I wasn't the prescribing physician.""
"Did you see the medication?""
"Yes.""
"Which one?""
She gave Rebecca the name.
Rebecca wrote it down and immediately requested the hospital's independent clinical review.
Then Laura said something else.
"There's something I haven't told anyone.""
Dad looked at her.
"What?""
"The medication order wasn't the only thing Vanessa asked me to do.""
Laura opened her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.
It was a photocopy of a hospital visitor authorization.
The date was October 14.
My mother's final day.
At the bottom was Vanessa's signature.
Above it was a handwritten note.
*Financial representative permitted to discuss estate arrangements with patient.*
Dad stared at the page.
"She brought financial documents into my wife's hospital room?""
Laura nodded.
"Yes.""
"While she was unconscious?""
Laura began crying harder.
"Yes.""
Dad stood.
"Did you see her?""
"I was working that shift.""
"What did she do?""
Laura closed her eyes.
"She placed papers on the bedside table. Dr. Hayes was there. Graham Pierce was there, too.""
Rebecca looked up sharply.
"Graham was inside the hospital?""
"Yes.""
"Did Eleanor sign anything?""
Laura shook her head.
"No. She couldn't even hold a pen.""
Dad looked as though he might collapse.
"Then what happened?""
Laura's voice became barely audible.
"Vanessa asked Dr. Hayes whether they could use the signature from an old document.""
I felt my stomach turn.
Dad stared at her.
"Did he agree?""
Laura nodded.
"Yes.""
Rebecca closed her notebook.
"Do you have any evidence?""
Laura opened her phone.
"I kept messages.""
She scrolled through an old conversation.
One message from Vanessa read:
Use the old authorization. Daniel must never see the new one.
Another message, sent minutes later, said:
If Eleanor wakes up, tell her everything has already been handled.
Dad looked away.
Laura continued.
"I saved these because I was afraid. After Eleanor died, Vanessa told me to delete them. I didn't.""
"Why didn't you report this?"" Dad asked.
Laura's eyes filled.
"Because I was ashamed. I had already let her use my credentials. I knew I could lose my nursing license.""
Rebecca looked at her carefully.
"You understand that preserving these messages and cooperating with the investigation may be important.""
Laura nodded.
"I'll tell them everything.""
Before we left, she handed Rebecca her phone and agreed to provide a formal statement.
Outside, Dad stood beside the car for several minutes.
Then he looked at me.
"Your mother was trying to stop them.""
I nodded.
"And nobody listened.""
He pulled me into a hug.
For the first time, I felt that he understood how much those five years had cost us.
But when Rebecca returned from speaking with Laura, she was holding her phone.
"Daniel, we have a problem.""
He turned.
"What now?""
"Vanessa has contacted Graham.""
"How do you know?""
"Laura just received a message from her sister.""
Rebecca showed us the screen.
Vanessa had written:
If Daniel finds Laura, make sure she understands what happens if she talks.
Dad immediately called the authorities.
Then Rebecca received another notification.
It was from the bank.
The attempted transfer of Maya's trust had been blocked.
But someone had just tried to withdraw money from Vanessa's business account.
The recipient was a law firm.
And the transfer description contained four words:
*Emergency legal defense retainer.*
Dad stared at the screen.
"She's preparing to fight.""
Rebecca nodded.
"Then we need to be ready.""
But none of us knew where Vanessa was.
Until Brielle called.
Her voice was shaking.
"Daniel? Mom just came home.""
Dad put the phone on speaker.
"Where is she?""
"In her bedroom.""
"Is she alone?""
Brielle hesitated.
"No.""
"Who is with her?""
A pause.
May you like
Then Brielle whispered:
"Dr. Hayes.""
